PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS

NC Podiatrist Discuss Prevention and Treatment of Blisters

The first step for prevention of blisters, says Dr. Jane Andersen, a podiatrist in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association, is to buy shoes that are comfortable when you buy them and don't need to be "broken in." Look for soft fabrics or leathers, and then take them for a test drive at home for an hour or so before you wear them outside to make sure they stay pain-free. You can also try lining any painful spots with moleskin to prevent the friction that ultimately causes blisters.

Dr. Jane Andersen

But sometimes even seemingly comfy shoes can cause problems. If you do end up in pain, clean the blister with regular hand soap and try to leave it intact. But if the pain is unbearable, use an alcohol-sterilized needle to poke a tiny hole in the side of the blister and drain the fluid out, leaving all the skin intact. Then apply some antibiotic ointment and cover with a Band-Aid. (Don't try this at home if you're diabetic, though, Andersen cautions.)

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY (POSTHUMOUSLY)
Garden Dedicated in Memory of WI Podiatrist

The family of the late Dr. Ian Furness of Fond du Lac dedicated a garden in his memory on Saturday, May 30. The memorial garden is located at the entrance to the Foot and Ankle Clinic at Agnesian Health Plaza. Incorporated in the garden are English garden plantings, benches, and a large boulder which looks like the mountains and volcanoes that Dr. Furness liked to climb. The plaque on the boulder reads: "In Memory of Dr. Ian C. Furness 1954 — 2012 An exceptional and caring doctor, Leader in Podiatric Medicine & Surgery, Founder of Family Foot Clinic in Fond du Lac and Chilton 1984 — 2012."

Dr. Ian Furness - Susan Furness dedicates garden in her husband's memory.

Dr. Furness was President of Family Foot Clinic for 28 years until his tragic death in 2012. This large podiatric medical and surgical practice is now part of Agnesian HealthCare Foot and Ankle Clinic, the reason why the memorial garden is located there.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Bret Ribotsky:  Polls consistently have shown that podiatrists favor a change from the DPM degree to MD or DO. Why hasn't this change occurred?

Dr. Barry Block

Barry Block: Podiatry is not a true democracy; it is a republic (representation). Our leaders tend to be older established practitioners, mostly in their 50s and 60s, who have the least to gain by such a change. If the APMA would allow a true vote of ALL members on this issue, then this change could proceed. We probably need to wait until we get more leaders who are willing to plant seeds for a tree which will bear fruit that they will personally never enjoy.

Drs. Patrick DeHeer and Nick Campitelli

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's show features podiatrists Dr. Patrick DeHeer and Nick Campitelli. You can register for future events by clicking here

HIPAA UPDATE
10 Requirements You Need in a Business Associate Agreement - Part 2

6. To the extent the business associate is to carry out a covered entity's obligation under HIPAA, require that the business associate comply with the requirement relevant to the obligation.
7. Ensure that internal practices, books and records relating to the use and disclosure of PHI by the business associate will be made available to the Department of Health and Human Services to determine the covered entity's HIPAA compliance.
8. Require that the business associate return or destroy all PHI received from, or created or received by the business associate on the covered entity's behalf, upon termination of the contract.
9. Require that business associates enter agreements with their subcontractors that may have access to PHI.
10. Allow the covered entity to terminate the contract if the business associate violates a material term of the contract.

Other tips include: Keep all agreements in a centralized location that can be accessed anytime, know when agreements expire, continually monitor buisness associate compliance by issuing assessments, and include business associates in your risk analyses.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

10 Reasons to Outsource Medical Billing - Part 4

9. Have a resource at payer offices.

The biller in an individual practice deals with all the payers, and is essentially anonymous to all of them. A biller at a billing service typically deals with a subset of payers, and often with a single payer. That allows him to develop personal relationships that expedite problem resolution.

10. Be prepared for a payer audit.

You will have an expert advocate in case of a payer's audit. A payer's audit is in the ordinary course of business for a billing service. They know the process and the vocabulary, and they have all the documentation at hand.

In general, it makes good business sense to outsource the billing for most medical practices. That said, the outsourcing must be done to a competent billing service and the relationship must still be managed by the medical practice.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Gone With the Wind
From: Dale Feinberg DPM, CPed

Since you are reading PM News, this means you cannot help but see your future as a free-standing podiatrist evaporating in the mist. I have spent the last four years traveling on my Harley across this great country visiting all the old civil war battlefields during our nation’s sesquicentennial celebration of our history and southern heritage. I was there at Gettysburg and Pickett's charge and Appomattox, Virginia and saw grown men cry as they saw the remembrance of their heritage and forefathers' way of life come to an end. Those brave boys laid down their battle flags but their spirit remained alive in a flag that was the battle flag of Virginia and never represented slavery.

The fact is 95% of the soldiers did not own slaves but fought because their homeland was invaded. So in a wave of national hysteria, we are taking away their memory and lowering their flag, in an act that defies our First Amendment's freedom of speech rights. Your rights as a podiatrist are also being taken away. Gone are the days of...
