AAPSM to Work with Dropping Dimes Foundation to Help Former ABA Players

The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) has announced a new program to help the Dropping Dimes Foundation (DDF) in providing podiatric care for former American Basketball Association (ABA) basketball players. Recognizing the need to help these former ABA players (now between the ages of 64 and 80 years old), DDF was founded in October of 2014. In less than 4 years, DDF, a not-for-profit foundation, has located over 350 former ABA players, and is dedicated to maintaining their health and well-being.

Dr. Alex Kor and former ABA star Artis Gilmore

Another former Indiana Pacer ball boy, Alex Kor, DPM, who attended the 50th Reunion of the ABA in April 2018, is in the process of creating a national network of AAPSM Members who will provide podiatric care for these former athletes.

PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS
Podiatrists Serve on Medical Mission Trip to Honduras

Drs. Neal Kramer (Bethlehem, PA), Brittany Mayer (PGY-2 Resident at DVA Maryland/Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics) and Shaun Latshaw (MS4,TUSPM) recently joined a team of physicians, wound care specialists, an oral surgeon, nurses, and support staff on a medical mission trip to La Entrada de Copan, Honduras. In one week, the medical mission team saw and treated over 600 patients throughout the villages of La Entrada de Copan and at the Manos Amigas Clinic, while the podiatric surgery team provided patients with all aspects of podiatric care, including surgical intervention and wound care.

Honduras Medical Mission

Partnering with “Serving at the Crossroads” and the Honduran NGO, the mission’s purpose is to not only treat and serve those less fortunate, but to also educate the physicians and staff at the Manos Amigas clinic for long-term patient care and sustainability. With the generosity of product donations from gSource Surgical Instrumentation, MiMedx, Organogenesis, local sponsors via monetary donations, and the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, the mission was a great success.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES
TX Podiatrist Wins ADA Andrew Marvin Levine Travel Award

P. Andrew Crisologo, DPM, was awarded the Marvin Levine Travel Award at the American Diabetes Association 78th Scientific Session held in Orlando, Florida, for his research paper titled “Are We Misdiagnosing Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis”. Dr. Crisologo is a diabetic limb salvage fellow in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

Dr. P. Andrew Crisologo

Chrisologo's paper compared differences in the incidence of osteomyelitis based on different ways the gold standard (bone biopsy) could be used. He found significant differences in “positive bone biopsies” with traditional cultures, 16s rRNA sequencing and histology assessment that could reflect a 37% difference in diagnosed cases despite meeting criteria for the “gold standard”.

PODIATRIC ECONOMICS
Podiatry One of Florida’s Highest Paying Jobs

Do you have a ground-breaking theory on where the universe’s antimatter is hiding? Maybe you are exceptional at calculating risk, or enjoy rooting around in mouths or examining feet. Those jobs — physicist, actuary, dentist, podiatrist — would put you in one of the state’s 53 occupations that paid an average of at least $100,000.

At $132,730, podiatrists made the top 20 list, exceeding that of lawyers ($127,730).

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
4 Ways to Reduce the Risk of a Lawsuit - Part 1

1. Write (or rewrite) your employee handbook. - In the employee-employer relationship arena, it’s important to have a good handbook that addresses both federal and state law issues, says Matthew Fisher, JD, partner and chair of the health law group at Mirick O’Connell in Worcester, MA. States may have specific requirements around maternity and paternity leave, for example, or how much (if any) notice a practice can demand employees provide before taking sick or personal leave. By becoming familiar with their rights and obligations as employers, physicians and practice managers can reduce their risks of litigation stemming from human resource problems.

Fisher encourages physicians to avoid a “head in the sand” mentality, where a lack of past problems leads them to believe they’re in the clear. Practices should be proactive, thinking ahead about how to implement the necessary protections and promote an appropriate workplace environment. The strategy will require the investment of time and money in compliance and developing good employee relations. In the long run, though, Fisher says this will prove beneficial.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

This issue is not based on one's state limit as I believe those regulations only apply for patients wishing to access their medical records. I don't believe these apply to insurance carriers or their delegated contractors requesting information. I'm sure if you review your managed care contracts, you won't find that there is a preclusion for charging them for this information, only that if requested, information must be provided.

Furthermore, the insurance carriers (or their third-party intermediaries) are harassing doctors by requesting an inordinate amount of records in a very short time frame. These requests are purely based on the carrier's greed so the carrier can potentially assign patients to a...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: From: Raymond S. Murano, MEd, DPM

Dr. Jeffrey Kass points out that ABFAS is the only ticket to OR privileges, at least in New York. I hasten to point out that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Registration in Podiatry named ABLES as one of the boards recognized by the Commonwealth.

The naming of any single board as the only viable certifying board would seem to be in direct contravention of Code of Federal Regulations governing “Participation of Hospitals” paragraph 482.12  which covers “Standards and Verification” stating that a hospital's governing body must - amongst other items - comply with subsection (7) that reads “Ensure that under no circumstance is the accordance of staff membership or professional privileges in the hospital solely dependent upon certification, fellowship, or membership in a specialty body or society.”
