PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Amputation Patients Often Suffer Financial Ills: PA Podiatrist
As America’s epidemic of obesity continues, Type 2 diabetes has become so common that it’s easy to forget how serious a disease it is. When habits don’t change, when blood sugar control is spotty, when patients have had diabetes for many years, diabetes can lead to heart attacks and strokes, kidney disease and blindness. But even for people who have witnessed its ravages in family members, there’s something about an amputation that really brings home how insidiously destructive diabetes is.
|
Dr. Jane Pontious |
Doctors said amputation patients need better education and more care, but the complexity of their lives often gets in the way. Jane Pontious, DPM, a podiatrist and professor at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, said some of her patients struggle with paying bills, buying food, or finding a place to live. Some have addictions. "They're trying to survive," she said. "Sometimes they don't get here right away." Sometimes, she said, she doesn't see them until "they get blood on their socks, they smell something, or they don't feel good. That's very common."

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS |
OH Podiatrist Visits Texas-Mexico Border
Congressman Brad Wenstrup traveled to the Texas-Mexico border last week to visit a migrant center in the Rio Grande Valley. The Cincinnati Republican, a podiatrist and Army medic, made the trip with the GOP's doctors caucus to see how migrants are being treated.

Dr. Brad Wenstrup |
In an interview with WLWT-TV, Dr. Wenstrup said: "The saddest thing I saw was six children sitting on a carpet, clean, well-dressed because they all get new clothes, playing with toys, and we were told they were unaccompanied children that were either stolen or bought to come across the border to pose as a family."

OUTSIDE INTERESTS |
WI Podiatrist Crafts Fine Furniture in Post Career
Madison’s Alan Kalker, DPM, has a wide, interesting career that brought him to his new artistic profession. Dr. Kalker retired from a career as a podiatrist with a goal: Devote more time to woodworking. He took his goal several steps further, by studying woodworking at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, an experience he said that greatly enhanced his passion for the art and his skills.

Dr. Alan Kalker and Music Stand |
Two years ago, he joined Art Fair on the Square as a new artist in the fair’s Emerge block. The experience, he said, prepared him for the high traffic on the main square at the art fair in the following year. He returns to the Square this summer, showcasing his fine furniture and also selling smaller household items, including salt-and-pepper shakers and coasters made of exotic woods.

RE: The Passing of Michael Keith H.K. Lee, DPM

Dr. Michael Lee |
Michael Keith H.K. Lee, DPM, 74, transitioned on May 15, 2019 at his home in Dixon, Missouri. He was a graduate of the California College of Podiatric Medicine. Michael was the first of a very few podiatrists in the Hawaiian islands in the early '70s and became very popular. He was very compassionate with all of his patients and even made house calls! He had close to 44 years of practice with clinics all over the island.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: Less Strict Criteria for ABFAS Board Certification
From: John Moglia, DPM
I believe the ABFAS criteria for certification is too restrictive. I was certified over 20 years ago with less restrictive criteria and would not qualify today. There should be a compromise in criteria with no compromise in quality. Why not follow our American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS) colleagues’ path to certification with no specific case requirement? Our leaders must resolve this issue for the survival of the profession as certification is now mandatory for hospital and insurance participation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
From: Richard M. Maleski, DPM
Dr. Udell's post reminded me of an incident about 4 or 5 years ago at our community hospital. The wound care nurse at the hospital, who also worked part-time for a home nursing service, apparently took some training course for routine foot care and started advertising, with the hospital's blessing, her availability for nail care and corn/callus care. My understanding was that she could not bill any insurance, cash only.
I became familiar with her since I worked closely with her on some wound cases, and therefore felt comfortable talking to her about her new "business". She told me that she stopped after a few patients because she didn't realize how difficult it was to adequately provide...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) |
From: Bryan C. Markinson, DPM
A PM News subscriber asks if a patient who has had a pancreas/kidney transplant and is no longer diabetic still qualifies for diabetic footwear coverage, being that the patient still has the sequelae of diabetes, and but for the surgery that put the diabetes in remission, would be fully qualified.
Dr. Lehrman prefaces his answer, which is "no" with the words, "in my opinion." That indicates to me that he may not be absolutely sure. In a few rare instances in my practice life, I have appealed to Medicare to "stretch" leniency in their directives in certain circumstances with success. In one case, I was able to...
