PODIATRIC EDUCATION AND LICENSING

California Physicians, Podiatrists Pursue Collaboration on Education

In a rare collaboration, California podiatrists and physicians are sitting down together to evaluate podiatric training in the state. The goal: Make education offered at the state's two podiatric schools on par with medical schools. "It's the biggest story to happen in podiatry in 50 years," said Barry Block, DPM, editor of Podiatry Management, a national business and practice management magazine for the profession.

Drs. Barry Block and Jon Hultman

As licensed physicians and surgeons, podiatrists would have unrestricted medical licenses and be able to practice nationwide within their education and training, like any other physician specialty, said CPMA Executive Director Jon Hultman, DPM. For now, podiatrists' scope of practice is limited by varying rules in different states. "We deserve to be under the same umbrella," Block said. "The biggest problem is the medical community is not familiar with how educated we are and how well-trained podiatrists are today."

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS

NY Podiatrist Discusses Shoe Selection

Those high heels may make your legs look great, but walking in them is doing nothing to help your feet. Dr. Tejas Pandya, CEO and owner of Capital District Podiatry in Troy, says flats and shoes with chunkier heels, like clogs, can help alleviate the pain. Flip-flops are okay in moderation -- wearing them for more than a couple of hours a day can cause pain along the arch of the foot because of the shoes' lack of support.

Dr.Tejas Pandya

Because some flat shoes have bad arch support, Pandya recommends getting over-the-counter insoles. If you bring along wedges or chunky heels, limit their height to three inches, he says.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

FL Podiatrist Supports Congressman's Award

Sarasota Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-13) was awarded the “Spirit of Enterprise” Award by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for his strong record on job creation and pro-growth policies. “I am a businessman, not a politician,” said Buchanan. “I understand that for businesses to grow and create jobs, we need lower taxes, less government, and less litigation.”

Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-13) and Dr. Chet Evans

Dr. Chet Evans, vice president for medical education and program development at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (LECOM’s) Bradenton campus was present at the awards ceremony. “Congressman Buchanan plays a key role in the healthcare reform process and is a dynamic supporter of his community and constituents.” said Evans. “This award is well-deserved.”

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters.

Bret Ribotsky: How do you suggest that someone interested in starting a sports medicine practice get started?

Dr. Richard Bouche`

Richard Bouche’: Get to know the local high school coaches and those at the local college. If you can overcome the barrier of really trying to sell yourself, you can be successful. You can join the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine and leverage this membership for credibility, so it shows a commitment on your behalf. Remember, it is often volunteer work and your assistance to the trainer, coach, or other physician that paves your way to success.

Dr. John Dimaggio

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday Night at 9 PM (EST). The next segment will feature podiatric forensic expert Dr. John DiMaggio . You can register for this event by clicking here

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Win Back Unhappy Patients

In a perfect world, all your patients will be happy and loyal. In reality, you are likely to run into problems now and again. If you sense that a patient has cooled to you, don’t beat around the bush to find out why. Ask point-blank; for example:

  •  “You haven't come in for your regular diabetic foot exam. We missed you. Have we dropped the ball somehow?”

Bottom line: If something is wrong, you will not know about it unless you ask.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)

RE: Where Is Organized Medicine? (Arden Smith, DPM)
From: Paul Hilbert, DPM,  Paul Kruper, DPM

Our profession is not "FEET"!! Our profession is "PEOPLE" who happen to have problems with their feet!

Paul Hilbert, DPM, Navarre, FL, coastalp@bellsouth.net

'Organized Medicine' is an oxymoron. HMO's discovered years ago that doctor A would contract for $1 less than doctor B who would contract for $1 less than doctor C and so on....We were soon paying the HMO to see the patients. HMO execs became rich and doctors became the educated middle class. Sadly, that exploitable weakness will continue because docs undervalue their services and accept pennies just to keep the patient. In this new financial battleground, doctors on salary have the best of all worlds. Most doctors are better off when they allow a business-minded employer to place a value on their services and hold the line with the HMOs.

RE: eRx
From: Brian Kashan, DPM

Please be aware that it is not the electronic Rx you do, but your billing of it, G8553, to Medicare, that quantifies your doing it. If you did not bill the G8553 code, you can do 1000 Rxs and not get credit.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP - PART 1

RE: Who Says Accidents Don’t Take Place in the OR?
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

We all take safety for granted in our workplaces. Recently, during the performance of a procedure in a teaching facilities OR, the scrub nurse dropped a scalpel onto the floor. The circulator nurse shot this photo of the scalpel just after it impaled the floor. In thirty years or so of practice, I’ve seen my share of instruments fall on the floor. But this scalpel had the best aim of all!

Scalpel Impaled into OR Floor

Fortunately, no one's foot was directly underneath (including mine) or there would have been two patients requiring surgery.
