PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
IA Podiatrist Joins Pocahontas Community Hospital

Going to a doctor’s office at the clinic attached to Pocahontas Community Hospital has a different look and feel to it. Beginning in August, a new podiatrist, Robert Ivey, DPM, will begin seeing patients there. He will work in Pocahontas and Storm Lake.

Dr. Robert Ivey

Dr. Ivey earned his podiatric medical degree at the Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery and completed his podiatric residency at Sanford Health in Fargo, North Dakota.

OUTSIDE INTERESTS
Aviation License Plate Designed by FL Podiatrist Approved

Described by the creators as “telling the story of general aviation (GA),” the approved license plate features a colorful collection of GA airplanes flying in clear blue skies. Local pilots Joseph Hurtuk; Richard Golightly; and Ian Goldbaum, DPM a podiatric physician and surgeon, came up with the idea and designed the plate, and Nicola Zordan joined the team to help promote it.

They want to assist Floridians who are seeking careers in aviation and provide recognition for the robust aviation community in the state—as Florida ranks in the top three states for GA activity and the industry contributes significantly to the economy. Proceeds from the sale of these plates will support aviation scholarships.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
10 Things More Important Than Money

In the past few decades, healthcare has focused on money as a metric of practice success. Yes, we can only have a comfortable livelihood with money. Still, some areas of life are far more important than the girth of your investment portfolio or the size of your bank account.

10. Finally, have fun. - I have appreciated the advice to take your profession seriously rather than yourself. Physician burnout has reached epidemic proportions. Many doctors spend too much time and energy chasing money and worldly things and end up sad and disappointed. My father once advised me, "Neil, as you climb the ladder of success, be sure when you reach the top of the ladder that your ladder is not facing the wrong wall." This advice helps me ensure I have priorities beyond being financially successful. It is imperative to pull back, look for humor that can be found everywhere, and make it possible to laugh at yourself occasionally.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Requiring a Deposit on Booking

I am considering charging a deposit for new patients when they schedule an appointment. This fee would be deducted from their initial visit. However, if they were a no call/no show, or cancelled with less than 48 hours, they would lose the deposit. I initiated this policy in my veterinary practice about 5 years ago, and it has reduced our No call/no shows to nearly zero. I did not consider implementing this policy when I was accepting insurance because it was a bit tricky with the contracts I had.

However, since I am now self-pay, it should work. The question I have is regarding Medicare. I do not accept assignment and patients pay at the time of their visits. However, as per Medicare policy, we do file for covered services with traditional Medicare (NOT any Advantage plans) and Medicare reimburses the patients. Does anyone know if I can require a deposit for booking an appointment for a new Medicare patient?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Medical School Debt
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

According to a  recent report, average medical school debt now is greater than $200,000. Many states now have programs which help to erase some or all of the debt.  Why is podiatry school debt which likely is as much if not more than the average medical school debt not provided with these same programs? Where are the schools or APMA with respect to obtaining the same level of financial relief for these students/residents/young practitioners?

Students are already encumbered with hundreds of thousands of dollars in undergraduate debt. The thought of taking on another $200K plus dollars in debt for podiatry school and then working as a resident for 3 more years is often a non-starter, deterring many from entering our profession.

I cannot fathom starting a family with the amount of debt these young people are faced with. The future of every practitioner and the APMA is in our students. The APMA and colleges must make this issue a priority. Podiatry school debt relief should receive the same relief programs as the MD/DO students/residents/young practitioners.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Steven Kravitz, DPM

I fail to understand why there is so much attention to podiatrists or at least some podiatrists trying to expand scope of practice beyond that of our specialty area - the foot and ankle. The concept of the serving as gatekeeper brings many questions, and I agree with Dr. Rodney Tomczak. The DPM degree has served me well and the podiatrists I know. My colleagues (many in wound care) have benefitted from their education and ability to practice medicine within the scope of DPM degree they earned. That degree points to the general public and more importantly to other medical providers that we are indeed specialists in the foot and ankle pathology. We have developed very good reputations generally; we as a group provide excellent service to patients. At the end of the day, it is the patient that matters.

Becoming gatekeepers necessitates overseeing treatment of medical conditions out of our scope of...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD RESOLUTIONS)
From: Lee C. Rogers, DPM

Even if you ignore the multiple false and misleading statements in ABFAS's letter to the APMA President whining about the One Board Task Force, there is one factual statement that should cause every podiatrist concern. "[The ABFAS] has set a high standard to ensure that its diplomates have the knowledge, skills, and abilities BEYOND those COMMONLY possessed upon the completion of a podiatric residency program ..." (emphasis added).

Board certification should not be uncommon in podiatric medicine and surgery. ABFAS's self-described and elitist standard above the CPME standards for residency programs is one of the central issues that resulted in support for the One Board Task Force.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Allan R. Stark, DPM
From: Eric Thuen, DPM, Gary Dorfman, DPM, Allan Weiss, DPM

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of Dr. Allan Stark. Dr. Stark was solely responsible for my decision to apply to CCPM in 1976, having met him at a career fair at UC Irvine. He invited me to shadow him in his office, where I was taken by his positive attitude and love of the profession. Dr. Stark was so engaging and loved by his patients. As previously stated by others, Dr. Stark was a “gentleman and kind soul”. I will always be indebted to him for leading me to this fine profession. Thank you Allan.

Eric Thuen, DPM, Oceanside, CA

It’s certainly not unusual to lose contemporaries, especially at my age. I have known Alan since 1960. He graduated from CCPM in 1963, the class behind mine. We were professional colleagues who grew up in our profession together and we became fast friends. He was dedicated to advancing his profession educationally, politically, and ethically. Thanks for sticking around so long Alan. You have been an inspiration to all who have crossed your path, and my sincere condolences to your family.

Gary Dorfman, DPM, Dana Point, CA

Alan, Rest in peace.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
Spray-on Sneaker Will Make History at 2024 Olympics

Hellen Obiri, the Kenyan distance runner and two-time Olympic silver medalist, will make history at the 2024 Paris Olympics — thanks to her shoes. Obiri will be sporting a new sneaker from sportswear company On, but it’s far from a typical sneaker. On’s Cloudboom Strike LS is spray-on footwear.

On's Cloudboom Strike LS - a spray-on sneaker

“LS” stands for LightSpray, the trademarked name of the technology used to create the shoes. It works by placing a foot form on the arm of a robot as the shoe’s entire upper part is sprayed on from a single continuous filament — in just three minutes, according to Fast Company.
