Plantar Fasciitis in Summer Often Caused by Wearing Flip-Flops: MA Podiatrist
It’s summertime and the living can be hard on your feet! From blisters to fungal infections and problems related to diabetes, there are a number of issues that can plague our feet year-round and a few that go hand-in-hand with the summer months. According to Rachel Hutchins, DPM with Whittier Street Health Center, summertime brings a surge in cases of plantar fasciitis, one of the most common causes of heel pain. This foot problem is often associated with wearing flip-flops or flat shoes – the footwear of choice for many during warm weather months.

“There’s no support for the arch so it has to do more work,” said Dr. Hutchins, noting that plantar fasciitis usually causes stabbing pain that typically strikes with a person’s first steps in the morning, normally decreases once walking, but can return after extended periods of standing or after sitting.

IL Podiatrist Discusses Ingrown Toenails
Is your toe sore to the touch? Is the skin around the nail puffy or red? An ingrown toenail may be to blame. Marc Leonard, DPM, an OSF HealthCare podiatrist, says it’s an issue he sees frequently, but it’s one that’s easily preventable. Dr. Leonard says an ingrown toenail happens when the nail grows into the skin on the nail’s side. Some people get ingrown toenails due to a family history of the problem. They may just have wide toenails. For others, it’s a product of how they take care of their feet.

Dr. Leonard says some ingrown toenails will resolve on their own. But if a person has to come to a podiatrist’s office, it usually means the site is infected. “We might trim out the side of the nail. That’s the easiest way to treat it,” Dr. Leonard says. “In other situations, we have to numb the toe and take out the side of the nail.” If the toe is really inflamed and irritated, he says, a doctor will remove a larger portion of the nail, plus some excess skin and tissue. The patient may also be sent home with antibiotic medication to keep an infection down.

Purvis Memorial Scholarship Endowed at NCC
The Nash Community College Foundation has announced the recent establishment of an endowed scholarship, the Dr. Carl G. Purvis Memorial Scholarship, by his wife, Kathleen K. Purvis and family members. The endowed scholarship is based on a $30,000 gift that will recognize students enrolled in vocational programs at NCC. Half of the gift will be used to award more than $5,000 per year for three years.

1. One-touch options for accessing healthcare bills and making a payment. Four out of five consumers want to pay their healthcare bills via a single digital platform, a recent survey shows. Even among Baby Boomers and seniors, who are traditionally slower to adopt digital tech, two out of three want a digital healthcare payment experience. Increasingly, physician groups are leaning into text-to-pay solutions that send a secure link when a patient’s bill is ready to review and pay.
The most advanced solutions take consumers directly to their bill upon clicking on the link, without the need to enter a username and password. This creates a seamless experience for the user while meeting consumers where they are through the device they use most: their smartphone. I have voiced my disappointment in the ABPM for certifying so-called those podiatrists having a 3-year post-high school degree. The legal status of any relationship of ABPM and ABPM International does not change the fact that people who do not have a medical qualification will claim Board Certification from ABPM. It seems suggested that a 3-year degree without a residency is equivalent in rigor and content to a (U.S. based) DPM degree plus residency. Therefore, they have access to certification while some of us don't. Having been at the frontline with the Bachelor degree podiatry world, let me share two snipits to give a glimpse of the training:
I taught in an Australian podiatry program. I coordinated the pharmacology course. As I was not board certified, I was not able to teach in the course. The "podiatric surgeon" who holds a diploma in chiropody but is a "surgeon" taught the students that if a patient has a...
