AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM Holds Largest Residency Fair Ever

The New York College of Podiatric Medicine of Touro University (NYCPM) held its largest residency fair ever last week with 67 programs participating from 14 states including NY, CT, IN, PA, VA, DC, MA, NJ, OH, TX, RI, AB, FL, and MI. The annual event is scheduled each summer to familiarize NYCPM students with various residency opportunities available when they graduate.

NYCPM Holds Largest Residency Fair Ever

According to Ronald Soave, DPM, Dean of Clinical Education, "The Residency Fair held at the school really helps our students compare, contrast, and evaluate numerous residency programs to see which ones appeal to them and what they are looking for in terms of clinical opportunities and locations. "While the Fair is targeted toward 4th year students, students in other classes are also welcome to attend to start thinking about their residency opportunities, even though they are two or three years out.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
MI Podiatrist Discusses Why Hammertoes Develop

According to Conway McLean, DPM, "It’s a surprisingly complex answer as to why hammertoes develop. Joints are mobile, and thus they are able to take many positions. Because the joints at the ball of the foot are minimally constrained, able to move in various directions, any change in the structures pulling on the toe will lead to an imbalance. Voilà, the toe will be pulled out of position. Probably the most common reason for the development of hammertoes is the frequently seen pronation syndrome, the most common biomechanical pathology on the planet."

Dr. Conway McLean

"Early on, the bending of the toe will occur only when a person is walking. But due to the repetitive nature of gait, the changed position of the toe becomes more fixed. Initially, the soft tissues around the joint become adapted to the contracted position, making the deformity flexible. With time, the bones are altered as well, rendering the joint fixed. The toe can no longer be straightened, even manually."

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
NY Podiatrist Provides Tips on Buying Summer Walking Shoes

Finding the perfect pair of walking shoes for summer isn't just about style. It's about comfort, support, and versatility, especially when temperatures rise and plans include everything from weekend hikes to beach walks. According to Bruce Pinker, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon, you'll also want to look for walking shoes that offer durability and support. Lightweight, breathable materials that reduce moisture are also key for sweaty summer weather.

Dr. Bruce Pinker

Dr. Pinker also recommends trying on footwear in the afternoon — because feet tend to swell throughout the day. This way, you can find a shoe that fits your feet at their largest, to avoid any cramping. When it comes to summer walking shoes, Pinker says it's most important to find a pair of shoes that have an outsole with adequate traction and grip, a cushioned insole with added arch support, and adequate breathability.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Study Validates SmartBoot Remote Monitoring System for DFUs

A newly published study in Sensors introduces the first validated real-time remote monitoring system for patient adherence and mobility in diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) management. The system, called SmartBoot, leverages wearable edge computing and a cloud-connected platform to track step count, cadence, and boot adherence with unprecedented accuracy—marking a significant milestone in diabetic limb preservation.

The collaborative study was led by researchers from the University of Southern California, Baylor College of Medicine, and the University of California, Los Angeles, and was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the PhRMA Foundation. It is part of the ongoing SmartBoot clinical trial.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Ways AI is Reshaping Private Practice

From ambient transcription to smart scheduling, AI is helping doctors cut costs, save time and improve care. Here’s where it’s making the biggest difference — and what to consider before you invest.

2. Improving patient experience

AI scheduling assistants can analyze patient behavior to recommend ideal appointment slots, reducing cancellations and improving access.

Smart messaging systems automate reminders, send intake forms, and respond to FAQs, creating a smoother experience for patients and staff alike. Practices report fewer no-shows and higher patient satisfaction when these tools are in use.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
7 Essential Investing Rules We All Should Know

Here are seven essential rules every investor should know. They may not turn you into a billionaire, but they just might help you build the future you want.

2. Keep Buying

Most people invest through workplace plans like a 401(k), contributing automatically every paycheck. That's not just convenient; it's a strategy known as dollar-cost averaging, where you invest consistent amounts over time, regardless of what the market is doing.

While research shows lump-sum investing generally outperforms over the long run, dollar-cost averaging can help smooth out the ride, especially during downturns, when your money buys more shares at lower prices.

CODING & BILLING Q&As FROM THE DOCTORLINE.COM
Query: Third-Party Deadlines

How long does an insurance company have to process and pay a claim? We have had several instances here in NY where insurance companies don't acknowledge receipts of claims processing nor pay the claims for months. What can I do to force them to process/pay these claims?

NY Podiatrist

Response from thedoctorline.com: In NYS, generally speaking, an insurance company has 30 days to process a claim. However, that does not mean actually pay the claim. There are a myriad of reasons why a claim may require further processing prior to it being paid. If you have not received any correspondence from the carrier 30 days after submission of the claim, they may be in violation of NYS regulations.

If continued correspondence from the insurer fails in securing any acknowledgment from the carrier that they have received the claim, you might want to contact the NYS Attorney General's...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT ENROLLMENT)
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

I keep obsessing about the enrollment problem at the podiatry schools being a recognition problem and how the Foundation for Podiatric Education (FPE) and Feet on the Street will directly address these perceived causes of low enrollment. I wonder if we’re not jumping on the first possible cause and missing some deeper issues. Let me use a clinical example as, I think, a useful analogy.

Suppose a young family practice physician is moonlighting on weekends doing telemedicine. On Saturday morning, a patient tells the young doc that he has been working out a lot lately and has two problems. He thinks he strained some abdominal muscles doing core exercises and he has developed a fever and feels somewhat nauseated. The doctor asks some rudimentary questions then decides to simply tell the patient to take acetaminophen and he will prescribe a couple days of hydrocodone and cyclobenzaprine for the muscle spasm. The doctor does not hear from the patient so he tries to phone the patient Sunday night only to find out the patient’s appendix burst,...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Bruce Lebowitz, DPM

I began investing in the late 1990s using a broker. During the great recession, I realized he was not watching my back and I lost a good deal of money from his advice/planning. Once I retired in 2014, I thought I should use a professional planner as I needed to create a cash flow to replace my salary. He got me into a coal company bond right after President Obama promised to bankrupt that industry. He didn’t have my back.

Eventually I realized that no one cared about my money as much as I did. I learned how to invest for income and have been doing it myself since.
