PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES

Diabetics Need to Check Feet Daily for Signs of Trouble: FL Podiatrist

“Diabetes is a chronic problem that requires daily care,” says Jaime Carbonell, DPM, foot surgeon in Miami. In addition to glucose control, daily care means checking your feet for any signs of trouble.

Dr. Jaime Carbonell

“When sensation is limited, small wounds, such as blisters from poorly fitting shoes, cause no pain, so you aren’t aware of them until they become serious,” explains Dr. Carbonell.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

CA Podiatrist Collects Over 3,000 Shoes for Disaster Victims

In the last three years, Dr. Michele Summers Colon has received over 3,000 pairs of shoes, which she has donated to various community organizations, including Souls 4 Soles, a local and global program which helps to get shoes to survivors of the recent Los Angeles County fires and the Oklahoma tornado disaster.

Dr. Michelle Summers Colon

As a practicing podiatrist for the last 15 years, Dr. Colon got her start in shoe donation programs that benefited homeless veterans when she earned her Master’s degree and DPM degree at Barry University in Miami in 1992. “It’s one way I give back to the community,” said Dr. Colon.

NY Podiatrist Interviewed About Nicaraguan Mission Trips

Drs. Charles Morelli and Jeffrey Siegel appeared on The Dawn Show this week for a full 30-minute interview about their repeated surgical mission trips to Nicaragua. They were interviewed on local New Jersey and Philadelphia television by Dawn Stensland Mendte (formerly of CNN), and were joined by Dr. Siegel's daughter Jackie and wife Laura who also accompanied them on their most recent trip.

"Dr. Siegel and I take this trip every year, along with students and residents from affiliated hospitals. We can't see ourselves stopping," says Dr. Morelli.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR

Wrong Choice of Footwear Can Lead to "Shoe-icide" - NY Podiatrist

Shoes  are an essential part of a wardrobe for men and women. Some people select shoes according to fashion and not on how comfortable they are with their shoes. According to podiatrist Dr. Hillary Brenner though, uncomfortable shoes such as “ultra-high heels could lead to everything from ankle sprains to chronic pain” leading to “shoe-icide.”

Dr. Hillary Brenner

People should therefore be aware of what are considered as the best and worst footwear to protect themselves from injury and sickness.

Physician Pay Increasingly Tied to Patient Satisfaction, Survey Says

Physicians may have an extra incentive to keep their patients from sitting long in the doctor’s office waiting room, as an increasing amount of their compensation is becoming based on patient satisfaction. In what appears to be the very beginning of a growing trend, a new survey shows two percent of primary care physicians’ compensation is based on “patient satisfaction metrics” while one percent of specialist physician compensation is based on “patient satisfaction metrics.”

It’s the first time patient satisfaction scores were part of an annual compensation report from the Medical Group Management Association but it likely won’t be the last. Across the country, business and health insurance companies are pushing for more patient satisfaction metrics, whether they are how quickly phone calls are returned to how long a patient sits in a physician office waiting area.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1B

RE: Freiberg's Infraction in 47 Year Old Male
From: Don Peacock, DPM

Based on the x-ray and the clinical history, I feel comfortable that this condition is Freiberg’s disease. Obviously, an MRI can provide information in cases where Freiberg disease is suspected, but no significant radiographic alterations are noted. In this case, there is significant radiographic alteration of the second metatarsal phalangeal joint. This case appears to be a stage 4 necrosis of the metatarsalphalangeal joint.

Approach this deformity through minimally invasive surgery by performing a ...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER)

RE: E/M with Nail Debridement Codes (Marc Katz, DPM)
From: Michael S Josovitz, DPM

According to Medicare, billing an E & M code is allowed for initial visit patients, along with routine foot care coding. This has been the case. I am from NJ and have been told this many times. For follow-up visits, you cannot use the E & M code with the routine foot care codes.
