New College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery to Offer Medical Video Lectures
The new college of podiatric medicine and surgery that will be offering an MD/DPM degree has signed Backlight Inc. as the platform to carry all medical video lectures. “The days of classroom lectures are gone,” stated Sev Hrywnak DPM, MD. "Medical education has evolved and the new incoming students will experience the new curriculum.” This new curriculum will have students from day one of their first year in clinical experiences, along with learning basic biomedical sciences through the use of video lectures. These video lectures will allow students to view the lecture at anytime and as many times as needed.
|
|
(L-R) Dr. Sev Hrywnak, Pete Gratale (President of Backlight, Inc), and Reynold Yordy (Chief Technology Officer of Backlight, Inc.). |
Under the new curriculum, students will attend a physician’s office twice a week and spend the rest of the time viewing lectures and taking self-assessment examinations online. The new curriculum will allow a student to finish basic biomedical sciences in 14 months, or they may take up to 20 months and be prepared to take Step 1 of the USMLE. Our affiliation in the Greater Chicago area with 25 Federally Qualified Health Centers will offer the best clinical exposure to patient care for students. “Tuition dollars will be spent on having the best teaching hospitals and clinics in our program," stated Stanley Blondek DPM, MD. “With so many clinical rotations at hospitals being taken lately by PAs, NPs, and foreign medical students, it is important that we secure these spots for our students by using tuition dollars for clinical medical education.”

Good Hygiene is Key to Preventing Foot Odor: MN Podiatrist
Your feet have more sweat glands per inch than any other part of the body—an average of 250,000 of them. They secrete sweat all the time, keeping your skin moist and supple. When you put your feet in a pair of shoes, the confinement allows fungi and bacteria to thrive. The teaming bacteria produce a substance called isovaleric acid, which emits the characteristic locker room stench associated with foot odor. “The fungi and bacteria, which are a normal part of our skin’s flora, proliferate in the dark, moist, warm environment of the shoes,” says Paul Langer, DPM. “Foot odor tends to be worse in warm weather and in active people.”
|
|
Dr. Paul Langer |
About 25% of us have issues with foot odor, according to an American Podiatric Medicine Association survey of 1,700 adults. The key to eliminating foot odor is good foot hygiene. Keep your feet scrupulously clean. Use warm, soapy water and wash your feet every day, says Dr. Langer. Scrub gently with a soft brush, even between your toes, and be sure to dry your feet thoroughly.

MD Podiatrist Publishes Book on Pain Management
Based upon success with thousands of patients as well as 7 previously published articles in podiatry, diabetes, and family practice journals, Dr. Stuart Goldman presents a new paradigm for pain management, through which podiatrists can frequently successfully relieve symptoms associated with all the conditions mentioned above, often within 1-2 days of appropriate treatment.
|
|
Dr. Stuart Goldman and Walking Well Again |
Neuropathy, arthritis, fibromyalgia, spinal stenosis, poor circulation, and restless leg syndrome are often the diagnosed cause of chronic pain and disability, but often not the actual cause of symptoms. Walking Well Again: Neutralize the Hidden Causes of Pain presents original insights and techniques designed to guide podiatrists to better understand, investigate, and frequently relieve chronic pain.

GA Podiatry Practice Ranked as "Best Place to Work"
Atlantic Foot and Ankle Specialists was recently named one of the Best Places to Work in Georgia. The survey and awards program was designed to identify and honor the best employers in Georgia. It was created by Georgia Trend and Best Companies Group. The list includes 17 companies.
To be considered, companies had to have at least 15 employees and been in business at least a year. Companies from across the state entered the two-part survey process. The first part evaluated each nominated company’s policies, practices, and demographics. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The winners will be profiled in the July issue of Georgia Trend.

Preventive Foot Care Could Cut Amputations in Half: NY Podiatrist
Doctors estimate that almost 50 percent of amputations in diabetics could have been prevented if the person had taken better care of their feet. "I can't emphasize enough how important it is for a person with diabetes to pay rigorous attention to their feet. Foot infections are the most common issue for a person with diabetes and are more severe and take longer to heal than in a person without diabetes," says Dr. Alan Farber, a doctor of podiatric medicine. Farber added, "Proper foot care is simple and includes things like using an antifungal daily, not only to heal, but also to prevent fungal infections, and using a moisturizer daily to heal and prevent dry, cracked skin."

Physicians Seek Employed Status to Weather Payment Risks
According to member surveys by the Medical Group Management Association, the share of physicians who worked directly for a hospital or in practices at least partially owned by a hospital rose from 29% in 2012 to 33% in 2014. Of 84 respondents this year to Modern Healthcare's hospital systems survey, almost all respondents added employed physicians in 2015 with the total physician employment among respondents showing a 9.8% increase year over year.
Physician practices purchased by third-party staffing companies in the first quarter nearly doubled to 21 groups compared with 13 in the year-ago quarter, said Michael Abrams, managing partner of healthcare management consultancy Numerof & Associates. The last time the industry saw such active physician consolidation was in the early 1990s, said Alan Badey, managing partner and co-leader of the healthcare practice at Citrin Cooperman.

Query: Chronic Onychia
My patient is a healthy 20-year-old female with non-traumatic onset of swelling and redness across the entire eponychium of the left hallux in March 2016. She had it about 3 months before her initial visit. She was initially treated with antibiotics and soaks, which did not help. X-rays were negative for any bone changes. No abscess was found. A subsequent culture revealed Staph species sensitive to all antibiotics and she was then placed on a different antibiotic, erythromycin, along with Bactroban use. This resulted in no improvement. A fungal work-up was negative.
|
|
Chronic Onychia |
There's still some occasional draining and also bleeding with a recent small granuloma present. The nail has never been ingrown or caused pain itself. There is some slight lysis distally. The eponychium remains sore with pressure. She has no other inflamed toenails or fingernails, with no history of any major illnesses before onset. The photo shows the inflamed eponychium which is unchanged from pre-treatment status with exception of the small granuloma. Before any other work-up or treatment, I would like the opinions of my colleagues on this chronic inflammation.

From: AAPSM Board
Recently PM News posted a story about a DPM who was reported to have been invited by the USOC to be part of the medical staff at the Olympic Games in Rio. The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine has forged relationships with the United States Olympic Committee both directly and through its membership in the Joint Commission of Sports Medicine. Several AAPSM members have volunteered, sometimes at their own expense, at Olympic venues and other World Championships.
Currently, there is no official medical staff that includes a DPM, including track and field. This has been verified with the Director of Clinical Research and Multidisciplinary Care for the USOC. According to him, the DPM claiming...
