PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Common Billing Mistakes to Avoid
It’s easy to make small mistakes when billing. Unfortunately, small mistakes can sometimes cost you big money. Fortunately, it might not be as difficult as you think to avoid them. Here are five ways to prevent some of the most common - and costly - billing mistakes.
1. Use the right modifiers - By now, everyone is accustomed to ICD-10. Or mostly accustomed. But modifiers can still be tricky. Not using modifiers can, of course, cause a claim to be denied. But so can using the wrong one. Making sure your staff is well-trained is key to avoiding this mistake. Don't waste time training and retraining staff on codes that you're practice doesn't use. Instead, be sure training focuses on any diagnoses and procedures your practice uses often.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
From: Joel Lang, DPM
What an absolutely terrible idea! PM News just finished a series of articles "10 Things More Important Than Money", which emphasized the importance of interpersonal relationships, personal values, and lifestyle taking precedent over accumulating wealth. In the end, the only thing that matters is the relationships you develop in your lifetime and that legacy you leave to those left behind. Let's explore the issue. Over a year's time, how many new patients will actually be "no-shows" and what would be the total monetary loss to the practice as compared to the annual gross income of the practice? Most all would agree that the percentage of loss is immeasurably small.
Compare that to the message you send, not only to the people you have not yet met, but to the current patients who will know about this policy and how they will then feel about your priorities. Every patient you alienate with this policy will not only represent that loss, but the lost referrals that patient might make in the future. If you have moved to a self-pay practice, you undoubtedly have great self-confidence, above average skills, and a stellar reputation in your community. Why jeopardize that for a few dollars?
The old adage of "patients don't care about how much you know, until they know how much you care". I prefer, "People won't always remember what you said, and they may forget what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel." We can never know the burdens others carry and what might make them do the things they do. Enjoy your success and celebrate it with the patients you have. Do not punish, but rather forgive, the patients you will never have. You will both be happier.
Joel Lang, DPM (retired), Cheverly, MD

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: William Long, DPM
APMA has endorsed several student debt relief bills. Your association also has worked with Congressional leaders for years to support legislation that would create new programs to provide graduates with opportunities to work in underserved areas in order to have their student loan debt entirely eliminated. There are currently several proposals before Congress to address this issue, but the costs are high, and with elections this fall, these bills have dim prospects of being passed.
APMA members are invited to review the list of APMA’s endorsed bills, including those regarding student debt, on our website (www.apma.org/FederalAdvocacy). These proposals are just that— proposals, and it will take monumental support from citizens to encourage elected officials to pass such legislation. APMA employs one full-time lobbyist to support the legislative goals of the profession, as identified by a committee of member volunteers. We strongly encourage members to become politically active. Use our eAdvocacy system (www.apma.org/eAdvocacy), get involved with state and federal candidates, and help us at the grassroots level to support the causes that are important to you.
William Long, DPM, Chair, APMA Legislative Committee

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD RESOLUTIONS) - PART 1A |
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH
You would think that after a 3-year residency, one would acquire a good enough set of surgical skills to easily pass a board exam. Well, the reality is that unfortunately that is not an accurate statement. My son is a 4th year podiatric medical student, and he has related to me on some of his externship programs the level of surgical training is average to poor at some programs. I believe that there are many factors for not being able to pass these exams. One of the many reasons is that the program did not prepare the resident well enough or that the resident was not engaged and had a lackadaisical attitude.
I have been told that probably a full 25% of the podiatry classes are filled with not the best and brightest students. I believe to solve these problems we as a profession need to work harder to recruit better talent into our schools. Bottom line it is not the fault of the examiners it is the fault of the quality of the residents we are graduating.
Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD RESOLUTIONS) |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, orthopedic surgeons said podiatric surgeons had a "weak board certification" process. They used this rhetoric as they discussed what to do with "the podiatry problem" and keep us from hospital privileges. We cannot afford to create a backdoor to certification. If we manufacture an alternate, weaker route to certification, orthopedic surgeons will again chime in with the "weak board certification" chant, and rightfully so.
Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD, Columbus, OH

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
I too was exposed to podiatric medicine after meeting Allen Stark at the Career Fair at UC Irvine. I recall a very crowded event except for his area. I felt sorry for him as he took the time off from his office to I decided to speak to him until “something good” opened up.
He invited me to his office where I visited regularly, and I was always welcome to stay for lunch. His wife Sandra was terrific and decided I needed to get married to the daughter of a colleague of Allen's who started his gynecology practice at the same time as Allen. I followed Sandra’s instructions and we will be married 35 years in November. Allen was a true mensch in every sense of the word and will be missed.
