CT Podiatrist Discusses Heel Pain
Two common foot issues that runners experience include heel pain/plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. Even though these conditions are all treatable, runners should not ignore any serious pain issues they experience when running or after they cross the finish line," says podiatrist Peter Bellezza, DPM. The treatment for heel pain is rest, ice, stretching and support. I recommend taking a break for a few weeks to help in your recovery. If you decide to continue and run, take it easy and reduce the number of miles. Avoiding hills is also a good idea, especially with tendonitis. Icing your foot can help reduce any damage; usually 20 minutes of ice should be enough.

"Stretching calf muscles is another way to help treat these two issues since these muscles are all attached to the foot and the heel. Start off slowly with some gentle stretching a few times a day to ease back into your routine. Some runners have used a night splint to keep the foot in position overnight which keeps the tendons and plantar fascia from contracting," says Dr. Bellezza.

GA Podiatrist Works with College Students on Diabetic Research
An unofficial motto of Berry College’s HackBerry Lab concerns failure. “We like to say we fail forward,” said Zane Cochran, founder of the lab and instructor at the college. One of the student groups will be tasked with remedying the foot problems of diabetic patients. Students will work with local podiatrist Stephan LaPointe, DPM, PhD, who has a doctorate in biomedical engineering,

They will be presented with the issue of those with diabetes continuing to walk on their sore-covered feet without knowing because they can’t feel them, Cochran said. The goal is for students to spread awareness about the matter and use technology for human augmentation, alerting patients to the condition of their feet.

The APMA National Held in DC
Podiatrists converged on the Washington, DC, area last week for the 2018 APMA Annual Scientific Meeting (The National). APMA Components presented lectures on everything from heel pain to sports injuries to vascular disease. Hands-on workshops covered minimally invasive surgical techniques, total contact casting, osteopathic manipulation, and more. Many of the podiatrists on hand were able to learn alongside their staff, who were attending the Assistants’ Program in conjunction with the American Society of Podiatric Medical Assistants. Future physicians got their first look at the profession during the Step Into Podiatry event for prospective students.

“The meeting was, as usual, a celebration of the podiatric medical and surgical community,” said APMA President Dennis R. Frisch, DPM. Podiatry Management installed the two newest members of its Hall of Fame, young physicians gathered at a dedicated reception sponsored by the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons, and more than 100 runners and walkers supported the APMA Educational Foundation during the Team APMA 5K Run/Walk.

You have EHR software, and you have practice management software. But they aren’t on speaking terms. They don’t even speak the same language, and this language barrier may be doing more harm to your practice than you realize. Integrating these two systems can fix a lot of problems. If you’ve been hesitating to take the plunge, here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t wait.
1. You’ll save time - “Integrating medical records and practice management software cuts out a lot of duplicate effort,” says Laurie Morgan, a San Francisco-based senior consultant and partner with medical consulting firm Capko & Morgan. If your programs are not integrated, the billing staff has to re-key what providers have written or logged somewhere else.

Query: Sézary Syndrome
Does anyone have experience treating patients with Sézary syndrome? My patient, the first one I've ever seen with this condition, has weeping lower extremity edema and hyperkeratosis on the soles of his feet. Any input is appreciated.

This might be the opportunity to get rid of the crazy rules for foot care. Perhaps we should work with CMS to create a podiatry specific G code which includes a subsequent visit, treatment of nails, corns and calluses as well as prescriptions for creams or shoes and is paid at the level of the "subsequent visit" code for MDs. Remove all of the nonsense about class findings, non-covered services, 60-day global period, and the need for us to send patients to their MD every 6 months.
We might get paid a little less per patient, but it would remove so many headaches, it would be worth it. It would also greatly reduce fraud and abuse and unfair competition. Many of my patients tell me they have always been covered under Medicare when I tell them they are not covered.

"Shockingly, CMS wants to create podiatry-specific G codes for E/M."
This is probably so that CMS and any other insurance company computers will be programmed to immediately distinguish a "Podiatry" E/M "G" level service from that billed by any other provider billing for the same level E/M service. Podiatry will be contracted at a lower rate. To me, this seems like a bad idea and is discriminatory. The same level E/M code should be paid based on payment allowance for that specific level of coding, not based on the medical specialty. Now, on the other hand, if they are going to pay podiatry more for the same level "G" E/M code, I am just fine with that.
I ask PM News readers, what are the chances of that happening? Will "G" codes only be for Medicare? Will we be allowed to append a G code with a -25 modifier like we can do with an E/M code, when applicable? It looks like we got more trouble right here in River City.
