NY Podiatrist Recommends Alternatives to Flip-Flops

"Most flip-flops don't have adequate arch support, cushioning, or shock absorption," says Manhattan-based foot doctor Jacqueline Sutera, DPM. Wearing them all summer, every summer could lead to pinched foot nerves, heel pain, tendinitis, and strained arches. If you can't quit flops entirely, buy ones that have at least a three-quarter-inch semi-cushioned sole and built-in arch support.

Dr. Jacqueline Sutera

Even better, go for a strappy sandal; simple thongs force your toes into an unhealthy clenched position when you walk, encouraging hammertoe growth. Or try cute, beachy wedges (three inches high or less), which offer more support in just about every foot area and help distribute your body weight more evenly.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

IL Podiatrist Inducted into 2011 Distinguished Alumni Society

The five newest members of Lake Land College Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Society have very different career paths that have taken them all over the state and nation. Dr. John Killough is a self-employed podiatrist. While at Lake Land, he majored in pre-medicine. Killough initially enrolled at the college with the intent of pursuing journalism. However, after taking one emergency medical technician course, he quickly discovered his passion resided in the medical field.

Dr. John Killough

Killough credited the college’s faculty for helping him find his path and transform into the individual he needed to be to succeed. “The solid foundation I received at Lake Land College successfully prepared me to finish my undergraduate program as well as my doctorate program,” Killough said. “Lake Land helped me feel intellectually and socially equipped to continue my academic pursuits.”

PM JURY VERDICT REPORTER

RE: Alleged Unneccesary Surgery (New Jersey)

Facts: On Nov. 17, 2006, plaintiff Gerald Dorsey underwent surgery on his right foot, performed by defendant podiatrist. The surgery sought to address complaints of right foot pain and decreased range of motion. Following the surgery and an appropriate recuperation period, Dorsey claimed continued foot pain and discomfort that he expected would have been alleviated by the surgery. He presented to another podiatrist who eventually performed two additional “corrective” surgeries.

Plaintiff's counsel alleged that the initial surgery Dorsey underwent was improper and unnecessary under the circumstances and a deviation from the standard of care. Dorsey alleged that...

Result: defendant's verdict ($0)

Plaintiff's expert: Lawrence G. Lazar, DPM; Washington, DC
Defendant's expert: Harold D. Schoenhaus, Philadelphia, PA

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF TE DAY

 Speaking Strategies

Public speaking can be an intimidating prospect. However, two key practices will calm your nerves and ensure your success. Remember these basics:
  • Slow down. Nervousness can lead you to speak way too fast. Consciously slow down your speaking rate and add pauses around important points to emphasize them.
  • Make eye contact.  Briefly connect with everyone in the room. Do not focus all your attention on the decision-maker or the most senior person in the room. Other people listening to you may have great influence, so work to engage everyone in the room.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Wart Peel (Howard Bonenberger, DPM)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

Wart peel is basically a compound containing 5-Fluro-uricil and Sal acid. Both are indicated in the treatment of warts. We have used Wart Peel in our practice in cases where more traditional methods such as Sal acid applications and weekly debridements  have not been successful. In each case, Wart Peel worked. Could it have been that after many weeks of debridement and applications of over the counter Sal acid, the patients' immune systems were ready to fight off the wart and any method would have worked? Possibly, but we will never know. In any case, the patients were happy. The cost is close to one hundred dollars, and the patients pay the compounding pharmacy directly. I recommend that Wart Peel be part of our armamentarium in the treatment of verrucae.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2

RE: Where is Organized Medicine?
From: Arden Smith, DPM

Almost every time I pick up a newspaper, or turn on the TV, or the radio, I hear unions defending their members "right" to earn a "fair" wage. It could be the UFT, the PBA, the firefighters, 1199, etc. On the high end, the trial lawyers, professional athletes, even investment bankers defend their "right" to earn what they earn. Most often, the ads, or the "placed" articles are beyond aggressive.

What determines a "fair" wage? I guess it would be based on years of training, the skill level needed for the task, demand for the service vs. supply, overhead expense involved, and the level of personal sacrifice involved [none of my kids' little league teams were ever coached by a doctor].

In the doctors lounge [of a large teaching hospital in an affluent area] I hear high profile docs saying...

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (EHR)

RE: EHR and Meaningful Use
From: Philip E. Larkins, DPM

After many frustrating hours of pouring over multiple documents from CMS, the National Committee for Quality Assurance, and other sources like PQRI, I have come to the conclusion that podiatrists should not even be considered an "eligible professional" when considering meaningful use.

I have determined exactly one Clinical Quality Measure Set (a required reporting core topic) that even pertains to a podiatrist's scope of practice. This measure set is NQF 0056, Diabetes: Foot Exams.

According to the CMS website...
