Failed Medicaid Foot Care Proposal Could Cost Taxpayers More: NV Podiatrist
A proposal to include routine foot care by podiatrists for adult Medicaid recipients failed to gain the Nevada Legislature’s approval this year. But Nevada podiatrists say the state risks spending more money to address bigger problems that could be prevented. Dr. Kenneth Fatkin of Henderson said podiatrists focus on foot and ankle issues with greater depth and breadth, keeping Medicaid recipients out of emergency rooms and urgent care clinics by providing preventative care.
|
|
Dr. Kenneth Fatkin |
“These issues can be treated so much more cost effectively by a podiatrist,” said Fatkin, the incoming president of the Nevada Podiatric Association. Minor foot problems can become exacerbated over time, sometimes resulting in amputations of toes, feet, or parts of the legs. “The savings by preventing those procedures would be astronomical,” Fatkin said. “We’re still providing foot care. We’re just paying for it by more important means.”

SC Podiatrist Organizes Youth Triathlon
The Summerville Family YMCA has opened registration for its seventh annual Youth Triathlon. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15 at The Ponds Farmhouse. The triathlon began in 2009, with a brainstorm from Dr. Hal Hatchett, a resident of The Ponds, an avid triathlete and Summerville podiatrist. He approached the YMCA to coordinate the event and since its first appearance, the YMCA Youth Triathlon has repeatedly been a success for children and families in the Summerville community.

“Each parent and family member that I’ve spoken to says that the triathlon is an amazing success—each year we have over 200 children participate!” Hatchett said. “They were so proud of their children. Not many kids can say ‘I finished a triathlon!’ To the YMCA staff and myself, we feel that everyone who participates is a winner. I am excited to see this year’s turnout.”

Ballet Flats are the Worst Summer Shoes: NY Podiatrist
Warm-weather footwear is comfy and easy, but it can lead to serious foot problems. We take a closer look. The worst summer shoes are ballet flats "The flattest, flimsiest styles of these shoes can do as much harm -- if not more -- as a pair of high heels," says says Hillary Brenner, DPM, a podiatric surgeon in New York.
|
|
Dr. Hillary Brenner |
"Overwearing flats can cause pain in the arches and heels and can lead to bunions. There's absolutely no cushion or support, but people wear them like they're athletic sneakers. That's what makes them dangerous." If you wear ballet flats at work, stash them at your desk and commute in sneakers, suggests Dr. Brenner. Your feet will thank you.

Boston Bomber Sent to Same Death Row Prison as IL Podiatrist
Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev arrived at the U.S. Penitentiary in Florence, Colorado, on Thursday, a day after he was sentenced to death. A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Justice confirmed that Tsarnaev was being held at the high-security facility. Assistant U.S. Attorney William Weinreb said Tsarnaev is eventually expected to go to the death row unit at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana, where Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was put to death and more than 50 other people are awaiting execution, including Dr. Ronald Mikos, a Chicago podiatrist convicted of killing a former patient to stop her from testifying in an investigation of a Medicare fraud scheme

10 Reasons to Outsource Medical Billing - Part 3
6. Anticipate payer rule changes.
Avoid being caught flat-footed when payers' rules change. A good billing service is always aware of proposed and pending changes that can have an impact on the revenue cycle, especially technical changes that seldom hit the radar of a medical practice until reimbursements are impacted.
7. Access solid data analytics.
A billing service can help your practice identify what the practice is doing well and poorly, in terms of maximizing legitimate reimbursements. The service will identify bottlenecks in the flow of billing documentation and be able to teach providers and staff how to avoid errors that negatively impact claims. A really good billing service will also share information about alternative ways to code that result in more favorable reimbursements.
8. Know your accounts receivables.
Enjoy the benefit of knowing exactly where you stand in terms of receivables. Any service worth its salt will be able to tell you, at least monthly, the percentage of claims that are paid from the initial submission, how many are 30 days, 60 days, and 90 days outstanding, and which payers are most important to the practice. It's valuable information that an internal billing person almost never has the time to provide.

10 Requirements You Need in a Business Associate Agreement - Part 1
The HHS Office for Civil Rights in 2013 issued extensive guidance on handling business associate agreements under the HIPAA privacy and security rules. LockPath, vendor of a software platform to manage corporate governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance, has distilled the guidance down to 10 bullet points and four additional tips. Some requirements are commonly included in a business associate agreement, but others may not be:
1. Determine when and how the business associate is allowed to use or disclose PHI.
2. Require that the business associate will not use or disclose PHI other than what has been permitted by the contract or required by law.
3. Establish what safeguards will be put in place to prevent unauthorized PHI disclosure. This includes implementing HIPAA requirements surrounding electronic PHI.
4. Require the business associate to report to the covered entity any use or disclosure of PHI not covered by the contract, including incidents or breaches of unsecured PHI.
5. Ensure the business associate will disclose PHI as specified in the contract to satisfy a covered entity's obligation with respect to individuals' requests for copies of their PHI. PHI should be available for amendments as well.

From: Al Musella, DPM
I have no problem with requiring 300 surgical cases. That might be excessive, but it can't hurt to have that experience. However, I agree with Dr. Robbins and completely disagree with the breakdown of how many of each procedure are needed. I would prefer a switch to a regional approach like the orthopods use. Say 30 procedures must be performed on toes 2-5, 30 bunion procedures (of any type), 20 midfoot procedures, and 30 rearfoot procedures. The remaining 190 procedures can be any foot procedure.
The orthopods feel exposure to 5 "ankle and hind and midfoot arthoscopies" is enough. They specify about 400 cases are needed from general areas (like 200 "pediatric procedures", or 25 surgeries of the femor or tibia.) - and the remaining 600 can be anything.
By specifying the need for diversity among choice of procedure, the doctor is forced into selecting a procedure that might not be his first choice for a particular problem. That is bizarre. I would bet the orthopods never have to select a procedure because they have to make the numbers.
