AT THE COLLEGES |
NYCPM Holds First Poster Day
The posters displayed in the Bruce Frankel Conference Center on June 11 seemed to number far more than 19 -- they formed an impressive, room-filling circle of information and illustration on this first-ever Poster Day. According to Eileen Chusid, PhD, the faculty submitted a list of topics from which students in this class selected (thus choosing both topic and faculty member). Each 2019 student joined a research group and spent time investigating a research project; the posters are the result of this research and collaboration.

Students at NYCPM Poster Day |
The guest speaker and judge was D. Scot Malay, DPM, Director of Podiatric Research at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA, and editor of the Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery. In his guest lecture, Dr. Malay described the research qualities and methods that make research important and valuable for different kinds of studies. He talked about the need to determine statistical values and variances to ensure statistical significance.

What You Eat Affects Your Feet: OH Podiatrist
A podiatrist may not be the first doctor you think of when it comes to getting advice on what to eat and what to avoid in a healthy diet. But maybe it should be. Randall Thomas, DPM is a podiatrist at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital. He may seem like an unlikely source for tips on healthy eating but he sees plenty of patients whose problems are the result of an unhealthy diet.
|
Dr. Randall Thomas |
"I see, multiple times a day in my office, young kids with progressive foot problems we used to not see until people are in their 20s," Dr. Thomas said. "A lot of that has to do with childhood obesity. Lack of flexibility, lack of exercise, more sedentary lifestyles...Some of the anti-inflammatory-based diets have made a huge difference in my patient population," Dr. Thomas said. "Going into the more healthy, plant-based whole food diet... Kinda staying on the periphery of the grocery store, not buying anything in a box. I've seen it help a lot in some of my folks with chronic arthritis, gouty arthritis, and more systemic problems."

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
Toe Cramps Can be Caused by Tight Shoes: KS Podiatrist
You know that strange thing when your toes start twitching and involuntarily twisting around each other? Or when you wake up in the middle of the night with your foot flexed, immovable, and shooting with pain? What is with those cramps? Toe cramps frequently stem from unnecessary strain or restricted blood flow from tight-fitting shoes. If you can't wiggle your toes or your toes start to tingle after you've put on your shoes, they're too tight.
|
Dr. Phyllis Ragley |
The path to fewer painful spasms begins with your shoes, says Phyllis Ragley, DPM, a podiatrist in Lawrence, Kansas. "It's crucial to find a pair that's right for your body's unique mechanics." Dr. Ragley advises choosing a shoe that fits your arch and is neither too stiff nor too flexible.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Guaranteed Ways to Get Sued - Part 5
5. Technology woes - Technology has also shifted the risk picture. It streamlined many historically time-intensive tasks, but it has also created opportunities for new types of mistakes. The copy-and-paste function is a good example. Diane C. Fernald, RN, JD, vice president of education and consulting services at Med-IQ, headquartered in Baltimore, acknowledges it makes data entry quick and easy but warns it can be a detriment if it’s used without sufficient attention to detail. Erroneous information can easily be added and then inadvertently perpetuated within the patient file, for example, potentially planting the seeds of a lawsuit down the road. “The other providers who are looking at the record see the bad information instead of what’s really going on, and then decisions are made on inappropriate data,” Fernald explains.

QUERIES (MEDICAL/LEGAL) |
Query: Charging Insurance Companies for Medical Records
There was recent dialogue about charging insurance companies for medical records. Is there any clarification as to whether we can or can’t charge for our time? With EHR, there is no printing of records, so any copying fee is out. Is this a state to state issue? I have searched but found no information specific to charging insurance companies.
David L. Kahan, DPM, Sacramento, CA
Editor's Response: PM News does not supply legal advice. You are correct in assuming that how much you can charge varies from state to state. Click here to check on the rules in your state. Unfortunately, there are no independent provisions to compensate for the labor involved in copying records. These statutory fees generally incorporate all aspects of copying records.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MIPS) |
RE: MIPS Qualifications
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
Yesterday, my EHR vendor contacted me and stated that I was no longer eligible to participate in MIPS since I did not meet the minimum Medicare annual charge qualification which is now $90,000 instead of $30,000 for an individual physician. This information was obtained by CMS concurring with Medicare and Railroad Medicare actual collected revenues based on my individual NPI number for my practice from Sept 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017. Any Medicare provider can research and see this same type data on the CMS MPP website.
Last year, I successfully scored 90/100 for 2017 for MIPS participation. I believe that I will receive an incentive for doing so. But, I believe this will be the last time that...
Editor's note: Dr. Borreggine's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
I was sorry to hear about Larry's passing. He was a very strong political leader for podiatric medicine, not only as past president of the APMA, but he was very active in many of the related organizations and certainly very active on the political scene. He was a real gentleman and he will be missed in this profession.
Steve Berlin, DPM
