On July 13, 2026, Heavenly Productions Foundation’s (HPF) Executive Board Member Linda Katzen Swartz and Co-Founder and HPF Executive Board Member, Kathy Reilly Fallon DPM, delivered and donated 150 backpacks and school supplies to the pediatric clinic at Touro University’s Foot Clinic of New York (FCNY) and presented them to Mr. Joel Sturm, COO and VP of Administration for Touro-NYCPM/FCNY.

Not Everyone Needs to Avoid Wearing Flip-Flops: MN Podiatrist

"It is true that the risk of falling is higher in flip-flops, but this risk applies to all shoes that do not secure well to the foot such as high heels, mules, clogs, or even poorly fitting shoes," says Paul Langer, DPM, a member of the International Society for Footwear Research and Innovation (ISFRI). "Additionally, there is no evidence in the research that flip-flops increase the risk of heel pain or toe alignment changes in people with healthy feet any more than other types of footwear. Heel pain, hammertoes, and bunions are very common in the general population, even in those who have never worn flip-flops. Many factors contribute to these foot concerns including genetics, lifestyle, and biomechanical imbalances."

Dr. Paul Langer

"Flip-flops place more demand on the muscles and joints of the feet than conventional shoes, and that can be a good thing. Having a capacity to wear footwear with little to no support is an important part of long-term foot health. An often-overlooked benefit of flip-flops (and more broadly, sandals) is that they let our feet spread out more than shoes typically do. This is one of the reasons people find flip-flops comfortable," says Dr. Langer.

PODIATRIC PODCASTS
IL Podiatrist Reviews Golf Biomechanics

Ben Pearl, DPM and Marlene Reid, DPM recently discussed golf lower extremity biomechanics on Dr. Pearl’s podcast Fit Foot U. Dr. Reid broke down the phases of golf, explaining how podiatric conditions like sinus tarsi syndrome and posterior tibial tendon pathology can necessitate changes in a golfer's swing from set-up to follow through. Here is a video clip from the podcast.

Dr. Marlene Reid

Dr. Reid said that it's important for all podiatric physicians to be aware of key takeaways to help their patients who play golf.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Places to Look for Revenue Cycle Leaks Before They Drain Your Practice

5. Don't trust your claim scrubber to catch payer tricks.

Most scrubbers catch the obvious coding errors. Far fewer catch payer-specific edits, modifier traps, or the down-coding patterns above. The fix is custom edits built from your own claims data, targeting the rules your payers actually apply.

One group of 30 orthopaedic surgeons re-assigned two full-time employees to build what it calls innovative claims edits, flagging known payer rules before claims leave the building: remove 76942 when 64447 and 64450 are billed together, flag modifier -26 without place of service 31, catch a missing modifier -22 on Medicare claims. Start by asking what your scrubber actually catches, then build edits for everything missed. The obstacle, again, is the way to better reimbursement.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
IRS Tax Deductions and Credits You Need to Know

Lowering your taxable income is the key to paying less to the IRS. Several federal tax deductions and credits can help.

1. The standard deduction

If you are like most taxpayers, you take the standard deduction instead of itemizing deductions.
  • The standard deduction reduces your taxable income by a predetermined, fixed dollar amount.
  • Itemized deductions can also reduce your taxable income, but the amount varies and is not predetermined.
  • Due to inflation adjustments and the enactment of the 2025 Trump/GOP tax bill, also known by some as the "big, beautiful bill," the base standard deduction amount remains high and has increased for the 2025 tax year.

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
Grading Yourself After Surgery

Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:

Self-assessment can either accelerate growth or fuel imposter syndrome, depending on how you approach it. It's useful to break evaluation down to 4 domains.

2B. Technical Execution

When reflecting here, try to be both honest and balanced. What went well? What felt challenging? What would YOU approach differently? Residents are often exceptional at cataloging every mistake while completely overlooking genuine improvement — effective self-assessment requires both sides of that ledger. Also pay close attention to attending feedback. Did they adjust your technique? Were there moments that they intervened or offered guidance? Did they identify habits to improve or strengths to continue building? Those observations often reveal things that are difficult to recognize in the moment.

Not every closure will be your best closure. Not every dissection will feel smooth. Some procedures will expose weaknesses you didn't know you had — that discomfort is not evidence of failure. It is often evidence that you are stretching beyond your current skill set and learning something new.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Is DEA License Required for Non-Narcotics?

Do I have to have a narcotics license to prescribe non-narcotic medication? I have heard conflicting information on this subject.

Sam Bell, DPM, Schenectady, NY

Editor’s comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. The short answer is no, you legally do not need a federal narcotics license (a DEA registration number) to prescribe non-narcotic, non-controlled medications (such as standard antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors, or topical antifungals). The conflicting information you heard was probably based on the fact that some hospitals and other entities may require you to have a DEA registration number.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
RE: New Bunion Splints vs. New MIS Bunion Procedures
From: Evan F. Meltzer, DPM

Lately, I have been seeing posts on Facebook about a new bunion splint. The first few posts were clearly advertising the splint as a permanent solution to correct a painful bunion deformity without surgery. The last post I read was another advertisement for the splint, but this one was endorsed by one of our podiatric colleagues. She incorrectly emphasized the exaggerated costs of the surgery, the extensive recovery time, and recurrence rate following surgery. Of course, we all know that she is being compensated for her endorsement of this splint.

I retired before the introduction of the new MIS bunion procedures, but having done many successful bunion surgeries in the traditional method, it seems that the newer MIS procedures might have faster recovery times and less visible incisions. If this new splint “cures” bunions, then the biomechanics I learned at PCPM in the '70s and my own experience of 40+ years of practice must not have counted with respect to bunion surgery. I would appreciate hearing from my colleagues about their experiences with the new MIS procedures for bunions and their thoughts about this new “miracle” splint.
