NY Podiatrist Recommends Stretching and Strengthening Feet and Legs
If you're someone who stands all day, you probably already know the body strains this leads to that can eventually turn chronic. "Prolonged standing can result in health consequences such as backaches, muscle fatigue, and leg and foot cramps," explains Brad Schaeffer, DPM, board certified podiatrist at Central Park SOLE and star of TLC's My Feet Are Killing Me. "The added stress to our bodies due to long-term, prolonged standing can also result in arthritis and high blood pressure." That means taking care of your foot health can be beneficial for all other health avenues in the body.

Like any other part of your body, working out your feet can help strengthen them, which can help you avoid foot pain later on. "A great exercise for feet is walking barefoot on sand," suggests Dr. Schaeffer. "It's a great way to stretch and strengthen the feet and calves. Additional beneficial stretches are toe raises, toe points, and toe curls." If stretching doesn't seem to be helping and foot pain is chronic, it might be time to reach out to a professional.

Maryland Podiatrists Volunteer at Special Olympics
On June 24 and June 25, 2023, the Maryland Special Olympics were held at Towson University, in Towson, MD. Drs. Gene Mirkin, Haseeb Ahmad, Steven Chatlin, Alison D’Andelet, Reema Dua, and Enzo Leone screened over 130 athletes, making the podiatry screening one of the busiest stops during the weekend event.

At the 83rd Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA 2023), hosts Diana Isaacs, PharmD, and Natalie Bellini, DNP, recorded a special edition episode of Diabetes Dialogue: Technology, Therapeutics, & Real-World Perspectives. It included an episode with Gary Rothenberg, DPM, a podiatrist and assistant professor of internal medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Diabetes at the University of Michigan. He is also the director of Medical Affairs with Podimetrics, a virtual care management and technology company headquartered in Boston, MA. Podimetrics, the creator of the SmartMat, offers integrated clinical and patient support services that can help save the limbs and lives of complex patients living with diabetes.

During the episode, Dr. Rothenberg discussed the importance of educating patients and clinicians on the risks posed by foot ulcers in people with diabetes as well as how social determinants of health influence the risk of foot ulcers. In addition, Rothenberg also served as a panelist for a session on the use of artificial intelligence in diabetes foot disease during his time at ADA 2023.

Common Pitfalls in a Doctor's First Year in Practice
Congratulations for making it through medical school and residency, and even perhaps a fellowship, and now you are ready for your first or second job out of school. Here are some areas that trip up new doctors the most.
2B. Pay attention to the fraud and abuse statutes.
Be careful with relationships you have with labs, medical director agreements, and any revenue sharing arrangements. Don’t just share space or resources with anyone to whom you refer patients. There are many well-meaning physicians sucked into fraudulent schemes disguised as legitimate business deals. Usually, the physicians involved were approached by a sophisticated and well-appointed company with a “shiny” proposal and big law firm opinion of support, assuring doctors that everyone else is joining or signing up. Please never believe these assurances. Just remember this: Ask questions and get your lawyer to review it. It’s money well spent to not have to unwind an illegal deal.

Query: Unna Boot Coding
I have a Medicare patient with chronic leg edema and venous stasis dermatitis on the legs. I applied an Unna’s boot on the left lower extremity. I’m wondering how best to code. Are there any additional modifiers I should be using other than LT for left leg? Finally, what is the frequency these boots may be re-applied? It has been a while since I have had to bill this particular item, and I want to make sure I’m in keeping up with proper protocol.

Response: Unna boot coding is straightforward because it has its own code, CPT 29580. And yes, either RT or LT, or if bilateral -50 modifiers.
The diagnosis code options based on your description are:
I83.11 Varicose veins of right lower extremity with inflammation
I83.12 Varicose veins of left lower extremity with inflammation
I did a NGS Medicare search and nothing came up to limit the use with an LCD/LCA on this CPT code.

Generally, the medial malleolus does not begin to ossify until the seventh year. The differential diagnosis ranges from calcaneal valgus of infancy to occult tarsal coalition to any number of causes for chronic, progressive, collapsing foot deformity, such as ligamentous, laxity and associated disorders, compensating, deformities, and so forth.
Honestly, if you were asking such a question, it would be best that you refer the care of this patient for evaluation to those with more experience in the treatment of pediatric deformities of the foot.

Not everyone has the ability to have a concierge practice or a holistic practice that does not participate in any insurance plans. The reason for this is very simple. If someone practices in a relatively low income area, a doctor would go broke offering this type of service, as no one has the ability to pay for these services no matter how great or wonderful they are. So not everyone can just do this.
