INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS

Sports Need Funding to Encourage Healthy Lifestyle: Aussie Podiatrist

Jayne Arlett, director of the Townsville Podiatry Centre, said it was important that major sporting venues received funding at federal, state, and local government levels because of the value they add to health and well-being of communities. "The obesity epidemic in our region and also nationally and internationally is really quite dramatic and concerning from a medical viewpoint," she said.

"We know that encouraging people to live a healthy lifestyle is a key to reducing and preventing obesity and, from a research perspective, we know that if we can engage young people in a healthy and active lifestyle early on, they'll keep making those choices later in life," said Arlette.

RETIRED PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS

CA Podiatrist Receives Senior Inspiration Award

Dr. Mel Barton, an “Energizer Bunny” with 91 years of experience on this planet, was recently awarded “The Riverside County 2013 Senior Inspiration Award” representing the city of Indian Wells. He and a cherry-picked group of serious volunteers were lauded for their service to the community.

Dr. Mel Barton

After retiring from his full-time career as a podiatrist, Barton moved to Indian Wells in 1990 and has devoted much of his time to helping others. He serves as vice president of the Eisenhower Medical Center Auxiliary’ Collectors Corner. For the past 20 years, he has helped raise money for the hospital. He also works as an usher at the McCallum Theater.

New Brand of Footwear Features Aussie Podiatrist-Developed Orthaheel

Vionic™ is a new brand of footwear, but utilizes tried and tested technology. According to officials, the technology has been life-changing for many due to the effectiveness of the Orthaheel technology.

MEDICARE NEWS

New Rule Aims to Save Money for Diabetics on Medicare

New rules are now in place that could have some diabetics on Medicare searching for new testing suppliers. Diabetics with original Medicare who get their testing supplies through the mail must now use companies with contracts with the federal system. Lorraine Ryan, spokeswoman for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Philadelphia, says it will save money for recipients and taxpayers.

“Rather than paying an approved amount — which prior to July 1st was around $78 for 100 test strips and lancets — Medicare’s new approved amount is about $22,” Ryan said. The change drops co-pays to under $5. She says some people may have to switch suppliers, but you can still walk in and purchase supplies at local Medicare-approved pharmacies.

HEALTHCARE NEWS

Americans are Living Longer, but Not Necessarily Healthier, Study Shows

Americans are living longer than they did two decades ago, but they are losing ground on key measures of health to people in other developed nations, a new study shows. The findings, from the most comprehensive analysis of the health of the U.S. population in more than 15 years, show progress in reducing death rates, adjusted for age, across a variety of diseases. But death rates from illnesses associated with obesity, such as diabetes and kidney disease, as well as neurological conditions like Alzheimer's disease, are on the rise.

Meanwhile, the number of years of living with chronic disability, an indicator of quality of life, rose for the average American in the past 20 years, partly reflecting increased longevity. Despite gains in longevity, Americans are living the extra years "not necessarily in good health," said the researchers, led by Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in Seattle.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)

Query: Compensation for Medical Report

I received a request from an attorney office of a patient that is suing her former employer for injuries. They want me to write a medical report setting forth my opinion of 10 issues they presented in this request. It goes beyond my medical records and seems somewhat tedious and time-consuming. Since I've never been asked to do this, what would be a fair charge for this request?

Name Withheld (GA)

Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. Time is the key. Preparation of reports should be charged on your hourly rate. This varies from location to location and practitioner to practitioner. Generally, rates range from $250-450 per hour.

ACE USA and RPS Healthcare Expand Podiatrist Professional Liability Coverage

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid guidelines and rules resulted in a record number of investigations and enforcement actions in 2011. ACE Medical Risk, a division of ACE USA, has responded through an endorsement that increases limits on Medicare/Medicaid legal expense reimbursements, raising coverage limits from $30,000 to $50,000 per action, with an annual aggregate of $50,000. This product is underwritten by companies within the ACE Group, an A.M. Best “A+” rated carrier, and is offered to podiatrists exclusively by RPS Healthcare, National Program Administrator of the Podiatry PLUS programs and one of the largest wholesalers and the largest Managing General Agent in the country. For more information Call 800-397-9697 ext 2648.

CODINGLINE CORNER

Query: Simple Blister Evacuation Code

Can someone direct me to the proper code to use for a simple blister/vesicle evacuation? The uninfected bullous lesion was 1.5cm x .8cm, and was the result of a friction injury. The lesion was punctured/incised, after the foot was prepped, with a sterile blade without the need for local anesthesia. Approximately 1 cc. of straw colored serous fluid was evacuated. The roof of the blister was left intact. A sterile dressing was applied.

PM News Subscriber

Response: Incision and drainage of seroma is exactly what you did. I think it is perfect to use CPT 10140 - incision and drainage of hematoma, seroma or fluid collection.

There is no better choice unless you feel that it only requires a visit, and the I&D was not significant enough to warrant a procedure.

RE: Educating Employees About HIPAA

I think everyone should be reminded that HIPAA requires that all entities educate their employees about HIPAA. Our method is a yearly meeting where we discuss HIPAA rules. Be sure to have everyone in attendance sign in, as documentation is paramount.

RE: Reliable Billing Company
From: Ilona Barlam, DPM

I highly recommend Billing 101, a company based out of Washington state. eugene@billing101.net They do the best follow-up on denied claims, and consult on proper billing and coding.  They are also operated by a DPM group. We went through 4 different billing companies and never had it that easy.

RE: Inexpensive Cast Cutter (Joseph S Borreggine, DPM)
From: Judd Davis, DPM

I would like to thank Dr. Joseph Borreggine for his posting about the alternative to cast saws available. I bought a Sears Craftsman 2 amp oscillating multi-tool for $80, which works just as well as my defunct $1,000+ medical grade cast saw. The metal/wood/fiberglass blade that comes with the tool works like a charm, and safety appears identical, as it does not cut skin. It's disturbing to me that once a piece of equipment is labeled "medical", the price can be marked up ten-fold or more.

RE: FL Podiatrist Who Took Kickbacks Loses License, but Won't Go to Jail
From: Marc Katz, DPM

Well this is comforting. This doctor won't go to jail! Well maybe he needs to be executed for the horrible crime of taking sports tickets! Or gift cards! Wow, maybe this does deserve "massive collateral consequences"! Okay, I get it and I don't agree with what he did, but I certainly hope that the synthetic skin company will be losing their license.

I think I know the company, but I believe they may still be in business. Did they just get slapped with a fine for their federal crime? Or is it just in vogue to make doctors the horrible villains. We just lay down and keep taking all of the rules and regulations as if we are trying to hurt people and steal their money. All of this while our patients are defrauding the government getting on to disability and Medicaid in record numbers. When will the feds go after the real fraud?
