PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2 |
ME Podiatrist Leads Hospital Health Talk
Jared Kohlbacher, DPM recently kicked off a series of health talks at Northern Light AR Gould Hospital in Presque Isle, Maine. Dr. Kohlbacher is a surgical podiatrist at the hospital. “The summer months usually mean a lot more physical activity, which can be hard on your feet, especially if you already have underlying foot or ankle issues,” explained Kohlbacher.
|
Dr. Jared Kohlbacher |
This was a perfect way to kick off what is intended to be four to six talks a year, according to Laura Turner, director of community outreach, since Dr. Kohlbacher is on the provider team that originated the idea and because of the topic itself.

Generalists' Income Increasing Faster Than Specialists': Survey
An annual survey found that in 2018, primary care physicians (PCPs) earned $266,500 a year, a 3.4% increase from the previous year, Forbes reports. The last 5 years’ 10.46% rise in PCP median pay has outpaced that of specialists at 7.78%. The increase bodes well for value-based compensation.
Most major insurers and Medicare are using value-based pay models, paying at least half their in-network physicians based on how well they keep patients healthy and out of the hospital.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Questions to Ask about wRVU Compensation - Part 4
Physicians employed by a medical group, hospital, or academic institution are commonly compensated using a productivity formula based on work relative value units (wRVUs). Since wRVUs drive your paycheck, it’s to your advantage to ask questions in order to understand how the system works — and specifically how your employer counts wRVUs.
4. What credit do I receive if I bill a code for an unlisted procedure? CPT codes for unlisted procedures, such as CPT 64999 (unlisted procedure, nervous system), are not assigned a wRVU by CMS. If you use any of the unlisted codes, have a discussion with your administrator about a suitable value for the service. Suggest a similar procedure to use as a reference and discuss an appropriate adjustment to the wRVU to reflect the work required for the unlisted procedure.
