AZ Podiatrist Uses Laser to Treat Chronic Plantar Fasciitis
Diane Evans experienced unbearable heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis, which is basically damage to the ligament that connects the heel to the front of the foot. She was afraid she might need surgery. But Dr. Alan Shih at Head to Toe Health Care prescribed laser treatment to ease her pain. Dr. Shih says the laser helps heal the soft tissue and regenerate the damaged nerves.

Dr. Alan Shih |
"More and more people are looking for advanced procedures that don't involve surgery, or procedures that are minimally invasive, and procedures that get people back to work quickly, " Dr. Shih said.

UK Podiatrist Spearheads “Putting Feet First” Event
Around 29 amputations are being carried out in Scarborough and Ryedale each year - with the national figure now at an all-time high of 145 amputations per week. To help address this issue, a “Putting Feet First” event is being held in Scarborough on July 5. Sammy Lambert, podiatry team lead, said, "Health promotion and education is essential to empowering patients living with diabetes. It is imperative people living with diabetes know when to seek help and importantly who to seek it from."
|
|
Sammy Lambert |
“The Scarborough, Whitby, and Ryedale Podiatry team, as part of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, is passionate about delivering high quality care and improving people’s awareness of lower limb risks associated with diabetes with rapid referral into podiatry if problems occur,” said Lambert.

| MACRA UPDATE | |
Many Physicians Predict Mass Exodus From Medicare Over MACRA
Almost four in 10 physicians in solo and small group practices predict a mass exodus from Medicare within their ranks on account of the program's new payment plan and its punishing penalties, a Medscape Medical News survey reveals. Fifty-nine percent of physicians in practices with fewer than 25 clinicians also said they expect to receive a performance penalty as high as 4% under proposed regulations that implement the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015. Only 9% of physicians in under-25 groups expect a bonus, with another 12% counting on no change in compensation.
Roughly one third of physicians in small practices said merger into larger groups promises to be the most likely fallout from MACRA. CMS estimates that 54% of all physicians in MIPS will receive a bonus, most of them in practices with more than 24 members, and 46% would be penalized.

5 Steps to Maintaining Your Online Reputation as a Doc- Part 4
As a physician, you’ll have to devise a strategy to identify, monitor, and influence your digital reputation and credibility. Here are a few steps you should take to get started:
Step 4: Be “proactive” not “reactive” for negative reviews
These reviews can have a huge impact on patients and possibly affect the overall success rating for any physician. Physicians need to realize the inevitable fact that there will always be some negative or critical reviews written about you. Dealing with the reviews optimistically opens up the lines of communication between the physician and the patients. Don’t fear a professional online interaction, and figure out the “right way” to fight negative online reviews.

Query: Podiatric Lecture for Pipefitters/Plumbers
I was approached by a local pipefitter and plumbers union to give two podiatry-related lectures to their members. One lecture is to retired or near-retired workers on managing foot problems and ailments they may have suffered through their careers. The other lecture is to new workers on how to prevent potential foot pain and problems. Each lecture is to be 90 minutes with Q&A to follow. Any recommendations or resources specific to pipefitters and plumbers would be appreciated.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A | |
From: James R. Christina, DPM
Please allow me to provide some background, as well as some information about what APMA members can expect with regard to MACRA and its potential effect on podiatrists. Members can also visit www.apma.org/macra to access all our resources on this topic.
MACRA is legislation that was passed by Congress and signed by the president. The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) repealed the sustainable growth rate (SGR) and replaced it with the Merit-based Incentive Payment Systems (MIPS) and Alternative Payment Models (APMs), among many other programs the legislation addressed. Once Congress passes a law, the implementation of the law falls to regulatory agencies, and in this case...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B | |
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
I have to agree very little with Dr. Jacobs on his recent posting with respect to the "prosper" list and for the future of podiatric medicine. However, I cannot agree at all with the response from "Name Withheld".
First, Dr. Jacobs' list is quite complete and makes total sense. But what are the current percentages of podiatrists who hold these positions? I do not know if we have exact statistics from any of our profession organizations on this subject matter. It would be interesting to see the actual number of podiatrists who are employed. The number of private practice podiatrists still outnumbers the ones who are...

RE: Outrageous NASCAR Driver's Foot of the Day
Unless you’re a podiatrist, or perhaps one of those people who revels in seeing gross stuff on the Internet, you might not want to look at this tweet by NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick. With that disclaimer, your own morbid curiosity is going to get the best of you and force you to look, right? Right. Here we go!
|
|
Kevin Harvick's foot after NASCAR race |
You see, driving a race car isn’t as simple as taking a few laps around the neighborhood to run some morning errands. Every creature comfort has been stripped out for fast, hot, nasty speed. Likewise, racing shoes tend to prioritize pedal feel over support and coziness. You’re there to drive fast, not to walk the mall with your fellow septuagenarians.
