Physicians Need to Prescribe More Muscle Strength Training: MI Podiatrist

According to Conway McLean, DPM, "The American public knows very well the importance of exercise, at least in a general sense. But few physicians, 17% according to recent studies, recommend exercise as a therapy. The reason may surprise you: most primary care providers feel inadequately trained to offer such a prescription. The conclusion is that the education of physicians is inadequate. Because exercise is one of the pillars of health, healthcare providers need to be taught how to address this issue with patients."

Dr. Conway McLean

"As we age, preserving strength and power has been shown to reduce the risk of death from any and all causes, especially cardiovascular. Muscle mass has a protective function in aging and in disease prevention, irrespective of one’s body composition, whether obese or underweight. But fewer than a quarter of Americans get the recommended two strength-training sessions per week. The benefits to various organ systems are numerous. And muscle health is clearly a key to healthy longevity," says Dr. McLean.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR

Well Designed Wedge Sandals Can Be Good for Your Feet: FL Podiatrist

Wedge sandals can be good for your feet, but it depends on their design. "Well-designed wedge sandals, particularly those with proper arch support and adequate cushioning, can be a good choice for your feet," suggests board-certified podiatrist Suzanne Fuchs, DPM. "They distribute weight more evenly across the foot compared to traditional high heels, which can reduce pressure on the forefoot."

Dr. Suzanne Fuchs

However, this depends on the heel height of your wedge sandal. While this style is considered more comfortable than standard high heels, "Very high-heeled wedges can still place increased pressure on the forefoot and alter your gait, potentially leading to discomfort or issues over time," says Dr. Fuchs. "Always prioritize styles that emphasize comfort and support."

QUERIES (FOOTWEAR)
Query: STAND+ Shoes

Being podiatrists, we are always looking for good shoe options to suggest to our patients, friends, and family. Recently, I came across a shoe called STAND+. Two models of most interest are the Antigrav1 and Antigrav2. Their website states their line of shoes have the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Approval. Has anyone tried on these shoes or know about this brand? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1A
RE: Is this a Stark Violation (Allen Jacobs, DPM)
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

Dr. Jacobs and others point out an excellent issue with Stark, which just by coincidence was published in today's Becker's ASC Review. It seems that private equity can take over numerous physician practices and allow for referral between the surgeon's practice and the MRI or PT or SurgiCenter or pharmacy, all without issue. Heaven forbid a physician with individual ownership refer to anyone of the above facilities. That by comparison is an actual Stark Violation.

Now more than ever, there is a need for a complete revision of the Stark laws. If corporate America can own all the above entities, then why is the individual doctor precluded from that same or similar arrangement? The Stark laws were appropriate when they were drafted, but they are at least inequitable today, possibly totally antiquated, and need to be revised to protect the physician as well as the patient. RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1B
From: Zach T. Heard

EBM Medical categorically rejects and forcefully disputes the false and misleading assertions recently made by the CEO of the Tetra Corporation on this website. These statements irresponsibly mischaracterize EBM Medical’s business model, falsely suggest legal violations, and attempt to undermine the ethical and lawful practices of healthcare providers who serve patients using EBM Medical’s innovative platform.

It is important to note that The Tetra Corporation is not an objective, disinterested party, but rather a direct, head-to-head competitor to EBM Medical, which stands to gain from any misinformation disseminated about our company. This inherent conflict of interest fundamentally undermines the credibility and integrity of these statements. Tetra’s personal stake in...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION)

RE: Educational Fallout and Uncomfortable Truths (Lawrence Oloff, DPM, John S. Steinberg, DPM)

It's good to hear from an occasional reader of my letters to PM News. I see you have recognized my hyperbole concerning the number of podiatry schools as a form of literary sarcasm. I have used the actual number 11 in all my posts thus far, but you may have missed those. One of my issues is the clandestine manner AACPM and CPME do business. At times, it appears they are a combination of the U.S. government’s NSA and CIA when it comes to my attempts at gathering data which should be available to anyone who would like the information. For all I know, the number of schools with partial accreditation or applications might well be more than 11. The accreditation fees of about $50,000 per school invites multiple applications. The entire process of accreditation for podiatry schools is detailed here

What I would like to see is a certificate of need by a sponsoring...
