DMU and Central College Announce Health Science Pathways
Central College and Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences have announced a comprehensive partnership designed to expand pathways for Central students who wish to pursue graduate-level health sciences programs. The collaboration supports student success while helping strengthen Iowa’s healthcare workforce.
Beginning in July 2026, Central students who meet academic benchmarks will be eligible to apply for one reserved seat annually in the following DMU programs: Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, Doctor of Occupational Therapy, and Doctor of Physical Therapy. The partnership also introduces accelerated pathway options. Central undergraduate students and DMU OTD students may participate in a 3+3 program, allowing them to earn both undergraduate and graduate credit concurrently.

Hyperbaric Therapy Effective in Reducing Wound Size: TX Podiatrist
Coryell Health Advanced Wound Center is home to a hyperbaric chamber used to circulate oxygen as a treatment for chronic diseases and wound healing. One of the most common chronic diseases treated at the facility is diabetes. Vanessa English, DPM, a podiatric physician at Coryell Health, said 1 in 8 people have diabetes and 1 in 4 of those people are unaware of their diagnosis.
|
|
Dr. Vanessa English |
Dr. English said, “We probably know someone in our lives with diabetes or chronic kidney disease; those are really common in public; everyone probably has a family member, a grandmother or grandfather and we see all of those in here, in conjunction with dialysis.” English said patients typically see a 29 percent decrease in wound size after five sessions of hyperbaric therapy.

| LIFE AFTER PODIATRY | |
FL Podiatrist Transitions From the O.R. to the Broadcast Booth
At Major Pickelball League events, the grandstand announcer’s chair usually belongs to a familiar figure: a broadcaster, perhaps a retired pro, or someone whose job is to keep the crowd engaged between points. Bret Ribotsky, DPM did not arrive at the broadcast table by the usual route. The accomplished leader in medicine and surgery arrived by way of a shattered body, a wife he lost to cancer, and a pickleball court on a cruise ship somewhere in the North Atlantic.
|
|
Dr. Bret Ribotsky |
Understanding how he ended up narrating professional pickleball with the eye of a surgeon requires going back to before pickleball was part of his life at all. "Dr. Bret" was an accomplished podiatric surgeon. Then just like that, on May 20, 2015, life changed. He was aboard a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary patrol boat north of Fort Lauderdale when the boat’s driver crashed into a jetty. He broke bones in both feet, both ankles, his knee, his hip, and three vertebrae in his lower back, herniated discs in his neck, and suffered a serious concussion.

Policy Changes Your Practice Needs to Prepare for
MGMA's government affairs team on what’s already changed in 2026 and what’s still to come.
7. Medicaid work requirements take effect in 2027.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act reshaped Medicaid, with the largest changes phase in from 2027 through 2029. Work requirements for certain populations in expansion states come first, and an interim final rule is already out.
For your front office, this is not an abstract concept. Eligibility churn means more coverage verification at check-in, more patients moving between Medicaid and self-pay, and a real risk of rising uncompensated care. The law also touches state-directed payments and provider taxes, which can pressure the Medicaid rates you actually collect, and the size of the effect will vary widely by state. The midterm elections could change the trajectory, but the responsible move is to model lower Medicaid revenue and a heavier verification workload now and to brief your registration staff before the rules take hold.

| FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY | |
7 Money Behaviors That Can Hold Back Financial Success
Here are seven common behavioral traps that can undermine your financial success — and what to do instead.
2. Acknowledge emotions instead of ignoring them
"Just be rational" sounds great until you're staring at a surprise bill or a plunging chart. Emotions that we refuse to notice tend to sneak into our choices anyway. Behavioral and clinical studies consistently show that stress and emotions can lead to biased judgment and risk preferences.
A more effective approach is to label what's happening ("I'm anxious about cash flow," "I'm feeling FOMO about that stock") and give yourself a short timeout before acting. That simple "name it to tame it" move makes room for a better choice like checking your plan, comparing options, or deciding to do nothing for now.
Consider keeping a 30-second money journal entry whenever you make a meaningful decision: date, context, emotion, decision, and why.

| SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM | |
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
3. The room you put patients in matters
Not all hospital rooms are created equal. A patient who is sundowning or struggles at night will not do well in a dark corner room with no external cues. The better option? A room with a big window that lets in daylight, gets dark at night, and ideally has a view of the nurses’ station. It’s safer, grounding, and a gentle reminder that the patient is in the hospital—not lost in a timeless, dimly lit void.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CATEGORIZATION OF PODIATRIC MEDICINE) | |
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
And you want to know why there is a recruitment problem? Why people do not know what a DPM is? What they do?
Allopathic medicine? Of course we practice allopathic medicine. It is a Strawman argument to suggest that only an MD can practice allopathic medicine. By the way, don’t raise that Motte-and-Baily question to the DO who must complete a mandatory course in osteopathic manipulation technique. There are multiple DOs I know who practice osteopathic manipulation techniques.
Maybe, just maybe, if YOU did not engage in the self-deprecation and devaluation of your DPM degree, and concentrated instead on demonstrating a level of clinical, academic, and ethical excellence associated with the DPM degree, some of the issues debated in PM News would be resolved without the constant use of equivocation or red herrings.
When you begin a discussion by stating, "When I graduated medical school,” you assert a foundational, “I am ashamed that I graduated a podiatric medical college or college of podiatry." It is a form of deception, self-deception as well as self-deprecation. If you do not respect yourself, why do you expect others to respect you. Otherwise, sing a chorus of Masquerade from Phantom, because that is what you are doing.
Allen M. Jacobs, DPM, St. Louis, MO
