It's Important to Have Feet Checked for Cancer: APMA President

Walking on the beach, frolicking in the surf, participating in sports, strolling through a theme park while on vacation - your feet will carry you through a lot of fun this summer. But can paying attention to them help you avoid the most common form of cancer in America? Possibly, experts say.

Dr. Joseph Caporusso

"While skin cancers typically appear on areas of sun-exposed skin like the face, arms, and hands, they can also occur on areas that get much less sun, such as the feet," says Dr. Joseph Caporusso, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association. "With flip-flops and sandals being common summer foot attire, more Americans than ever are exposing their feet to the sun's potential harmful rays. It's important for everyone to have their feet checked regularly by today's podiatrist for any signs or symptoms of skin cancer."

It's the second championship for Amber who made the final after finishing fifth in her heat in Chanberry, near Lyon, France, but she's going to Switzerland as team manager of the New Zealand team at the World University Championship.

Seventh Podiatric Medical Mission to Nicaragua a Success

The seventh podiatric medical mission to Chinandega, Nicaragua – a joint effort of Athens Podiatry Group, 20/20 Imaging Company, and Rotary International District 6400 – was recently completed. More than 100 patients without access to advanced medical care were evaluated, and 29 surgeries were performed.

Drs. Vicki Anton Athens and James Hill

The medical mission was organized by Dr. Vicki Anton Athens and Dr. James Hill of Athens Podiatry Group, a medical practice that has been serving Michigan residents for more than 25 years. The surgeries included procedures for club foot, amputations, and ankle fractures. Athens Podiatry Group was joined in this mission by Rotary International District 6400 of Michigan, which initiated the program.

Fewer Malpractice Claims When Docs Use EHRs: Study

A group of Massachusetts physicians saw a dramatic drop in malpractice claims after implementing electronic health-record systems, according to a research letter published by the Archives of Internal Medicine. Researchers from Harvard-affiliated organizations—including the Harvard Pilgrim health plan and Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates—merged closed claims data from a Massachusetts malpractice insurer for the years 1995 to 2007, with data from a random sample of physicians surveyed in 2005 and 2007. Researchers said 275 doctors were surveyed in 2005, and 189 were surveyed in both years. Among the latter group, just over 14% reported having been sued at least once.

The study found 51 unique malpractice claims, with 49 reported before EHR implementation and only two after. Thirteen of the pre-EHR claims resulted in payments, while the two identified as occurring post-implementation did not. General surgeons accounted for 13 (27%) of the pre-adoption claims, while internists and orthopedic surgeons each had one of the post-adoption claims.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Overcome Procrastination

Overcome procrastination on a task that keeps slipping to the end of your to-do list. Instead of lamenting that you aren’t completing it, delegate that task to one of your staff members. Another option: Swap tasks with a colleague.

RE: Fosamax and Neuropathy? (Norm Wortzman, DPM)
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

I am not aware of any direct correlation between Fosamax and neuropathy, but people are placed on Fosamax for osteoporosis, and many people with osteoporosis may have Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency can cause neuropathy. You might want to check Vitamin D levels.

RE: NY Assembly Passes Expansion of Scope of Practice Law (Jeffrey Kass, DPM)
From: Fred J. DeLucia, DPM

I find it a tremendous success as well as an inspiring message what our state association has achieved through their tireless perseverance, optimism, and foresight. Personally, I have been hearing the overwhelming negativity from so many practitioners over so many years (ever since I was a student) that our state shall never see an expanded (rather, a 'corrected') scope come to pass - "it will never happen" - they used to say.

To all those who believed this, I hope your outlook has been changed on a great many things. A glass is either half full or half empty, and looking at it half empty helps...

RE: NY Assembly Passes Expansion of Scope of Practice Law (Jeffrey Kass, DPM)
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

I tend to agree with Dr. Kass, that on first look, the recently passed scope of practice bill potentially creates a two-tier licensing structure for podiatrists in NYS. At first look, it may be seen as unfair to the vast majority of DPM's who never had an opportunity to obtain board certification, or to be trained in a two or three year residency.

It also may seem unfair to many who have achieved surgical board certification after a one-year residency or alternative method. Many of the latter categories are actually the majority of us who teach and are attending podiatrists in two- and three-year residency programs (myself included). This thought process, however, is very short-sighted.

Without some tangible change in the scope of practice, ...

RE: NY Assembly Passes Expansion of Scope of Practice Law
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH

It is long overdue for podiatric physicians in New York State who are properly trained to have the right to perform surgery to treat problems people have affecting their ankle. The requirement that they hold board certification in rear foot surgery is not overly restrictive and is actually a model that other physicians should begin to follow. Both the New York State Legislature and those podiatric physicians who have supported it should be given credit.

While physicians such as psychiatrists, radiologists, and pathologists have an unrestricted license to practice medicine, those practitioners are certainly not qualified to perform any kind of surgery (in this case, thank G-d for the threat of being accused of malpractice and not being able to acquire hospital privileges to do so).

Giving anyone an unrestricted license is an anachronism, whether that person holds an MD, DO, or DPM. While an unrestricted license to practice was appropriate 60 years ago, it is not so today. Rather than be defensive, other branches of medicine should follow the model set by of our profession. No physician should hold an unrestricted license.

RE: Another Set of Foot Orthotics (Paul Keselman, DPM)
From: Simon Young, DPM

Contact the insurance carrier and get the devices pre-authorized. Usually, patients are allowed a new pair every 3 years. I agree that the patient should be seen and evaluated. Patients should not dictate their course of treatment; the practitioner should.
