OBITUARIES

Dr. Jerauld D. Ferritto, Sr., 80

It is with sadness that we report the loss of Dr. Jerauld D. Ferritto, Sr., of Grove City, OH who passed away Monday July 16, 2007. After attending Syracuse University, he enlisted in the US Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan following the war. Dr. Ferritto returned home and graduated in 1951 from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and maintained his practice on the Westside of Columbus for 50 years before retiring.

Dr. Ferritto was a leading member in his field, his professional achievements include; President of the Ohio Podiatric Medical Association, Vice President of the State of Ohio Medical Board, President of the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners, and recipient of the Distinguished Service Citation from the American Podiatric Medical Association. He was the only two-time President (1975 & 1976) of Vaud Villities and was an accomplished pianist.

Dr. Jerauld D. Ferritto, Sr. (R) installs his son as APMA President

The only thing that gave Dr. Ferritto greater joy than serving others was loving and caring for his wife and family. He also took great pride in leaving this profession a living legacy in form of his son, Dr. J.D. Ferritto, Jr., who became an APMA president.

PM News policy is to recommend that memorial donations be made to the APMA Educational Foundation's Student Endowment Fund, 9312 Old Georgetown Rd., Bethesda, MD 20814.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

WA Podiatrist and Wife Establish Children's Refuge in Guatemala

Dr. Will Boegel, one of eight children, was just 7 when his mother died. And while his father eventually remarried, Boegel says there was a time when he knew "what it was like to be almost an orphan, where you understand that you need help from God and from other people." Boegel, now 50, is a successful Kirkland podiatrist who has worked at Virginia Mason for 20 years.

Dr. William Boegel

He and his wife, Diane, a nurse with Evergreen Orthopedic Surgery Center, have three grown children. Many at that stage might settle for a life of golf, sailing or travel mixed with career. Not so for the Boegels, whose growing passion for service is fueled by deep faith. Their travels take them not on destination vacations but to areas worldwide in need of medical care.

The Boegels, who live in Bothell, have established a not-for-profit called Opal House, the name the children's refuge will bear once it is up and operational. "Opal is the gemstone that owes all of its fire and beauty to the broken fissures in it," Will Boegel says. "The more broken fissures, the more light and air it reflects. Opal House is for the broken children of Guatemala."

QUERIES

Query: Definition of “On The Job Injury”

I have a mail carrier as a patient who presented to my office with a chief complaint of pain under her foot. She recalled while on her route feeling a discomfort in her foot and did not pay it any mind. The pain progressively worsened. What defines an "on the job injury?" Is it simply an injury which occurred while "on the clock"? It appears this patient's company is giving her a hard time in regard to this injury being an "on the job injury."

Jeffrey Kass, DPM, Forest Hills, NY

Editor’s comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. Generally, the legal term of art is “within the scope of employment.” This can vary depending on the job description. If, in fact, her injury occurred in the course of delivering mail, it seems like that did would qualify as being work-related. In many cases this determination is necessary to determine whether benefits are due under Worker’s Comp or a private insurance carrier.

The fact that an injury occurs “on the clock” is generally not dispositive because an employee, who suffers an injury on a lunch hour or doing personal work on company time, would not be considered “within the scope of employment.”

Because we are physicians and not attorneys, the best we can do is make a diagnosis and render treatment. It’s up to the patient to contact her union or attorney to fight it out with the USPS.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS

RE: Board Certification After Lapse From Practice (James Richardson, DPM)
From: Richard A. Simmons, DPM

With all due respects to Dr. Richardson’s abilities, eight years out of practice is a very long time not to be performing surgery. If his desire is to perform surgery, he should apply and go through a surgical residency program and then become board certified by the ABPS.

Richard A. Simmons, DPM, Viera, FL, RASDPM32822@aol.com

RE: Argentinean Orthopedists Report on MIS Bunionectomies
From: Richard Rettig, DPM

The OrthoSupersite is reporting a synopsis of an article that appears in Orthopedics, July 2007, titled "Minimally Invasive Surgery in Hallux Valgus and Digital Deformities" http://www.orthosupersite.com/default.asp?page=view&rid=22701

This article, out of Argentina, reports on the use of the Shannon 44 burr to perform unfixated MIS bunionectomies for mild to moderate deformities with IM angles of 10 to 20 degrees (their characterization). They even find a really novel way to use a K-wire without actually fixating the osteotomy. They do not mention post-operative ROM or dorsi-flexion of the head. I guess it is all in the bandaging!

Richard Rettig, DPM, Philadelphia, PA, rettigdpm@verizon.net

RE: OTC Shoe for Limb Length Discrepancy (Doug Mason, DPM)
From: Robert S. Schwartz, C. Ped.

Any good pedorthic technician can elevate just about any shoe, including those with molded soles. The list of brands that produce supportive footwear that can be built up include every athletic and walking shoe brand. For the pedorthist nearest you, go to www.abcop.org.
