AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM Poster Competition Reveals Students’ Interest in Research

Poster Day 2021 at NYCPM followed Covid protocols, but Zoom couldn’t suppress the quality of work displayed by the Class of 2022. Poster Day was organized by Eileen D. Chusid, PhD, Dean and Associate Professor of the Division of Pre-Clinical Sciences and Kenneth H. Astrin, PhD, Associate Professor of the division. They were joined on the steering committee by Ronald Soave, DPM, Professor and Dean of the Division of Clinical Sciences. The posters were once again judged by D. Scot Malay, DPM, MSCE, Director of Podiatric Research at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia and editor of the Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery

(L-R) Bowen Yang, Malika Reddy, Dr. Susan Rice, Cheyenne Raimondi, and Ahadullah Tokhi.

A team of 20 clinical faculty mentored the third-year student groups as they worked on their posters. Posters were presented by 19 different groups of students. The winning poster – “Retrospective Review of Post-Operative Outcomes using an Alternative Incisional Approach for the Management of Adductovarus Fifth Digit Deformity” -- was mentored by Susan Rice, DPM and created by students Malika Reddy, Cheyenne Raimon, Bowen Yang, and Ahadullah Tokhi. The Queens Division of NYSPMA granted the winners $1,000.

HOSPITAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Cessation of Smoking Means Faster Healing: ND Podiatrist

Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC) is now offering tobacco treatment for patients admitted to the hospital. This treatment is important, said Rachael Renschler, DPM, podiatrist/foot and ankle surgeon and chief of the JRMC Specialty Clinic. Tobacco and nicotine use delays and interrupts the healing process.

Dr. Rachael Renschler

“Whether the patients in our hospital are recovering from surgery or the flu, recovery has fewer complications and is faster without tobacco use,” Dr, Renschler said. “Offering this treatment while a patient is already in our care supports them in their immediate recovery as well as their long-term health.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Can’t Miss Financial Strategies for Practices - Part 5

5) Create a Positive Culture

Demonstrate and have a high-quality mission, vision, and values statement for your organization and commit to customer service training to really create a high morale and a great patient experience.
  • Dissatisfied employees lead to dissatisfied patients, which can cause them to leave the practice.
  • Track productivity and patient satisfaction levels to identify problems. Don’t be afraid to move on from employees who aren’t delivering great service or who aren’t contributing enough.
  • Provide training. Sometimes people fail because they don’t understand how to do their job.
  • Translate larger organizational goals down to the employee so they understand how their contribution makes a difference.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Calcaneal Vascular Remnant

Has anyone seen an MRI (or MRI report) with the finding of a "calcaneal vascular remnant"? It is typically found just inferior to the talo-calcaneal joint. Initially, it looked to me to be a stress fracture. The radiologist directed me to studies identifying the calcaneal vascular remnant.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Paul T Slowik, DPM

All this talk about parity with MDs/DOs and now comparing our training with NPs and PAs is baffling. Maybe it’s because I practiced in a progressive city of Oceanside, CA, but we were considered physicians by patients, hospitals, physicians, and other sub-specialties in every way. In my opinion, we are not limited by our license, but only ourselves and our own self-perception. I acted like a physician and was treated as such. We are not primary care providers nor were we trained to be them. Do you think a hand orthopedic surgeon wonders if he is a physician or “real doctor” because he/she knows they are not PCPs?

Most of podiatrists’ problems originate in their own head. If you believe in yourself, others will too.

Paul T Slowik, DPM, Oceanside, CA
