Volunteering Changes Your Outlook on Life: AR Podiatrist
Dr. Jason Smith leaves the last hour of each work day at St. Peter’s Medical Group available for those who need to see him without benefit of an appointment. He also leaves open a portion of his life as a physician to help others for whom specialized medical care is at best distant and beyond their financial grasp. Smith, 33, specializes in podiatry -- care of the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg.

In the third year of his medical residency at a hospital in Greeley, CO, he had the opportunity to join another of the programs that ferry physicians to countries where medical care is desperately needed. The Yucatan Crippled Children’s Project took him to Merida, on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, which shares its coastline with the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Being able to help them, he explained, “it just really made me appreciate what I do...When I come back, it really does open your eyes, and it changes the way you look at everyday life when you wake up in the morning,” Smith said.

Aussie Podiatrist Walks 500 Miles to Raise Money After Wife’s Tragic Death
For Marco Mangano, surviving the horrific aftermath of his wife’s suicide came down to two simple things: walking his dog Shadow and finding someone to talk to. The 40-year-old podiatrist from Concord, who lost wife Jacqui in 2011 after she fought a long battle with mental illness, found himself desperately struggling to deal with the loss of a loved one without the consoling assistance of family and friends to ease his grief.

Marco Mangano and his dog |
On the advice of Lifeline, Mangano started to exercise, walking his dog for some fresh air and to clear his head. Last year, he decided to go one step further and began planning a walking trip from Sydney to Queensland to raise funds for Lifeline. He started his epic trek last September walking 897km (550 miles) in 30 days — raising $20,000 for Lifeline in the process.

ACFAP NEWS |
ACFAP to Hold its 2nd Annual Conference in 2016 at Yosemite National Park
Dr. Louis J. DeCaro, president of the American College of Foot & Ankle Pediatrics (ACFAP) has announced its second Annual ACFAP conference. The conference will take place at Yosemite National Park on April 9, 2016. This CME event will feature leading authorities on pediatric foot and ankle conditions including Drs. Volpe, Valmassy, Silvani, Scherer, Goad, Deheer, and many more! It will cover topics ranging from pediatric flatfoot, equinus, sports medicine, surgery, pathology, and practice management.
|
Dr. Louis DeCaro |
DeCaro says, “The planning of this conference comes off the heels of a successful first meeting this year at Barry University in Miami, FL where almost 100 doctors attended. For the 2016 conference, we chose Yosemite not only because of its sheer beauty as a national park, but also to increase the exposure of ACFAP to our West Coast podiatric physicians.” The meeting will be preceded again by a one-day national park excursion on April 8th.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
10 Apps Physicians Should be Using Now - Part 1
As overwhelming as technology might seem, it can also act as a powerful professional tool. With a smartphone in hand, those working in often-chaotic medical practices can manage responsibilities, organize schedules, interact with patients, and collaborate with other professionals on the go. Many mobile apps have been designed specifically with these tasks in mind, but some are better than others. If you're not sure which apps are best for you to download, here are 10 top picks from professionals in the healthcare industry. Search for them in the iTunes Store or on Google Play.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ICD-10) |
RE: ICD-10 Grace Period (Josh White, DPM, CPed)
From: Jack Ressler, DPM
Josh White DPM wrote a very informative response to my query on the ICD-10 grace period. I'm not sure how other doctors interpret this grace period, but I don't really know what purpose it will serve. If doctors are allowed to submit wrongly coded ICD-10 claims that will not be rejected during a one-year grace period, what steps will CMS take to make this a learning curve? What are doctors going to learn? It seems like it will be another year of delays while the decision-makers try to figure this one out. I still feel the smoke will not settle until after the 2016 election year.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT) - PART 1A |
From: Olga Luepschen, DPM
I recently had to take my dog to a veterinarian. Our local veterinarians said my Corgis' allergies required specialized care. When I called to schedule the appointment, I was required to give my credit card number before booking the appoinment slot. I was informed the consultation would be between $400-600. If I was a no-show, the credit card would be charged $75.
The final charge was approximately $500. This included the oral and topical medications for his severe allergies. I paid this and drove the 2 1/2 hr each way. Needless to say, as soon I returned back to my office, I implemented a $25 no-show fee. I am now considering requesting credit cards prior to booking. Our profession is just as valuable as that of other specialists. Patients need to learn to respect us as well.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT) - PART 1B |
From: George Jacobson, DPM
I was considering requiring a deposit or appointment reservation fee to be refunded or applied to the visit. Dr. Miltchin's method is "cleaner" without having to refund or reverse charges. I guess if the card is no good, we are still back at square one, but maybe it will occur less frequently. I would also have to tell myself that if we didn't write a new name in our appointment book because of this policy, that this was a patient that would not have showed up. Since I keep track of new patients who do not show up, I would be able to compare the effect of the policy on my practice. Practice management seminars should begin advocating this policy and make this the industry standard.
Get patients used to the policy. We had no problem getting patients used to paying their co-pay before treatment. I do not know how to verify that the credit card information is valid prior to entering the charge with our system. We only do this after the card is swiped. Also, can't the "customer" just call the credit card company and claim they didn't agree to the charge, didn't get the service or they didn't authorize the charge? I guess "nothing ventured, nothing gained."
George Jacobson, DPM, Hollywood, FL
