PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS

FL Podiatrists Cringe From Flip-Flops

They’re easy, relatively inexpensive, and they can be highly fashionable. They’re a symbol of the Sunshine State and its laid-back, go-to-the-beach lifestyle. They are flip-flops, and the very sight of them can make a podiatrist cringe. “Oh, flip-flops,” said Dr. Richard Wilson of Melbourne Podiatry Associates. “We see so many problems associated with flip-flops.”

(L-R) Drs. Richard Wilson and Kevin Lynch

“A lot of foot problems are related to wearing flip-flops,” added Dr. Kevin Lynch of Advanced Foot & Ankle Center in Titusville. “If you come in the door complaining of foot pain and are wearing flip-flops, I can tell you right away what the problem is.” Lynch explained that with a spongy-soled, open-back shoe such as the flip-flop, the foot is likely to roll inward when it strikes the ground, causing it to roll more than it normally would.

EHR Adoption by Physicians Hit 55% in 2011, CDC Says

Physician adoption of the electronic health record (EHR) may be at — or even past — the proverbial tipping point, or so suggests a government study released yesterday that is a litany of progress.

In 2011, 55% of physicians reported having adopted an EHR, and of those, 85% said they were either somewhat or very satisfied with the technology, according to the report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Roughly 3 in 4 physicians using EHRs said the software enhanced overall patient care. And 71% of digital physicians would buy their EHR program again.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)

RE: Artificial Toenail Innovation/Successes
From: Eric Hart, DPM

I remember reading a PM News posting regarding a recent "artificial toenail innovation." I've not been able to find the source of this new and improved replacement toenail online. I'm interested in any PM News reader feedback on them; in particular, from anyone who has used them on their own toe. I would love to give my female patients better information on cosmetic tips for the post-matrixectomy nail bed.

Query: HIPAA Manual Update

Is there any reliable source to update a HIPAA manual from the original 2002 APMA HIPAA Manual that was available to members? In other words, is there a website that DOESN'T re-direct to free market "purchase" sites?

Robert K Hall, DPM, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Response: If you are a member of APMA, log onto apma.org using your user name and password (call the APMA if you forgot it). Go to the "Manage Your Practice" tab found at the top of the page, then on the left side, go to the "Practice Tools" tab. Click the "Compliance Materials" tab under that header, and, lo and behold, there is "HIPAA - APMA is pleased to present to members the revised APMA Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy and Security Manuals." Membership does have its privileges!

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1

RE: Best Laser for Onychomycosis (Greg Teles, DPM)
From: Robert A. Kornfeld, DPM

Lasers are proving themselves to be better and better at dealing with the presenting symptoms in the nail bed and plate. But please, please do not be fooled into believing that the laser is a reliable permanent solution. This is not a purely local phenomenon. It is systemic and has specific causes (mechanisms) that must be addressed to effect a long-term cure. I have much to share with this profession and I patiently await your embrace.

RE: "Press Ganey" Surveys (Marjorie C. Ravitz, DPM)
From: Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM

Press Ganey is a highly reputable company that develops and administers surveys in the medical field. I am not sure what "deal with them" means, but we have had them do several surveys of our patients and have always been satisfied with the results. They are trained to produce surveys that minimize bias and obtain data helpful to improve practice management.
