AT THE COLLEGES - PART 1
NY Podiatrist Becomes NYCPM’s First Modern Fellow in Orthopedics

At The New York College of Podiatric Medicine's (NYCPM) graduation in May, instructor Samantha Landau, DPM, MPH received a certificate marking her completion of “Post-Graduate Fellowship Training in Biomechanics and Gait-Related Disorders of the Lower Extremity in Children and Adults,” and became “the first of what we hope will be many future Fellows in Orthopedics,” according to Joseph C. D’Amico, DPM, DSc, Professor and Former Chair of the Division of Orthopedics/Pediatrics at NYCPM. The purpose of the program, said Dr. D’Amico, is to provide specialized training in biomechanics to allow Dr. Landau to function as a “liaison bridging the gap between surgery and biomechanics.”

(L-R) Drs. Loretta Logan and Samantha Landau

Dr. Landau’s training included rotations through the gait laboratory at HSS with Howard Hillstrom, PhD; at NYCPM via the Richard O. Schuster Gait Laboratory under the direction of Jeffrey Cusack, DPM and clinical sessions and training supervised by Barbara Resseque, DPM and Russell G. Volpe, DPM in pediatrics. Dr. Landau joined the Orthopedics/Pediatrics Department, chaired by Loretta Logan, DPM as a full-time clinical instructor on July 1, 2022.

DC Podiatrist Reveals Perils of Giving Medical Advice to Friends and Family

Stephen Pribut, DPM, a sports medicine podiatrist based in Washington, DC, has had many friends or family members ask him for medical advice. It's a scenario every doctor will face at one point or another in their careers, and it’s never an easy one. He admits some situations are challenging. “I had a relative asking about a third party with an ankle injury. I advised he hold off on using a balance board until things healed, and to make sure he went to see a specialist. Unfortunately, he went to his general practitioner who likely knows nothing about ankle anatomy,” says Dr. Pribut.

Dr. Stephen Pribut

“I finally saw a photo which revealed swelling higher up on the ankle and no evidence of a hematoma — much lower than we would see in an ankle ligament injury. I would like him to see a sports podiatrist or foot and ankle orthopedist, but now I have to stay calm when the advice isn’t followed,” he says.

NY Lacrosse Legend Returns to Open Practice in Hometown

A South Side High School lacrosse legend has returned to her hometown to practice medicine. Liz Piselli, DPM opened her first podiatry practice at her new suite in Rockville Centre, NY in April. At South Side, Piselli was a three-time letter winner in lacrosse and a four-time letter-winner in track, but most notably she amassed 76 goals in each of her junior and senior years with the Cyclones. Her impressive offensive output allowed her the opportunity to play for the U-19 United States National Team.

Dr. Liz Piselli

The torrid scorer also continued her athletic career at Stanford University from 2004 to 2007, where she had a high point in her junior year, putting up 28 goals and 13 assists on route to the school’s first NCAA tournament appearance. Dr. Piselli started her podiatric career in 2012 in the Montefiore Health System.

MEDICARE/MEDICAID NEWS
Feds Recovered $5B from Healthcare Fraud Cases in 2021

The Justice Department's (JD) efforts returned almost $1.9 billion to the federal government or paid it out to private individuals. Of that money, about $1.2 billion went to the Medicare trust fund. About $98.7 million in federal Medicaid money was transferred to CMS. The JD opened 831 criminal healthcare fraud cases last year. Federal prosecutors filed criminal charges in 462 cases involving 741 defendants. A total of 312 defendants were convicted of healthcare fraud during the year. The JD opened 805 civil healthcare fraud investigations and had 1,432 civil healthcare fraud matters pending at the end of last year.

HHS Office of the Inspector General (OIG) investigations resulted in 504 criminal actions against individuals or entities accused of Medicare- and Medicaid-related crimes. The OIG filed 669 civil actions, which included false claims and unjust-enrichment lawsuits filed in federal district courts, and civil monetary penalties. The OIG excluded 1,689 individuals and entities from participating in federal healthcare programs, including Medicare and Medicaid.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Cryptocurrency Investing Rules for Busy Doctors

Cryptocurrencies can be complicated. As a busy medical professional, you likely do not have time to research tokens or the nuances of this specific asset class. As you invest, how will you know whether you are doing the right thing? As prices zoom up and down, it feels like you should do something in response to market movements, but what exactly?

5. Start early

If you believe that cryptocurrency will be valuable over the long-term, you benefit by getting started sooner rather than later. The best way to take advantage of the next wave of excitement is to invest today.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Joan Oloff, DPM

The recent posts regarding metatarsal stress fractures and Under Armour shoes: Shoe contracts for collegiate and professional athletes are a perennial problem we see. This is equally true for the individual athlete as it is for team sports. Martina Hingis was a professional tennis player who famously sued Fila for her ankle issues. For some professional athletes, corporations will create individual lasts and create truly personalized versions of their mass produced footwear. I am not aware of that being done at the collegiate level, however.

We are able to create solutions for most athletes with the use of custom orthotics. For the collegiate athlete, that is all we can really do. I was once called to watch a collegiate women’s tennis match. The player kept complaining to her coach that she didn’t like the K- Swiss shoes the team was contracted to play in. For her, they were just a bit heavier than the Adidas shoes she played with as a junior. Orthotics won’t really solve that issue.

The world of collegiate and/or professional sports doesn’t always protect the athlete who is utilized to build the brand. I believe our knowledge and experience provide the best work around solutions available to them, however.

From: Dave Mullens, DPM, JD

Mel Barton is a remarkable person everyone admires. He single-handedly saved and preserved the California podiatry student scholarship fund, the California Foundation for Excellence in Podiatric Medicine (CaFFE). And he kept track of the CaFFE contributions, investments, and expenses for 20+ years just because it was the right thing to do. It is a legacy he should be very proud of. In addition, Mel is the kind of guy anyone would want to hang out with - down to earth, funny, self-deprecating, hardworking, and kind. I just wish our specialty had more Mel Bartons. Mel, happy birthday!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER)
From: Judd Davis, DPM

A former employee of mine moved here from the Washington, DC area, where she had worked for another podiatrist for some years. The first time we scheduled a matrixectomy, she said, "What is that, I've never seen it." I was astounded. The DPM she had worked for in DC had the same patients come back every 6 months for repeat nail avulsions, for years on end! Either that podiatrist was never trained in the art of a matrixectomy procedure, or decided to pad their pockets at the expense and agony of those patients. The 11730 code has been hugely overbilled and utilized, in many instances for simple nail trimmings, leading to the crackdown on this code.
