PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
NJ Podiatrist Discusses Partial Matrixectomy for Hereditary Ingrown Toenails
Cutting toenails too short or too rounded can create a jagged shard of nail. This shard can dig into skin as the nail grows. “When you’re bending over to trim your nails instead of someone trimming for you, sometimes you don’t notice you’re missing a shard of nail on the corner,” says Joshua Hollinger, DPM, a podiatrist at Rothman Orthopaedics. In other cases, heredity is to blame. “I’ve seen whole families with ingrown toenails,” Hollinger says.
|
Dr. Joshua Hollinger |
In addition, individuals with bunions frequently have ingrown toenails, because as the big toe angles toward the second toe, it applies more pressure to the inside border of the nail. People with flat feet, fungal nails and dystrophic – or thickened – nails are also predisposed. If heredity is causing your issues, that’s trickier. Some people opt for a partial matrixectomy, where a doctor removes a small side portion of the nail and applies a chemical to the nail root to prevent it from growing back. This typically takes two to three weeks to heal, Dr. Hollinger says.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Stop Guessing, Start Profiting
Unlock hidden insights in your practice's data to boost revenue, streamline operations, and enhance patient care with simple, effective strategies.
5. Optimize your payer mix.
Compare average reimbursement per CPT group by insurer. Shifting even two percentage points from your lowest payer to a higher one can lift revenue without adding visits. A recent survey details how practices are “prioritizing payer re-negotiations.”

WRITING TIPS FROM THE AMERICAN PODIATRIC MEDICAL WRITERS ASSOCIATION |
Ten Common Writing Mistakes Your Spell Checker Won’t Find - Part 3
5. It’s is the contraction for “it is,” never “it has.” That’s all. Its is the possessive of “it.”
6. When you’re talking about yourself and someone else, be careful to use I and me correctly. The best way to know which one to use is to eliminate the other person from the sentence and see what you’ve got left. Example: "He gave the report to (Robert and) me."

QUERIES (CME PROGRAMS) |
Query: New CPME CME Rule
I am a podiatrist in Ohio. It is my understanding the State Medical Board now has a new rule where only the amount spent on a CME is the credit given. For instance, if a physician watches a video for CME, but the video is only 57 minutes long and not one hour, a full credit will not be awarded and only a credit equaling the 57 minutes is given. How will this affect the Podiatry Management CME credits?
Rosella Gabriele, DPM, Cleveland, OH
Editor’s Response: This new CPME rule, which took effect on July 1, 2025 does not affect Podiatry Management’s instructional media CPME-Approved CME program. It only affects programs that use a lecturer, either live or online. PM’s CMEs are each 1.5 credit hours as certified by a psychometrician.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM, Paul Kesselman, DPM
I am saddened by Dr. Shavelson's death. He helped so many students learn about our fine podiatry profession.
Daniel Chaskin, DPM
I am quite saddened to hear about the passing of Dennis Shavelson both as a friend from yesteryear and a mentor. Back in the late seventies and early 1980s, as everyone knows, there were way more graduates of podiatry school than there were residency programs. Dennis opened his office to a surgical/biomechanical preceptorship through NYCPM. This enabled many students who did not match but nevertheless were in the top of their class to receive post-graduate training of one- or two-years duration. His program prepared many who eventually either went on to match in residency programs, or prepared them to thrive in private or institutional practice. Due to his diligent teaching and the caseloads preceptors handled, most of his students were taught the skills needed to eventually log sufficient cases, enabling them to receive surgical or orthopedic board certification.
In 1981, he had two practices in the South Bronx which catered primarily to the...
