IL Podiatrist and Nurse Fiancée Use CPR to Save Man's Life

A local off-duty nurse and her podiatrist fiancee's quick thinking saved a Midlothian boy's life Sunday night, reports CBS News. Nick Theilgaard, 16, was dining outdoors at Houlihan's restaurant in Orland Park when his rare heart condition caused his heart and lungs to stop working. A witness ran into the restaurant and shouted for help. That's when Sarah Kane, a pediatric cardiac nurse practitioner at Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, and her podiatrist fiancé Dr. Brian Wittmayer sprung into action.

The two ran out and began performing CPR on Thielgaard. They then continued for 10 minutes until paramedics arrived with a defibrillator and resuscitated Thielgaard.

PODIATRUIC LEGENDS IN THE NEWS

NY Podiatrist and Biomechanics Icon Offers Sage Advice

Few names in the world of podiatry and biomechanics are as well known as Justin Wernick, DPM. His career as a practitioner, innovator, lab owner, and international academic lecturer spans more than five decades. While he no longer actively practices, Wernick says he passionately believes in the value and significance of foot care. “By caring for feet you can genuinely change people’s lives. Foot health directly affects quality of life.”

Drs. Justin and Elissa Wernick (daughter)

For those interested in providing foot care, his advice is simple, “Find an area of expertise, develop yourself, and market it. There are well over 300 million Americans…600 million feet! There is plenty of potential and opportunity to find a niche. But you must be able to demonstrate your value.” Wernick’s long career and his dedication to his profession demonstrate the lesson he says he learned in childhood, “No one is going to do it for you.”

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR

Lack of Support from Flip-Flops Causes Domino Effect: NY Podiatrist

This summer staple might be a real health flop. Aside from the obvious lack of protection (meaning you're more vulnerable to dropped objects, stubbed toes, and the like), your favorite pair could be seriously damaging your feet. "The feet are the foundation of your whole body. This is the base of the skeleton," says Dr. Jackie Sutera, a podiatrist in New York City. "It's a domino effect... the rest of your joints and bones have to compensate.”

Dr. Jacqueline Sutera

Like anything else, moderation is key: Slipping flip-flops on by the pool or for a short jaunt likely won't cause any harm — the problems arise when your thongs become your go-to summer shoes.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW

FL Podiatrist Who Took Kickbacks Loses License, but Won't Go to Jail

A Pasco County foot doctor who accepted kickbacks from a medical supply company now is faced with the end of his medical career in the United States. Dr. Nimesh Patel was adored by his patients, as demonstrated in dozens of notes presented to a federal judge. Defense attorney Scott Flint told U.S. District Judge Mary Scriven today that the felony conviction means Patel will lose his medical license, something Flint described as "massive collateral consequences" for his conduct.

In February, Patel pleaded guilty to accepting $8,000 worth of kickbacks from a company that makes synthetic skin used to treat foot ulcers. According to his plea agreement, Patel accepted gift cards or cash and tickets to sports events in return for his continued use of the company's products. Because those products were used to treat Medicare patients, the kickbacks were a federal crime.

MEDICARE NEWS

CMS Proposes New Fee for Chronic Care Management

In a nod toward primary care, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed paying physicians a new fee — beginning in 2015 — for managing Medicare patients with 2 or more chronic conditions apart from face-to-face office visits. Right now, the details are sketchy: CMS has yet to set the amount of the fee, and the agency is asking the medical profession to help it develop standards for earning the extra cash.

These loose ends notwithstanding, some physicians may find they will not qualify for the new management fee. "Potential standards," according to CMS, include the use of a certified electronic health record system, employment of at least a single nurse practitioner or physician assistant, and status as a medical home. Offering "complex chronic care management services" on a 24/7 basis is a "required capability."

Report Finds Telehealth Services are Cost-Effective, Clinically Successful

Studies of healthcare systems in the U.S. and abroad show providers have achieved financial and clinical success with implementing telehealth services, according to a report by the healthcare research arm of Computer Sciences Corp.  The four-page report, by the Falls Church, VA-based defense, intelligence, and information technology consulting firm's Global Institute for Emerging Healthcare Practices, reviews telehealth studies in Germany, the U.K., as well as the U.S.

While there remain problems with properly quantifying the return on investment in telehealth programs, “the evidence shows that, implemented properly, telehealth can be cost-effective, with benefits accruing across the whole healthcare system, not just acute care providers,” the report authors said.

Query: DVT Protocol

Our multispecialty outpatient surgery center is developing a more formal protocol for the peri-operative prevention of DVTs. What are the standard DVT protocols that are in other places for outpatient facilities? Does your facility dictate the form of prophylaxis?

RE: Reliable Medical Billing Company
From: Bessaliea Griffin, DPM

I am using American Healthcare Billing Services in Dallas, TX. They do an excellent job. One of the great things about the company is that it is operated by a licensed podiatrist. I am a new solo practitioner; therefore their knowledge and experience have been extremely helpful with proper billing and coding.

RE: Reliable Medical Billing Company
From: Steven Gershman, DPM

I have used MedBill Resources for about 15 years. They do all types of medical billing but are especially good with podiatry, including DME. They handle every aspect of the receivables and any insurance company denials. Outsourcing billing to them was my best decision. Contact Pat Roy at 207 786 8816.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE:Yukon Sourtoe Cocktail Ingredients: Any Drink, Amputated Toe

The story of the Sourtoe begins with Captain Dick. A former cowboy, truck driver, and professional wolf poisoner, Dick Stevenson was poking around a cabin on the outskirts of Dawson City, Yukon in 1973 when he found a jar. Inside, preserved in alcohol, was a human toe. Known for his madcap schemes—he boasts of having organized "the first nude beauty contest north of the 60th parallel”—the Captain wondered how he could best make use of the toe. Then, after several drinks, it hit him: cocktail garnish.

Certificate for drinking sourtoe cocktail

The Sourtoe, served every night at the Downtown Hotel since 1973, is Stevenson's enduring creation. Originally it adhered to a strict two-ingredient recipe: champagne plus pickled toe. Over the years, however, the Sourtoe rules have relaxed. Any liquid, alcoholic or otherwise, may now be used, but drinkers must abide by the official chant: "Drink it fast or drink it slow, but the lips have got to touch the toe." Those who accomplish the wince-inducing task receive a certificate of membership in the Sourtoe Cocktail Club.
