HEALTHCARE NEWS
Docs Urge Congress to Step in as CMS Proposes Cuts to Payments

The Biden administration is proposing cuts to physician payments in its annual fee schedule, and doctors are not happy. Major industry groups have roundly called for Congress to step in to prevent the Medicare reimbursement changes from going through. Last week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed a 3.34% cut to the fee schedule's conversion factor, which is used to calculate Medicare payouts to docs.

In a statement, the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) said that Medicare payments already fail to keep up with "the increasing cost of delivering healthcare," and further cuts would only exacerbate that problem. “AMGA members cannot absorb this proposed payment cut,” said AMGA President and CEO Jerry Penso, MD. “Their expenses are continuing to increase, and Congress needs to act to ensure Medicare’s reimbursement reflects the cost of delivering high-quality care to patients."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Successfully Gather Online Reviews for Your Practice

Patients often rely on Google searches to find a healthcare provider, and the number of positive reviews your practice has determines how well you’ll rank when searched. The more reviews you get, the more likely you are to bring in new patients. Here are some ways to win more reviews for your practice and attract more patients over time.

5. Respond to every review–both positive and negative.

Successfully gathering reviews includes responding to patients to thank them or take negative feedback constructively. Replying to reviews gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your patient-first approach—especially since most people expect healthcare practices to acknowledge feedback. With positive feedback, be sure to thank the patient, use personalized language, and recognize what you’re doing to make them happy.

With negative feedback, you should maintain the same positive decorum while empathizing with their frustration. Demonstrate that you’re willing to do whatever it takes to resolve their issue. The quicker you are to resolve a problem, the more you stand a chance at gaining repeat visits from them.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Are there specific guidelines on how often you must see a patient before giving them a medication refill?

This week, two patients called me for refills for a med for chronic pain. When I looked at their charts, I realized that neither one had seen me for a year. Being that nothing has changed physically, getting them to come in for a follow-up visit was like reeling in big fish. They fought it on every ground. "I don't need to be seen. I am too busy," etc. I held my ground and had both come in.

Is there a guideline in podiatry for how often you must see a patient for whom you are prescribing a chronic medication, for any pedal condition? Internists will see their patients every 4 months for chronic conditions where meds are being prescribed. Do we need to see a patient every four months if, for example, we are managing their diabetic neuropathy with gabapentin or their onychomycosis with a prescribed topical?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
From: Ben Cullen, DPM

I am shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Golta. She was a classmate and although it is difficult to believe it has been 13 years since I saw her, it feels like yesterday we were in the same cohort. Golta was always very nice and seemed full of life. May She Rest in Peace. I send well-wishes to those she left behind.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Alexander Terris, DPM

Dr. Caringi, I feel your pain. I retired last year and experienced the same thing. I was shocked how ABFAS handles these situations. For all the years of dues they collected and the costs of re-certifications, you would think you would still be allowed to be recognized for your accomplishments while you were practicing. I found their handling of this situation distasteful.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: The Podiatrist’s Anthem

In a world of feet, I'm here to mend,
A podiatrist's touch, a healing friend.
From heel to toe, I'll be your guide,
To keep you walking strong with pride.

(Chorus)
I'm the healer of soles, the foot's best friend,
With every step you take, I'll be there to mend.
From bunions to corns, I'll make it right,
As a podiatrist, I'll bring the light.

(Verse 2)
Through the arches and the tender toes,
I'll ease your pain, no need for...
