TX Podiatrist and Orthopedist Have Similar Goals
In some parts of the country, the relationship between an orthopedic surgeon and a podiatrist has ranged from petty territorial squabbles to strained disputes somewhat like a serious cat- or dogfight. However, compatibility between the two medical professions can be successful, as evidenced by the United Regional Physician Group Specialty Clinic. Between Dr. Joshua Schacter, an orthopedic surgeon, and podiatrist Dr. Steven Klumb, the level of communication is healthy because correct patient evaluation and care come first.
|
|
Dr. Steven Klumb |
"Physicians are people," Schacter said. "You can have petty disputes in varying specialties, but if you are not careful, it can cause you to lose sight of what we are supposed to do and that's to give patients the best treatment and care possible. Here, we (Klumb and Schacter) combine our thoughts and information without conflict.

OH Podiatrist Heading to Rio Olympics
Dr. Mark Mendeszoon is a respected and renowned figure in area track and field — for his resume, service through SPIRE Institute, Achilles Running Shop, and Maple Leaf Track Club, and his work with athletes as a podiatrist. That respect and renown has led Mendeszoon to the Olympics for the second time.

EMR Strongly Linked to Physician Burnout - Mayo Study
Electronic health records and digital clerical work are strongly linked to burnout. A Mayo Clinic study has found that its electronic medical records system is leaving some of its physicians feeling over-worked. The lead author in the study was Dr. Tait Shanafelt. The Mayo Clinic teamed up with the American Medical Association and used data from more than 6,500 physicians who use electronic systems.
"Physicians using an electronic health record, using computerized physician order entry are at a dramatically increased risk for professional burnout," said Dr. Shanafelt, who is a Professor of Medicine with Mayo Clinic. “The introduction of computers into the examination room has the potential to shift physicians’ focus away from the patient and the human interaction, which is a source of meaning for physicians,” the study authors wrote.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
5 Steps to Maintaining Your Online Reputation as a Doc- Part 5
As a physician, you’ll have to devise a strategy to identify, monitor, and influence your digital reputation and credibility. Here are a few steps you should take to get started:
Step 5: Reply instantaneously
Whenever there is any review/feedback, reply instantaneously. Active social engagement is a positive sign of building a good online reputation. Address the comment publicly so that others can see that you are taking issues and complaints seriously.
By being proactive about online reputation management and responding effectively, physicians can turn the tables around in their favor. A well-crafted response to a bad review can help protect your reputation, minimize the review’s negative impact, and help create a sense of credibility. On the other hand, a humble response to a five-star/positive review can reinforce customer satisfaction and act as a catalyst for positive word-of-mouth. Don’t fear a professional online interaction. Figure out the “right way” to fight negative online reviews.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A | |
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM
I agree with Dr. James Christina, Executive Director of APMA who said that MACRA does not mean the "end" of podiatry. Dr. Christina correctly points out that many previous "attacks" against private practice have fallen aside. "Managed care and capitation" were high on that list, as well as various Medicare pay cuts. None had any effect on me. And I was not alone. We have seen these fads come and go like wind-blown clouds. One humorous example comes to mind many years ago when BC/BS decided to "require" that any treatment over 100 dollars obtain a second opinion. Apparently their bean-counters believed that most medical care was "unnecessary."
You can guess the outcome: Second opinion practices bloomed like flowers in the desert and BC/BS ended up paying for...
Editor's note: Dr. Rosenblatt's extended-length letter can be read here.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B | |
From: John Moglia, DPM
Since waiting for parity with MD/DO is the equivalent of Waiting for Godot, why not take the easier path to physician assistant (PA) or RN practitioner? - Either in the schools of podiatry as a combined degree, work study program, or by whatever practical means. I have seen podiatry reimbursements diminish to the point where I would gladly take a secure steady income with potential for a raise instead of a penalty under the MACRA plan.
John Moglia, DPM, Berkeley Hts, NJ

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1C | |
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM
Dr. Borreggine paints a pretty grey picture for podiatry. I can’t really opine if he is right or wrong. I can say that I take care of feet better than any NP, MD, DO, or PA that I know of - all the way from nails and calluses to flatfoot reconstructions. I don’t think I am special or alone - I think we all do!
It seems obvious to me that we as a profession are not going to change the things our government does by bitching and moaning about it. It will take action to save our profession; action by our associations and by each individual podiatrist. You may ask: What can I do? The answer for me is don’t accept Medicare as payment for any office work. If you develop a good reputation locally, you will be able to financially get by.
Tip Sullivan, DPM, Jackson, MS
