AT THE COLLEGES |
Family of Scholl College Graduates Celebrates Commencement
Three generations of the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine alumni network gathered on stage at Rosalind Franklin University’s 104th Commencement, when Andres Caneva, DPM ’18, was hooded by his father Daryl Caneva, DPM '88, and his grandfather Reno Caneva, DPM '59. That next step is three years of residency training at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, Chicago. The youngest Dr. Caneva, who earned a bachelor’s in biology from Northwestern University, is considering joining his father in private practice.

The Caneva family can actually count six generations of keen interest in the lower extremity. Dr. Reno Caneva’s father, who owned a shoe store, urged him to attend Scholl College. His grandfather and Italian great grandfather, also made and repaired shoes. Two more family members are taking the arduous path to a podiatric medical degree. Roberto Caneva, Andres’ brother, is a second-year student at Scholl College. Zachary Trent, a first cousin, arrives on campus in the fall.

OTC Pain Meds Do Not Speed Healing: AZ Podiatrist
We’ve all heard the phrase “no pain, no gain,” but if you’re using drugs to “push through the pain” of exercise, you’re likely doing more harm than good. Over-the-counter medications can reduce inflammation and pain, but they can also lead to damage if you take them to get through a workout. “They do not speed healing,” says Alan Shih, DPM, director of podiatry at Head to Toe Healthcare in Tucson, AZ, “and they allow you to overstress damaged tissue.” Instead, try these supplements for healthy exercise:
|
Dr. Alan Shih |
Magnesium: The mineral relaxes muscles and may help to prevent cramping. Take 500 mg daily. Ribose: Also called d-ribose, this natural sugar that’s produced by the body fuels energy production in muscles, helps them relax, and improves sleep. Take a powdered form, 5 grams three times daily for three weeks to increase cellular levels, then 5 grams twice daily for maintenance.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
RI Podiatrist Provides Commencement Tips to Graduates
Throughout May and June, robed college graduates listened to commencement speeches delivered by well-known lawmakers, judges, television personalities, actors, and chief executive officers of businesses. Many of the orators advised the young adults on how to create a more rewarding personal and professional life in their later years. Members of the Association of Rhode Island Authors (ARIA) also have insightful advice to give to the class of 2018 on aging gracefully in a challenging and changing world .

Dr. Michael Battey |
Michael A. Battey, DPM, a podiatrist, lives in East Greenwich. He authored The Parent Trap, Vol. 1, the first of a two-volume collection of humorous and insightful observations on contemporary teen parenting. Commencement tips: “There is a power to kindness. There is no act, which you can choose, which will be more powerful. It is stronger than the most reasoned logic. It can vanquish the sharpest wit. Deceptive at times and preternaturally puzzling, it is your best ally. It elevates discussions and makes you a better person. It is defining, and it is memorable.”

All those above him were out of the state for two days, so he assumed the role of Nebraska's acting governor.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
4 Ways to Reduce the Risk of a Lawsuit - Part 2
2. Address risk head on - One approach that can be tremendously helpful is to form risk committees in the practice, and for physicians to actively participate in identifying high-risk areas, says Diane C. Fernald, RN, JD, vice president of education and consulting services at Med-IQ, headquartered in Baltimore. If those at the top make it clear they recognize that medicine is a risky business, everyone in the practice is in a better position to identify and bring forward any potential liabilities.
A medical assistant may notice the practice lacks a location where they can speak quietly during patient intakes. “If they feel that no one will snap their heads off if they go directly to the head of the practice and say, ‘I think we should be doing things differently,’ then people are more likely to suggest ways to improve the practice,” Fernald says.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
RE: Charging Insurance Companies for Chart Reviews
From: Steven Frydman, DPM
Five years ago, I talked to a supervisor at Humana (Medicare Advantage) about getting paid for the charts that were being requested for review. Every 2-3 months, they requested 20-30 charts. He said that he would have to check with higher-ups and get back to me. I did not hear from him and the requests stopped. I thought I had succeeded. About 6 months later, I received a registered letter stating that I was no longer needed as an in-network provider. I appealed the action, but they stated that there were enough DPMs to service their population. I was not an out of the ordinary biller or over-utilizer. I wonder why this happened. Coincidence?
