PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
Tennis Requires Sport-Specific Shoes: IL Podiatrist
According to Rebecca Stack, DPM, a podiatrist with Northern Illinois Foot and Ankle Specialists, when it comes to tennis, standard running shoes and cross-training shoes won't do. "Foot and ankle injuries are common when players don't wear the right kind of shoes," Dr. Stack says.
|
Dr. Rebecca Stack |
Running shoes, for example, won't give you the stability and support you need for lateral movements. Instead, look for actual tennis shoes, and prioritize finding the right fit. Look for shoes that fit snugly and comfortably so your foot doesn't slide around or roll to the side. However, check that the shoe isn't too tight, as you can develop blisters or reduce circulation, Dr. Stack says.

AL Podiatrist Recognized for Helping Friend Serving in Ukraine
A veteran in Tallassee is doing what he can to help a fellow solider in Ukraine. His assistance is now being recognized by the Ukrainian government. 71-year-old Gregory Dubay, DPM is a highly decorated war hero. The retired lieutenant colonel and podiatrist served for 40 years, including time in the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. During Operation Desert Storm, Dubay suffered injuries, including the loss of his hearing. Even after retirement, the dedicated soldier is still finding ways to protect and serve others. Years before Russia invaded Ukraine, Dubay became friends with a man named Andrei, who is from Ukraine. The two have kept in contact over the years.
|
Dr. Gregory Dubay |
With food supplies becoming scarce in the war-torn country, Dr. Dubay knew he had to help. Over the last few months, he has packaged and shipped off nearly 30 boxes of food and supplies to the couple, along with things the Ukrainian army can use, like tactical gloves, batteries, binoculars, and two-way radios. Andrei has been able to use the radios to communicate with his subordinates without interception from Russian forces. To Dubay’s surprise, he received a medal in the mail from the Ukrainian government as a “thank you” for the packages. Dubay said the medal is the Ukrainian Cross of Glory and Merit.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Cryptocurrency Investing Rules for Busy Doctors
Cryptocurrencies can be complicated. As a busy medical professional, you likely do not have time to research tokens or the nuances of this specific asset class. As you invest, how will you know whether you are doing the right thing? As prices zoom up and down, it feels like you should do something in response to market movements, but what exactly?
3. Diversify
Diversification can reduce risk without hurting returns. We have long known about this in the traditional investing world, but it has been slow to arrive in cryptocurrency. Some assets go up in price, others go down. A balanced approach can be beneficial.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Nurse Practitioner As Referring MD
Can a nurse practitioner and their NPI number be used as the referring MD for “at risk” routine foot care in New York City?
PM News Subscriber
Response: With respect to a nurse practitioner being used as the referring provider for “At Risk,” Routine Foot Care to be performed by a podiatrist in New York State, it is important to access the website of National Government Services, the Medicare Administrative Carrier for the state of New York. You then need to download the LCD, L33636 – Routine Foot Care and Debridement of Nails and the associated article, A57759 – Billing and Coding: Routine Foot Care and Debridement of Nails, for the information that is needed. The article, A57759 provides the answer to the question in the above post.
Under “Coding Information,” specifically:
Group 4 Medical Necessity ICD-10-CM Codes Asterisk Explanation
“* For these diagnoses, the patient must be under the active care of a doctor of medicine or osteopathy (MD or DO) or qualified non-physician practitioner for the treatment and/or evaluation of the complicating disease process during the six (6) month period prior to the rendition of the routine-type service.” A nurse practitioner is a qualified non-physician practitioner.
One last point of information relating to the “asterisk explanation.” An “asterisk” systemic disease simply refers to a disease that Medicare designates the necessity for an MD or DO physician to make the diagnosis and actively treat the patient for that disease. Actively means that the patient has to have been seen by the MD or DO within a 6 month period for that specific disease. This is referred to as the “Active Care Requirement.” Per article A57759 that was referred to above, this can also be performed by a qualified non-physician practitioner (i.e. nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant).

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: The Tyranny of Status-But are you a REAL doctor?
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM
I had a good friend, (now deceased) whose father stopped talking to her for a year because she became a PhD psychologist instead of an MD. She loved it, getting on the floor with kids, counseling and testing them (when this was covered by local school districts.)
Jordan Peterson, PhD, became a psychologist. He never indicated that his family ostracized him for not taking the brass ring. Despite that, he changed the lives of millions of men over the World, for the better. Yes, you are a licensed surgeon; and you actually DO real surgery and treat patients for conditions that even MDs are not universally trained for. (Licensed yes, trained no). But because you don’t possess the letters that strike awe in the hearts of status, you are somehow “lacking.” Never mind that...
Editor's note: Dr. Rosenblatt's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
From: Jon Purdy, DPM
I was lucky enough to land a residency at a trauma 1 hospital in Chicago. To my amazement, there was full time Ortho services with only us podiatrists acting as both podiatric and Ortho residents. We had PAs at our disposal. We worked up and scrubbed every case from total pelvic reconstructions to foot and ankle surgeries.
All orthopedists on staff were welcoming and inclusive as we did rounds and presentations with them. One Ortho hated foot and ankle trauma, so with those cases, he would prep the patient and tell me “if you run into trouble, I’ll be in the lounge.” At the end of three years, he asked me to go into practice with him. Fast forward to Louisiana where the orthopedists, after twenty years here, still will not let us into their surgery center.
Jon Purdy, DPM, New Iberia, LA

From: Tim Shea, DPM, Gary Dorfman, DPM
Congratulations to Mel Barton for his significant achievement. Mel and wife Heather have been a highly influential force in the growth of our profession not only in California, but the nation as a whole. We are truly lucky to have Mel in our ranks for so long.
Tim Shea, DPM, Concord, CA
I have known Mel since I entered this profession in 1962. He was a dynamo in the Los Angeles County Podiatric Medical Association. He was the guy to “go to” if you needed anything done for the Association. He was an involved podiatrist, whether it was professional, political, or social. He and his wife Heather were the public relations specialists for the Association. God bless you Mel. Laine and I wish you a very happy and healthy 100th birthday.
Gary Dorfman, DPM, Dana Point, CA
