Healing Powers of Placenta Help Prevent Limb Loss: MA Podiatrist
A healthy baby is born in Memphis, Tennessee, and the placenta that allowed it to prosper in its mother’s womb is not disposed of as medical waste, but instead recovered in the delivery room and later used to prevent a 54-year-old Richard Thibeault from losing his left foot or worse yet, his whole left leg. “We call it the circle of life,” said Peg Manochi, a certified wound care nurse and clinical sales specialist for Derma Sciences, the company that connects Tennessee babies with Massachusetts diabetics.

Once in the hands of healthcare facilities, like the Limb Preservation Center, “the membrane begins working right away to enhance the re-growth of the patient’s own tissue,” said Dr. Lorraine Loretz, a nurse practitioner/podiatrist who applies the tissue to the wound. Promoting new blood vessels that are fundamental to healing leg and foot ulcers, the tissue is absorbed into the wound bed. “It’s re-applied, usually at two-week intervals, depending upon the re-growth rate of response,” she added. In Thibeault’s case, it took only about a month to heal his foot.

CPME Retains Minimum 300 Surgical Cases for Residents
The Council on Podiatric Medical Education’s new residency standards (CPME Documents 320 and 330) have been published, following a six-month comment period from the podiatric community. The standards retained, unchanged, the 300 surgical cases requirements for residents. An earlier proposed draft suggested two levels of surgical cases. Both ACFAS and the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery submitted comments to CPME urging that no changes be made to the surgical cases requirement.
|
|
Dr. Richard Derner |
“Although quantitative assessment is not the optimum measure of a resident’s progress, these numbers help standardize the process,” said ACFAS President Richard Derner, DPM, FACFAS. “We applaud CPME’s decision to maintain the 300 minimum surgical case requirement.”

The Type of High Heel You Wear Matters: NY Podiatrist
Picking out heels is one situation in which chunkier is actually preferable. "The thinner the heel, the less stable it is," says Dr. Emily Splichal, a New York City podiatrist and creator of a high heel workout called Catwalk Confidence. "A chunkier heel provides more surface area and greater stability."
|
|
Dr. Emily Splichal |
You might think choosing a shoe with a platform under the toe as well as a heel is a safe bet, but according to Splichal, that platform just disconnects you even more from contact with the ground—meaning your feet get less sensory information and are less able to maintain stability while walking.

House Votes to Kill Health Law's Independent Payment Advisory Board
The House voted Tuesday to kill a federal panel that is supposed to find ways to curb Medicare spending, as Republicans ignored a veto threat and leveled their latest blow at President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul.
Members of the Independent Payment Advisory Board have never been appointed, and the panel has never recommended savings from Medicare, the $600-billion-a-year healthcare program for the elderly.

Philips Unveils Lumify, app-based Ultrasound for Smart Devices
Add ultrasound imaging to the list of things you can now do directly from your phone. With Lumify, Royal Philips has entered the next frontier in portable ultrasound: app-based. That means the only hardware required is a commercial tablet – Android only, for now – and a transducer that plugs into the tablet or smartphone's port.
|
|
Lumify app-based ultrasound |
The company described Lumify as “An entirely new way of delivering ultrasound technology” in a statement. It will be targeted toward critical care, emergency room, sports medicine, podiatry, and bedside ultrasound practitioners. Hamlin said the cloud-enabled technology is “highly connected” and can interface easily with hospital PACS and other archiving systems.

House Appropriators Ask CMS To Help Physicians Make ICD-10 Transition
Congressional Quarterly reports that House appropriators “asked the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to help doctors and hospitals confront two of their biggest challenges; the looming implementation of new ICD-10 medical billing codes and disputes with contractors hired to audit hospital claims.”
The requests accompany the fiscal 2016 Labor-HHS-Education spending bill, which the House Appropriations Committee will mark up today. According to the article, lawmakers in their report urged HHS Secretary Burwell to work with providers to develop a hardship exemption for those practices that would be harmed by the ICD-10 transition.

Bill Aims to Free ASC Docs from Some Meaningful-Use Rules
The Senate Finance Committee began marking up a bill meant to adjust meaningful-use requirements for physicians using ambulatory surgery centers. The Electronic Health Fairness Act is bipartisan legislation that would adjust meaningful-use requirements of the federal electronic health-record incentive payment program and protect providers who use ASCs from possible Medicare reimbursement penalties.
The bill being considered by the Senate Finance Committee today “excludes ASC services from being counted toward the 50% meaningful-use eligibility threshold” until tested and certified EHRs are available for ASCs. The exclusion would end three years after the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology creates standards for EHRs in ASCs.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY | |
10 Reasons to Outsource Medical Billing - Part 1
Here are some of the benefits that can be achieved with outsourcing billing:
1. Free up office space.
If the billing is outsourced, the biller does not need a place to sit, and the billing records are somewhere else.
2. Make some employee turnover irrelevant.
Make employee turnover in the billing department someone else's problem. Unless your practice is big enough to justify a billing department, with a set of employees with varying skills and levels of sophistication, high turnover is almost inevitable. Some billing work can be mind-numbingly dull and some requires sophisticated skills in analysis, synthesis, and communication. Very few people capable of these higher-level requirements will be satisfied for long with dull routine work.
3. Cut down on incoming phone calls.
Office staff is relieved of calls that go directly to the billing service. The biggest benefit, however, is the calls that are never made because billing and claims errors are more often avoided in the first place.

From: Wenjay Sung, DPM
It's a sad day when a giant in so many podiatric professional lives passes away too soon. Dr. William Todd was one of the easiest men to get along with and one who loved a good joke. He was gracious enough to let me, a nobody student, spend time with him and witness what an amazing person should aspire to be. My condolences to his family and close friends.
