PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS

Diet is Major Cause of Diabetes Pandemic: FL Podiatrist

According to Dr. Christopher Blanco, podiatrist of Baptist Hospital in Florida, they see quite a number of patients from Grand Bahama, admitting that many of them have had to have amputations. The physician who attended a recent Caribbean conference on diabetes said that the interest in this subject brought out a huge number of persons, including diabetic patients.

Dr. Christopher Blanco

He noted that diabetes is becoming a pandemic, and the main cause discussed is diet. He said further that for people in the Caribbean, the food tends to be high in saturated fat and glucose. Blanco also said that talking with your primary healthcare doctor about diet can help a lot in prevention, and that diet can also help those patients already diagnosed with the disease.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters.

Bret Ribotsky:     How has podiatric education changed since you graduated?

Dr. Terry Spilken

Terry Spilken:  I have always wanted a unified education. With 2015 going on, we've seen the competencies developed between all nine schools on a consistent level. I think that the one thing podiatry lacked when I was starting out was consistency. You could go to one school and get an education and go to another school and get an education about something else. The Council on Podiatric Medical Education deserves a lot of credit. There’s tremendous consistency now.

Dr. Laurence Rubin

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guest is podiatric surgeon and inventor Dr. Laurence Rubin. You can register for future events by clicking here

QUERIES (CLINCAL)

Query: Pulse Oximeter for Pedal Digits?

Does anyone have any experience with using a pulse oximeter on pedal digits? Does this simply measure the O2 saturation the same as a finger measurement, or will it tell me anything about blood supply to the pedal digit?

RE: Nurse Practitioners Modernization Act (Robert Bijak, DPM)
From: George F. Jacobson, DPM

Nurses are the engines of many practices.  We are now beginning to receive back copies of "The Note" and "Statement of Certifying Physician" for the diabetic therapeutic shoe program, signed by the nurse practitioner or PA. Under the physicians' signature line, I am going to add "MD or DO only, per government regulations." This is just another item to be modernized but, as we have learned, any alteration to this program is difficult.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP)

RE: Different Pulses for Different Nurses (Paul Busman, DPM, RN)
From: Robert Bijak, DPM

Dr. Busman's story is humorous, but the "older" nurse may have actually been providing a higher level of care than he realizes! It is not unusual, and perhaps desireable, to indicate if the PULSE is regular or irregular. The quantitative number alone does not necessarily indicate that. The number actualy shows the RATE, not quality, if you will. A person can have a pulse of say 70, and be regular, or 70 and be irregular. Dr. Busman didn't say if his wife had an ECG monitor also, in which case, taking a manual pulse may have been redundant.
