Infection Danger Lurks in Guadalupe River Floodwaters: TX Podiatrist

Emergency workers searching for victims of the Fourth of July flooding along the Guadalupe River are themselves at risk of injury, according to medical experts. Floodwaters contain the bacteria aeromonas, which is not responsive to common antibiotics, warned Lee C. Rogers, DPM, chief of podiatry at UT Health San Antonio. These can lead to infections to the lower extremities from cuts and puncture wounds caused by debris and other sharp objects in turbid floodwaters.

Dr. Lee Rogers

"There's always some bacteria in standing and running fresh water," Dr. Rogers said. "But in a flood situation, runoff washes animal and perhaps human feces into the water. This increases infection risk that can last for weeks, so even those who will be doing river cleanup in the coming days need to take precautions. "Such bacterial infections typically appear three to five days after a flood disaster."

MI Podiatrist Discusses Mueller-Weiss Syndrome

According to Conway McLean, DPM, "The world is full of medical oddities, conditions which defy our understanding. One of them certainly is Mueller-Weiss syndrome (MWS) and the collapsing foot deformity associated. Two physicians wrote about this condition, in which the navicular bone becomes misshapen, but in a particular fashion. The navicular is the bone at the top of the arch, considered the keystone, on the inner side of the foot. In Mueller-Weiss, the navicular bone softens and then flattens. But only one part of it."

Dr. Conway McLean

"The consequence is a gradual collapse of the arch without the rolling effect seen most commonly found with a progressive collapsing foot type (PCFD). The altered foot alignment which develops in MWS often leads to symptoms as some vital structure involved in stance and gait becomes stressed. It may affect tendons or ligaments, joints or muscles, but when foot alignment changes, an individual’s biomechanics will be disturbed. The most striking feature of Mueller-Weiss is probably the unusual flatfoot deformity which can accompany the disease," says Dr. McLean.

PODIATRIC FELLOWS IN THE NEWS
IL Podiatrist Earns National Recognitions for Ankle Arthroplasty Study

Hector Santiago, DPM, a current fellow at the Weil Foot & Ankle Institute (WFAI), was awarded 3rd place for his manuscript titled “Does Surgeon Type Affect Total Ankle Arthroplasty Survivorship in the US?” at the 2025 American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) Annual Scientific Conference held earlier this year in Phoenix, Arizona. Additionally, this research was awarded 1st place in the Student Poster Competition at the Kaiser Permanente National Podiatric Surgical Conference, in Oakland, CA, with primary presenter Khushi Patel, a third year student at the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Hector Santiago

Dr. Santiago’s study investigates the survivorship of Total Ankle Arthroplasty (TAA) across different types of surgeons, representing the largest sample size studied to date on this topic. The findings challenge common perceptions about surgical outcomes based on specialty, offering a data-driven look at the real-world success rates of this complex reconstructive procedure.

IL Podiatrist to be Inducted into High School Hall of Fame

For Beau Shay, DPM, growing up, the templates for athletic success sat right across the dinner table. He was the kid brother to older siblings Jason and Zach, both of whom starred at Galesburg High School and went on to play Division I sports. Not to be outdone, after a successful high school career that included a trip to the 1998 Class 2A state basketball championship game, Beau went on to walk on at Clemson. He didn’t play much – just 20 games over four seasons – but said it was an experience “I wouldn’t trade for anything.”

Dr. Beau Shay

He likely won’t trade the experience of Nov. 29, either. That’s the night Shay and six others will be inducted into the Galesburg Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025. He will join his brothers in the hall. “Growing up and going to Galesburg, you just couldn’t have asked for more as a student, as an athlete,” said Beau, who is now a podiatrist in the Quad Cities.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
New Study Projects 360 Million Cases of Peripheral Artery Disease by 2050

A landmark global study published in Research projects a 220% increase in peripheral artery disease (PAD) cases worldwide by 2050, with prevalence expected to rise from 113 million in 2021 to more than 360 million. The study, led by the “Flow and Toe” Research Team (FORT), represents the most comprehensive population-based forecast of PAD to date, incorporating dynamic interactions among metabolic risks, demographic shifts, and socioeconomic indicators across 204 countries and territories.

“This is a call to action,” said Dr. David G. Armstrong, co-author and Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Neurological Surgery at the University of Southern California. “PAD is the tip of a much larger metabolic iceberg. If we act decisively, we can not only prevent disease but reduce amputations and deaths. This study gives us a roadmap—and a responsibility—to do so.”

WRITING TIPS FROM THE AMERICAN PODIATRIC MEDICAL WRITERS ASSOCIATION
Ten Common Writing Mistakes Your Spell Checker Won’t Find - Part 2

3. "They’re" is the contraction of "they are". "Their" is the possessive – things that belong to them or that they have. There answers the question "where?"

4. "Who’s" is the contraction for “who is.” That’s all. "Whose" is the possessive of "who."
