PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2
CA Podiatrist Celebrates 100th Birthday

Longtime Coachella Valley resident Mel Barton, DPM is not asking for much for his 100th birthday. "I just want to be happy. And just take life easy, that's all," said Dr. Barton. Barton's official birthday is on July 5 but he celebrated the amazing milestone Sunday morning with nearly 20 of his close friends and family. His three daughters organized a brunch in celebration of the amazing life he has lived.

                 Dr. Mel Barton

Barton said he had many priceless memories over the years. Some were painful like remarrying and losing his wife, to experiencing the hardships of The Great Depression and World War II. Other memories of his are full of joy, like going to school and becoming a podiatrist and practicing for almost 40 years.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
UK Podiatrist is New Chair of Royal College of Podiatry

It's best foot forward for a Dorchester podiatrist who has been appointed as the new chair of the Royal College of Podiatry's council. Michelle Scott, who runs the Dorchester Podiatry and Wellbeing Clinic, said she is delighted to take on the role which lasts for two years.

Michelle Scott

It comes ahead of the college's annual conference to be held in Liverpool from July 7-9. The Royal College of Podiatry (RCPod) is the professional association and trade union for registered chiropodists and podiatrists in the UK.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Cryptocurrency Investing Rules for Busy Doctors

Cryptocurrencies can be complicated. As a busy medical professional, you likely do not have time to research tokens or the nuances of this specific asset class. As you invest, how will you know whether you are doing the right thing? As prices zoom up and down, it feels like you should do something in response to market movements, but what exactly?

2. Do not try to time the market

It is difficult to know where cryptocurrency prices will move in the short term. The trick is to not worry about the short-term market. Focus on the long term and invest your money when you can. Do not waste time guessing where prices will go next; instead, focus on longer-term investments.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR)
From: Patrick Caputo, DPM

For Docs of the same/similar age, similar training, practice, etc. of Dr. Tip Sullivan...I have used 3 different EMRs, (the free Practice Fusion, the 16K TrackNet Server-based that went bankrupt before ever going live and never refunded, and NueMD, which was way too clumsy).

I went back to dictating, proofreading, saving a copy on my computer, and printing the hard copy into an old-fashioned chart. We purge unnecessary stuff from time to time. My "older" PCPs love my notes, especially diabetic foot notes for DME. They tell me that the notes are succinct and tolerable to read, compared to EMR notes from other DPMs, which are not. It has generated more referrals.

My long-term strategy and advice is NOT to take on an EMR now but let the next doctor or acquisition firm take on the burden, especially if they want to use a different EMR.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Darryl E Burns, DPM

Dr. DiGiacomo's letter reminded me of my beginnings with the orthopedists in Monterey CA. Having moved to Monterey in 1984 after my residency at Kern Hospital and 5 years of practice in Detroit, I applied to the community hospital. I was given forefoot privileges and proctership by the orthopedists (including pre-op consults in their offices!) This lasted for 5 years as they held up my advancement in their hospital department. Now, I did get full privileges at another hospital some 20 miles away. So I was able to take patients there. Not wanting to upset the local medical community, I just dealt with it. My attorney said the same things to me as Dr. DiGiacomo's, i.e. "Be Careful."

In 1989, I sued the hospital. I had a 5-hour trial with 5 orthopedists testifying against me. The jury was comprised of 12 local physicians. The orthopedists were very critical of my one year residency training. The "Perry Mason" moment was when I showed that the 12 orthopedists had done only a dozen foot cases over the last 10 years. Then, I presented the 700 procedures I did at Kern, hundreds of procedures in Detroit practice (5 years), and then my Monterey cases. I won the lawsuit, getting foot and ankle privileges. The best part was walking into the hospital CEO’s office a week later and asking for my attorney fees. I left with a $7,500 check and a "I am sorry about this."

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY)
From: Norman A. Wortzman, DPM, Lloyd Smith, DPM

I would like to join Adam Landsman DPM, PhD and others in congratulating Stuart Kigner, DPM, on his retirement after 38 years of service at Massachusetts General Hospital. Stu graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine, now Temple University, in 1981. He completed the Central Massachusetts podiatric residency program prior to joining MGH.

While Stu has focused the majority of his career on the non-surgical treatment of wound patients, he has been an integral part of our efforts to develop the surgical podiatry service currently in place at MGH. Stu has worked closely with the MGH Vascular Service in his efforts to prevent amputations. Stu has also been intimately involved in our podiatric research efforts. He has recently written a manuscript on off-loading diabetic wounds, currently submitted for publication. He will be remaining with the Podiatry Service as a member of our podiatric research team. Not only is Stu a good friend and colleague, but he has been a mentor to me, having served as lead podiatrist and as residency director prior to my assuming the role of Director of Podiatric Services. Congrats Stu on a much deserved retirement. Enjoy your time with your wife, children, and grandchildren.

Norman A. Wortzman, DPM, Boston, MA

I likewise congratulate my Massachusetts colleague, Stu Kigner. His loyalty and accomplishments are noteworthy. The story of MGH podiatry was complex and typical of many battles podiatry has fought. Since I am retired, I no longer know the latest status of our profession at that hospital system. I hope it is better than what I observed. I am sure others will know.

Lloyd Smith, DPM, APMA Past President

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA STATE COMPONENT NEWS)
From: David S. Wolf, DPM, Michael Lawrence, DPM

Bruce was a “star” in our podiatry school class (1967). His career as a surgeon/inventor with 7 joint reconstruction implants for the foot/ankle as well as his years of devotion to the California Podiatric Medical Association speaks volumes of his character. Now his philanthropy with this Legacy Gift will enable future generations for many professional endeavors.

We, his classmates, are so very proud to watch this “star” become a luminary.

David S. Wolf, DPM, Houston, TX

I want to echo the comments of my friends, Drs. Thuen. Roth, and Slowik regarding the most generous gift of Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Lawrence to the CPMA. Bruce has been my best friend with the added benefit of calling him my brother! And though the dollar amount is impressive, it pales compared to the collective contributions Bruce has made to our profession over the years.

Michael Lawrence, DPM, Chattanooga, TN

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Alan Sherman, DPM

The current PM News Quick Poll on virtual CME Credits is surveying how many CME credits podiatrists believe their state allows them to earn virtually/online, but the actual state requirements and limitations have been made available for many years to the profession on the PRESENT Podiatry website. Each year, PRESENT researches this directly with the state boards, either by checking their websites or when more clarification is needed, by placing phone calls to them. Here is a link: podiatry.com/State-Online-Podiatry-CME-Laws

We do this research and publish this information for 3 reasons: (1) Because in our communications with customers, we note that so many do not know what their state requires, (2) because there were many adjustments made to requirements during the last 3 years due to COVID and (3) because we are...
