New College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Names VP of Strategic Development
The new college of podiatric medicine and surgery leading to a DPM/MD degree has added John Wiercinski, FACHE, former Vice President of Geisinger Health System, as their Vice-President of national strategic development. “I am very pleased to take on this challenging role and help podiatric physicians attain a level of acceptance equal to MDs and DOs,” stated Wiercinski. “Podiatry has a very difficult road ahead with being a limited licensed provider in the new healthcare era, and it must be addressed now,” added Wiercinski.
|
|
John Wiercinski |
“John has an extensive background in healthcare administration, being a former CEO who has proven affiliations with many hospitals, insurance companies, political ties in Washington DC, and healthcare litigators in Washington, DC over the past 30 years,” stated Sev Hrywnak DPM, MD. “As we build our leadership team, we have sought out the best, the brightest, and the ones who can take podiatry and podiatric education to the much needed next level: A full license,” added Hrywnak.

Don't Stop Running During the Summer: FL Podiatrist
Dr. Richard Wilson of Melbourne Podiatry Associates, a runner and a podiatrist, says that it is fine to back off training a little during the hottest months of the year, but putting a stop to it all together is unwise.
|
|
Dr. Richard Wilson |
He wrote in Running Zone’s Starting Line newsletter, “Many runners decrease their mileage during the summer, and this is fine. It is inadvisable, however, to stop running completely. Every runner knows, and the literature consistently confirms, that deconditioning from not running occurs very quickly. To avoid this, continue running throughout the summer, but consider reduced mileage and try to run in the cooler times of day such as early morning or early evening.”

GA Podiatrist Provides Blister Care Advice for Runners
After running, inspect your feet and look for problems such as blisters. If you have one, clean it well and apply a pad to help cushion and protect the area. Most blisters will heal on their own, but if you have one that doesn't, you can drain it yourself. "Most blisters can be drained, but they have to be drained appropriately," Dr. Perry Julien, a podiatrist with Atlanta Foot and Ankle Center, (and a runner himself) said.
|
|
Dr. Perry Julien |
First clean the skin, and use a clean, sterile needle to drain the blister. Cover it with antiseptic and a bandage, making sure to leave the skin over the top intact. According to Julien, it acts as the body's own bandage to protect the tender skin underneath.

APMA Co-Sponsors Former HHS Secretary at RNC
Former Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, JD, a Republican who also formerly served as the governor of Wisconsin, told the audience at a briefing at the Republican National Convention (PNC) that he didn't think his party should try to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. "I do not believe ... that my political party is going to be able to put together a complete repeal, and I don't think it should," said Thompson, who is currently a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington.
Thompson was the keynote guest at the briefing, which was hosted by RealClear Politics and sponsored by Walgreens, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the American Nurses Association, and the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Antibiotics: New CDC Stewardship Program Will Affect Most U.S. Prescribers
Antibiotic resistance has been declared a crisis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization, and President Obama. The concern is that we will soon face a "post-antibiotic era." The genesis of this crisis was the failure of new antibiotics to keep pace with resistance and the massive overuse of these drugs. A shocking observation is that on any given day, about 50% of all hospitalized patients in the United States receive antibiotics. The consensus is that antibiotics are given too often, for too long, and are too broad in spectrum.
The CDC has responded with a comprehensive program designed to facilitate the smart use of antibiotics, slow resistance, and improve patient care. All healthcare facilities that receive funding from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will be required to participate in the program, so all healthcare providers who prescribe antibiotics within these facilities will likely be affected.

Healthcare Spending Growth Rate Rises Again in 2015
Government agencies, companies, and consumers spent a lot more on healthcare in 2015 than the prior year. It's another result of the U.S. reducing its uninsured rate to historic lows through healthcare reform, which has spurred demand for more hospital services, clinic visits, and prescription drugs.
The U.S. healthcare system spent $3.2 trillion in 2015, or almost $10,000 for every person, according to the latest federal projections. It's a 5.5% increase from 2014—still a lot lower than the annual growth rates from decades ago, but a tick higher than the 5.3% increase recorded in 2014 and above the rates seen in the immediate aftermath of the Affordable Care Act and the Great Recession. Government economists also reaffirmed their prediction that national health spending will grow by 5.8% each year on average over the next decade.

MACRA, MIPS, and APMs — Are You Ready? - Part 6
4. Monitor your profile on the Physician Compare site
Physician Compare is based on your QRUR data. This information is made readily available to the public as a means for consumers to select providers who meet and exceed CMS' quality measures. See how you are currently performing and adjust as necessary to optimize your score.
If you are not already participating in a patient clinical data registry, contact your specialty society about participating in theirs, as data registries can streamline reporting and assist with MIPS performance scoring.

Query: Chronic Edema One Year Status-Post Austin Bunionectomy
I have a 55-year-old female patient with an unremarkable past medical history who underwent an Austin bunionectomy and Silastic implant replacement of the second MPJ approximately one year ago. She had an unremarkable post-operative course except for a little more swelling than normal. At 31/2 months post-op, she was discharged with some mild swelling in her foot which I expected to resolve shortly. She presented to my office almost one year post-op with chronic swelling of the first interspace.
X-rays were unremarkable and showed good bone healing with the implant intact. Her range of motion of both joints is good and pain-free. She did not respond to compression sleeves, cortisone injection, or physical therapy. An MRI showed soft tissue swelling in the first interspace, but no signs of a cyst or tumor. There is some granulation tissue noted around the second MPJ. She does not have any pain or erythema. There is just this chronic swelling in the first webspace. She has trouble fitting into shoes and that is her chief complaint. Any ideas?
