PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
IN Podiatrist Discusses Who Should Run in Minimalist Shoes
“Generally, the runners who do well with minimalist shoes are those who are forefoot strikers — meaning they keep their weight in the forefoot and land on the ball of their foot — and high-arch forefoot strikers,” says Alex Kor, DPM, a podiatrist at Witham Health Services in Lebanon, Indiana, and fellow of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine.
|
Dr. Alex Kor |
Minimalist running shoes are also a good choice for runners with a neutral gait. However, heel strikers and those who overpronate (roll their feet inward) and underpronate (roll their feet to the outer edges) are probably better off steering clear of minimalist running shoes, Dr. Kor says.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Vitamin Deficiency Can Cause Heel Fissures: UK Podiatrist
Although a good soak, pumice, and moisturize will do your feet the world of good, interestingly the foods you eat can also play a big role in the state of your feet. Expert podiatrist Dina Gohil says: “Your feet, just like any other part of your body, contain bones, muscles, ligaments, and blood vessels, so it’s important we take care of them.”
|
Dina Gohill |
She adds that an overall vitamin deficiency can actually be one of the many common causes of cracked heels, known as fissures, which can be painless and superficial or deep and very painful. It’s important to make sure you are eating a well-balanced diet and getting the right nutrition, as what you eat will affect your whole body, including your feet.

ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCUIT |
NM Podiatrist Teaches Surgical Course in Jordan
Gerit Mulder, DPM, PhD, MS, was recently invited to Amman, Jordan to lecture and teach clinical and surgical skills at the National Center for Diabetes (NCD). He also lectured on the use of single application biological matrices for slow and non-healing wounds. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has a very high number of diabetics and diabetes-related amputations, and the two days of lectures and assisted clinical surgeries were greatly appreciated for the high level of educational information. Dr. Mulder has been invited back to present a 5-day course on treatment of diabetics, diabetic surgery, as well as implementation and opening of wound clinics.
|
Dr. Gerit Mulder |
Dr. Mulder is very well respected and internationally recognized for his numerous presentations, research, and assistance with the development of wound clinics across the globe over the last three decades... all related to the treatment of chronic wounds. Dr. Mulder is currently a staff physician and manager of clinical research at the Christus St. Vincent Medical Center Wound and Hyperbaric Center, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Tips to Get a Raise from Your Payers
Negotiating a successful payer contract increase is possible for those willing to craft a thoughtful, data-driven argument for why they deserve more money.
5. Identify you voloume of active patients
This is the number of unique patients you’ve seen in the past two years, Andrew Harding, co-founder and vice president of customer success at Rivet says. Remind the payer that if you go out-of-network, the payer will need to notify patients that their designated primary care physician is no longer in-network, which potentially will make patients unhappy about having to switch physicians. “It’s a lot of administrative headaches for payers and for patients,” Harding says.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: Two Tales from the Same Hospital
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
Here are two true stories from the same hospital.
In the 1980s, we were starting a podiatry residency in Deaconess Hospital. At the time, it was considered the most “conservative” Hospital in St. Louis, had a large and old orthopedic presence, and board certification in all specialties was required for membership. I remember a vascular surgeon laughing in my face when I told him that we would be building a podiatry department and residency there. “Jacobs, they won’t even let me on staff there,” he told me.
When the program started, in addition to orthopedics, internal medicine which had an ACGME program there, was the biggest obstacle to referrals. The leader of the opposition was a mean and nasty but brilliant ID doctor. He was generally acknowledged as the best in...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
RE: The Atheists and The Podiatrist
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM
Years ago, in the early 2000s, I attended a Skeptic’s Society Seminar that invited a group of interesting speakers. Among them were some well-known cosmologists, other scientists, and members of the Templeton Foundation which funds meetings between atheists and religious speakers. This particular meeting was hugely interesting and consequential. Dr. Michael Shermer, PhD. is the founder of the Skeptic’s Society. I met him there.
He is a very nice person with what he regards as an honest perception of reality. I would characterize him as “gracious.” At the time, I was a member of the Skeptic’s Society...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
In the June/July issue of Podiatry Management on page 66, in the article entitled "Add-on Codes", L2820 and L2280 were both defined as an "Addition to Lower Extremity, molded inner boot".
The correction is that L2820 should have been defined as "Addition to Lower Extremity, Soft Tissue Interface for molded plastic, below knee section". L2280 was correctly defined as Addition to Lower Extremity, molded inner boot".
I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Oceanside, NY
