APMA Members Asked to Vote on Revised Definition of Podiatry
Active APMA members have been e-mailed the following 2024 Referendum Question: Please indicate your approval of revising the definition of podiatric medicine approved through the 1991 referendum as “Podiatric medicine is that profession of the health sciences concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the human foot, ankle, and their governing and related structures, including local manifestations of systemic conditions, by all appropriate systems and means” to now be defined as:
“Podiatric medicine and surgery is the specialty that addresses the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies and conditions of the leg, with special emphasis in the diagnosis and treatment of the foot, ankle and their governing and related structures of the leg by any and all means. Osseous surgical treatment is limited to that part of the leg at or distal to the tibial tubercle.”

AT THE COLLEGES |
A Third-Year TUSPM Podiatry Student's Perspective
Foot and ankle physicians, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), undergo extensive training comparable to other medical professionals. Camellia Russell, a third-year podiatric medical student at Temple University, reflects on her journey toward medical school application. "Recognizing the trust my future patients would place in my care, I chose a rigorous path in podiatric medicine," Russell states. She faced frequent examinations designed to ensure mastery of medical knowledge, enabling accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients.
|
Camellia Russell |
During her application process, Russell was introduced to podiatric medicine by a friend who regularly visited his foot and ankle physician for treatment. His care enabled him to walk comfortably, manage his business, and carry out daily activities. Intrigued by his story, Russell researched podiatric medicine and discovered that becoming a DPM requires four years of medical education, followed by residency and fellowship. The curriculum also includes a significant course load, with a specialization in foot and ankle anatomy and biomechanics.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
10 Things More Important Than Money
In the past few decades, healthcare has focused on money as a metric of practice success. Yes, we can only have a comfortable livelihood with money. Still, some areas of life are far more important than the girth of your investment portfolio or the size of your bank account.
5. Know thy neighbor. Robert Frost said, "Good walls make good neighbors." However, your neighbors can be a source of friendship, happiness, and comfort. Please don't write off your neighbors because they aren't the same age, ethnicity, or at the same rung on the social ladder as you. Part of our connection with the world comes from where we live. Our neighbors are an essential piece of that connection. You never know when you might need to borrow a cup of sugar!

QUERIES (CODING & BILLING) |
Our providers are wondering if the new Palmetto Medicare ruling regarding routine foot care and non-MDs also will affect podiatry? What information do you have on this?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA NEWS) - PART 1A |
From: Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM
I read the APMA’s new proposed referendum defining "podiatrist", with a little bit of concern. I am sure the purpose was to increase our scope of practice. However, eliminating the phrase, “local manifestations of systemic disease” actually limits our practice.
I frequently prescribe medications for gout, and diabetic neuropathy. According to the new definition, I would be operating outside of my defined role as podiatrist. I suggest a return of this phraseology to the definition.
Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM, South Bend, IN

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA NEWS) - PART 1B |
From: Brian Kiel, DPM
I just received a request to vote to change the definition of podiatry. Why is the treatment of the leg added to our definition. Exactly how many states allow us to treat, much less operate on, the leg. It is my understanding that there are states that still don’t allow surgical treatment of the ankle. Whose idea was this and what is its purpose? If the purpose is to elevate our status to “MD”, adding the word leg sure is not going to do it. I vote no!!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (INTERNET SECURITY) |
From: Howard E Friedman, DPM
The issue of password security is really one of overall cybersecurity which every office as well as every individual needs to take seriously. Cybersecurity for healthcare is a focused topic of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), a federal agency under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security which does have online resources for the healthcare sector (see below).
I believe that cybersecurity for healthcare should be a topic addressed in continuing education seminars. The recommendation for strong passwords is on target. Passwords should be lengthy, complex (including letters, upper and lower case, numbers and symbols), and changed often. Password managers are designed to keep track of these passwords.
Cybersecurity also includes training staff to avoid phishing emails which are pervasive and to...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (SCOPE OF PRACTICE) |
From: Steven Kravitz, DPM
The ability for podiatrists to treat systemic disease affecting the lower extremity, especially the leg and foot is generally accepted in the medical community based on our current level of training. The question pertains more to the point of the amount of systemic treatment required by the specific case.
Generally speaking, good quality practice requires podiatrists to have good general knowledge of systemic disease affecting the lower extremity. This does not mean that we have to independently treat these conditions. I generally referred neuropathy, vascular disease, and similar cases to appropriate specialists, and generally, cases requiring relatively simple treatment such as various medication, etc. were referred back to me to monitor and follow up. Podiatrists, as all practicing physicians, are not necessarily required to fully treat everything...
