PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Plantar Fasciitis at Epidemic Proportions: NY Podiatrist

“Plantar fasciitis seems to have recently reached epidemic proportions,” says Doug Tumen, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist and author of Ask the Foot Doctor. “Because the average person takes at least 5000-7000 steps per day, and because we live in a world of concrete and hard surfaces, our feet are continually taking a significant impact and load on a daily basis.”

Dr. Doug Tumen

While there is no one cause of plantar fasciitis, we do know that some things can exacerbate it. Tumen says that repetitive stress, weight gain, improper shoes, exercise, and sporting activities (especially repetitive motions or new activity), along with natural tightening of our muscles and tendons over time, can all contribute to developing plantar fasciitis.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Ultramarathon Winner in Sandals is an Outlier: NJ Podiatrist

Last Thursday, runners took off on a cross-Tennessee journey for the 2019 edition of the Last Vol State 500K, a race created by Barkley Marathon's founder Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell. And it was a sandals-wearing local who was the first to join Cantrell at the finish line. While Armstrong is sold on the benefits of racing in sandals, we were not so much, so we reached out to a podiatrist to see what an expert thought. Though the structure is sound because the heel and toe straps keep the foot in place, it is not recommended that people race in sandals of any kind, said Alan Bass, DPM, a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association and a podiatrist in Manalapan, NJ.

Dr. Alan Bass

“This is an outlier,” Bass said. “This is a rebel who is great and has no problems at all, but 99 out of 100 [people] I would say would probably not be comfortable running in this type of shoe."

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 3
NJ Podiatrist Receives Lifesaving Transplant from his Daughter

In the United States, an estimated 100,000 people are in need of a kidney transplant, and some have to wait five to 10 years for a donor. Mark Bauman, DPM of Marlton is one of the lucky ones; he not only had three willing donors right away—all members of his family— but one of them, his daughter, Jaime Bauman Dwork, was a perfect match.

Jaime Bauman Dwork and Dr. Mark Bauman

Bauman, 66, a retired podiatrist and resident of South Jersey since 1974, raised his daughters Erica and Jaime in the area with his late wife Terri, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2011. Two years later, Bauman went to his doctor for a routine checkup and mentioned that, in the mornings, he had trouble getting his shoes on; it was easier after he had gone to the gym. “This is the opposite of what’s normal,” said Bauman, who spent decades healing people’s feet.

IN THE COURTS
One Suspect Found Guilty in CA Podiatrist’s Slaying

A jury convicted one of four suspects Thursday in last year’s killing of Lodi podiatrist Dr. Thomas Shock. Raymond Austin Jacquett, 27, was convicted of second-degree murder in the killing. He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 30.

The other defendants — Robert E. Lee, 79; Mallory Stewart, 28; and Christopher Costello, 27 — are still awaiting their trials. Shock, 67, was gunned down at 9:53 p.m. last Aug. 1 in his home in a quiet upscale neighborhood in north Lodi.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Questions to Ask about wRVU Compensation - Part 2

Physicians employed by a medical group, hospital, or academic institution are commonly compensated using a productivity formula based on work relative value units (wRVUs). Since wRVUs drive your paycheck, it’s to your advantage to ask questions in order to understand how the system works — and specifically how your employer counts wRVUs.

2. Do modifiers impact the wRVU credit? If so, how? Modifier impacts to wRVUs commonly cause physicians to believe they’ve been “cheated” out of compensation earned. Some groups discount the wRVU for the second side of bilateral procedures, consistent with the reimbursement methodology used by most payers. For example, for bilateral procedures (modifier 50), many payers will reimburse for 150 percent of the fee schedule, not 200 percent. Likewise, the hospital will credit the surgeon with less wRVUs. Physicians who discover this type of wRVU adjustment months or years into their employment are typically shocked at the perceived deception.
