PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
Walking Barefoot on Hot Surfaces Presents Burn Danger: LA Podiatrist

With another heat advisory approaching the region, a Monroe, LA podiatrist says a child running on hot concrete with no socks or shoes can be unsafe. When the temperature is 95 degrees or higher, the risks of burns increase; especially for children under two years old. Luke Joseph Hunter, DPM, a podiatrist and surgeon with The Foot and Ankle Clinics in Monroe-West Monroe, says children under the age of two are more at risk because the skin on their feet is thinner and they lack the reflexes to remove themselves from the burning area.

Dr. Luke Hunter

“And these aren’t just first-degrees; these are second-degree burns with blistering - more pain, more swelling, so it can happen in as little as two seconds. You know, depending on how [hot] the asphalt or the concrete is,” says Dr. Hunter. He says this applies to people of all ages and people with decreased feeling in their feet.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2
MA Podiatrist Provides Summertime Foot Health Tips

Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, president of the American College of Foot & Ankle Pediatrics appeared on NBC’s Mass Appeal to talk about summertime foot tips. Dr. DeCaro talked about how important it is to protect your feet during the hot summer months. “If you have to wear flip-flops, make sure you apply waterproof high SPF sunscreen (and apply it regularly) to your feet. A lot of people make the mistake of frolicking their toes in the water at the beach or pool (unlike other parts of their body) and not realizing the sunscreen is wearing off!”

Dr. Louis DeCaro

According to Dr. DeCaro, “You should never wear flip-flops while walking long distances. Even the sturdiest flip-flops offer little in terms of shock absorption and arch support. If you must wear something open toed in the summer, wear a sturdy closed back sandal with arch support. It offers more support and control and will be safer in the long run.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Tips to Get a Raise from Your Payers

Negotiating a successful payer contract increase is possible for those willing to craft a thoughtful, data-driven argument for why they deserve more money.

10. Know wher you''ll draw the line.

“If a payer isn’t going to pay comparable rates or increases, you always have the option to leave the network with a termination,” says Andrew Harding, co-founder and vice president of customer success at Rivet.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY)
RE: The Retirement of Stuart Kigner, DPM
From: Adam Landsman, DPM

Dr. Stuart Kigner

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (SPORTS MEDICINE)
RE: Rearfoot Striking in Running is Not Over-striding
From: Kevin A. Kirby, DPM

While lecturing at a podiatry conference, one of the other podiatrists lecturing on running made a claim about running that I need to address, since I have seen this type of misinformation being also spread on the Internet. What this lecturer stated was that if a runner has posterior heel wear on their running shoes, this means that they are a rearfoot-striking runner and are, therefore, also “over-striding”. While I certainly agree that posterior heel wear at the heel of the running shoe outersole indicates a rearfoot-striking style of running gait, his further claim that a rearfoot-striking pattern in running gait also indicates “over-striding” is simply not true.

Unfortunately, many of the barefoot running and minimalist running shoe zealots who were quite vocal on the Internet during the ill-fated barefoot running and minimalist running shoe fads of a decade ago, also wrongly proclaimed that rearfoot-striking running is somehow an incorrect way to run, leading to injuries, and is not “natural”. They made unsupported statements about rearfoot-striking running that revolved around their odd concept that...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Why Does Podiatry Continue to be Its Own Worst Enemy?
From: John Keenan, DPM

I've read with interest the viewpoints from the “Who wants to be a podiatrist?” and podiatrists vs. Orthopod letters. Some of those viewpoints come from doctors with names I readily recognize, and some from doctors I've never heard of. All have at least some objective facts and some subjective opinions. Below are some of my opinions, and hopefully I'll be able to throw in some subjective facts to back them up.

Podiatrists are their own worst enemies. A podiatrist who has been practicing for years more than myself corrected me once: we don't do 'routine foot care' (RFC). We do 'at-risk foot care'. Medicare doesn't pay for RFC unless that patient needs the care of a professional due to risk factors (or pain). Why do we refer to it as 'routine'? If it's that routine, could (apologies to GEICO) a caveman do it? Yet we continue to minimize the services we provide in our own minds. Don't. We save limbs. We save a lot of healthcare dollars by catching problems early...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA STATE COMPONENT NEWS)
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH, Paul Slowik, DPM, Gary R Dorfman, DPM

Congrats to Bruce Lawrence for his contribution of $500,000 to the CPMA. I hope this inspires others to help push our profession forward.

Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA

It has been my privilege and honor to practice in the same city as Dr. Lawrence. His degree of professionalism and innovation is unequalled. He is the most “pro podiatry” practitioner I have ever met. His generosity of $500k is unparalleled. Thank you Bruce for contributing to this most noble cause, the Legacy Fund!

Paul Slowik, DPM, Oceanside, CA

Kudos to Dr. Lawrence for his magnificent gift to the CPMA’s Legacy Fund. This is the true, unselfish meaning of, “giving back to your profession” for what it has given to you. He has my sincere admiration and hopefully that of the entire profession.

Gary R Dorfman, DPM, Dana Point, CA
