NY Podiatrist Fined for Failing to Maintain Accurate Patient Records
A Camillus foot doctor has been fined $500 and put on probation for one year after admitting guilt to professional misconduct. The state Education Department issued a censure and reprimand against podiatrist Samuel Brechbill Rameas for failing to maintain accurate patient records. The state cited four cases in 2010 involving record-keeping problems. In two cases, he billed for his services without adequately documenting what treatment was performed on the patient, according to the state.

Research Links Ankle Injury to Health Problems Later in Life
Research from the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences indicates an ankle injury might have a larger effect on long-term health. Phillip Gribble, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, and his team surveyed more than 3,600 adults to ask about previous ankle injury and current health status. They were surprised to see indications that people with injured ankles tend to have higher rates of health issues later in life. Gribble noted that while many of those issues were intuitive, such as ankle arthritis; others were rather unexpected.
"We found higher rates of heart or respiratory ailments in people who'd injured their ankle versus those who hadn't – about 31 percent versus 24.5 percent, respectively," Gribble said. Gribble, who cautioned that the study doesn't prove cause and effect, said the findings suggest that ankle fractures and sprains should be taken more seriously. "It's logical to assume that ankle sprains are relatively benign injuries, but this research seems to imply that isn't so," Gribble said.

| HIPAA UPDATE | |
Second Phase of HIPAA Audits Shifts into High Gear
The long-awaited second phase of the HIPAA audit program of the HHS Office for Civil Rights is now in full swing. According to OCR, some covered entities have received notification letters regarding their inclusion in the desk audit portion of the program. “These entities have 10 business days, until July 22, 2016, to respond to the document requests,” OCR said in the announcement. “Desk audits of business associates will follow this fall.
Phase 2 of OCR’s audit program is primarily focused on desk audits of policies and procedures, compared with Phase 1. OCR hopes this approach will enable the agency to be more effective in audits with fewer resources than would be required to support full onsite audits for all organizations. “The desk audits are focused examinations of documentation of entity compliance with certain requirements of the HIPAA rules,” according to the announcement. “OCR selected these provisions for focus during the desk audits because our pilot audits, as well as our enforcement activities, have surfaced these provisions as frequent areas of non-compliance.”
