PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW |
TX Podiatrist Charged in $45M Medicare Fraud Scheme
A podiatrist from The Woodlands and his business partner stole $45 million by fraudulently billing Medicare for "second skin" procedures he performed on patients who didn't need them, according to the Justice Department. Dr. David Jenson and Nestor Refael Romero Magallanes are also accused of trying to cover up the fraud after they became aware of a federal investigation into their business, Doctor's Inc.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (GUEST EDITORIALS) |
RE: Becoming a Podiatrist
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
Considering the recent and mostly recurrent news about the low enrollment numbers in all the podiatry schools in the U.S. for the incoming class of 2029, the profession is still thriving, especially for those in practice for the last four decades and beyond. Why is that? Why is this profession still a successful medical occupation? There must be a reason. Every one of my colleagues that I graduated with in 1988, along with others who graduated before and after me, are still working and making a wonderful living and have a great career. Yes, there are those that have left the profession to excel in other things for other reasons, but graduates with a DPM degree are doing quite well financially. They have continued to practice, considering the changes with insurance reimbursement fees that have waned, competition with corporate and hospital employment, the historical battles with scope or practice limitations, and/or garnering respect from our allopathic/osteopathic colleagues.
The profession has certainly evolved through the years from the years of just providing foot care back over 75 years ago to now being the leading foot and ankle healthcare providers in the nation. The profession of podiatry has always weathered the storms of adversity and has found its way by navigating or forging a path to allow...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Steven Finer, DPM
I agree with Dr. Lai. Unless your initials say MD or DO, we will always be placed with that other group. Look what the DOs have accomplished since the 1970s.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT RECRUITMENT) |
From: Aaron Ben Pearl, DPM, Douglas Ritchie, DPM
In response to Bret’s letter, I say that any innovative solution should be considered, not only for student enrollment. I will offer two quotes. One from a book that was made even more well known in pop culture called Moneyball. The second from the birth of our nation. In Moneyball, when faced with the prospect of yet another losing season, Oakland A’s general manager, Billy Beane traded overpaid players for utility players that could get on base and turn the club around. His phrase was “Adapt or die.”
It is not well known, but Ben Franklin was a political cartoonist. He came up with a phrase, and illustration, "Join or die.” Perhaps it’s time for a little more collaboration all the way around.
Aaron Ben Pearl, DPM, Arlington, VA
I read with great disappointment Dr. Ribotsky’s characterization of the current student recruitment campaign at the schools of podiatric medicine across the United States. Dr. Ribotsky described the role of podiatrists in mentoring prospective students as “unpaid marketing representatives for private businesses, without receiving any professional development opportunities or other forms of remuneration in return.” He proposes that podiatric physicians who participate in a recruitment and mentoring program for pre-medical students “invest considerable time and effort in activities that primarily benefit private educational institutions financially.”
I believe that Dr. Ribotsky has confused the current recruiting campaign of podiatric medical schools with his own previous efforts to recruit vendors to support his for-profit seminars. His philosophy of the need for “mutual benefits” for all parties may have been a strategy to get commercial companies to invest in...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
If you read the recent article titled, “Our House is on Fire” in Podiatry Management, it’s probably because you have some interest in podiatric education. You still have a large loan for your education, you are looking to hire a new associate/partner, thinking about selling your practice to a future graduate, teach at one of the podiatry schools, are a podiatric residency director, or are a current podiatry student. That pretty much takes care of the whole profession and, I might sum it all up by stating, “You have a skin in this game.”
Dr. DeHeer reminded me that it’s easy to be a Monday morning quarterback when tragedy arises. Almost as easy as it is to scream, “Monday morning quarterback.” By now we expect more. Let me remind Dr. DeHeer that, as President of the APMA, he has moved through all the chairs and probably has some thoughts about podiatric education. I guess everyone missed the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel not being daylight but...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
I am so saddened to hear of Joe’s passing. Not only were we classmates; we had recently become reconnected while at conferences in Chicago. He was a gentle soft-spoken man, but he spoke his mind when necessary and made his point clear. He will be missed by all that were fortunate to have known him. My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends. RIP Joe.
