MI Podiatrist Discusses Common Causes of Heel Pain
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "An appropriate question is why so many people have pain from the bottom of the heel. Discomfort from this region of the body leads to over a million medical visits per year, a significant number. And an inability to bear weight comfortably on the heel interferes with ambulation, standing, and numerous activities that are part of normal, all-important activities of daily living. Many assume any pain from the area must be due to the ubiquitous condition that is plantar fasciitis. Indeed, this is by far the most common reason."
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"But it could be dangerous to assume that all heel pain is due to fasciitis. As a general comment, treating the wrong problem can result in significant complications and the treatment is less likely to lead to relief. Likely, the next most common pathology would be a pinched nerve. Indeed, you can develop these common problems even here at the bottom of the heel, although it’s really more of a trapping of the nerve (hence the more technically appropriate term “nerve entrapment”). Differentiating between fasciitis and an entrapment in the region can be challenging, even to an experienced practitioner," says Dr. McLean.

Carbon-Plated Running Shoes Not for Everyone: VA Podiatrist
Once reserved for elite runners, the best carbon-plated running shoes are becoming increasingly popular for anyone trying to shave a few seconds—or, if you’re lucky, a few minutes—off your PR. The carbon-plated shoes that are typically worn for marathons (a.k.a. super shoes) also have a high stack of responsive, bouncy foam, which works with the carbon plate for maximum energy return and minimal muscle damage during long races.
|
Dr. Ben Pearl |
While carbon-plated shoes have the potential to make you faster, they aren’t a magical one-way ticket to running a Boston Qualifying marathon time, Ben Pearl, DPM, a podiatrist at Arlington Foot and Ankle in Virginia, tells SELF. Nor are they appropriate for all runners in all situations. But as anyone who has worn them can attest, carbon-plated shoes can be fun—and fast.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN SPORTS |
Singapore Podiatrist Wins National Cycling Championship
In a photo finish for the ages, Yeo Boon Kiak claimed another national title. In what can only be described as a masterclass in grit, timing, and tactical brilliance, Yeo Boon Kiak of RS Factor Race Team once again proved why he is a true legend of Singaporean cycling.
|
Yeo Boon Kiak (photo: Hana Basir) |
It was a finish befitting of the prestige of the event — Singapore’s premier cycling championship, drawing the nation’s fastest wheels to the tropical yet punishing Bintan Island circuit. But for all the youthful exuberance in the peloton, it was the seasoned 37-year-old podiatrist, father of two, part-time cyclist, and full-time mentor who emerged victorious once more.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Tips to Keep Patients Engaged Between Visits
It's important to note that engagement efforts don't have to bust the budget. Most tactics rely on tools you already own — your electronic health record's (EHR's) messaging templates, inexpensive survey apps, a smartphone camera, and five minutes of staff time.
4. Host brief virtual Q&A sessions.
Hold monthly 15-20 minute virtual town halls on topics like heel pain or diabetic foot care. These sessions can build trust, encourage question-asking and strengthen relationships — actions shown to boost patient satisfaction and long-term engagement.

QUERIES (DEA) |
Query: Mate Training
My DEA license renews July 31. I need to complete the 8 hours of opioid education requirement.
I have contacted our state board (KY) who didn't have any information. I sent an email to the DEA asking for guidance without response. Is there a specific MATE training for podiatry? Does any online MATE training suffice?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR) |
From Gary S Smith, DPM
I have had ModMed for 8 months. There is a difference between EMRs today. Some are better suited for a Corp. or big practice and some for solo or small group. I think ModMed is very good for a large practice. It creates a bill at the end of the visit and does a good job, but the attending has to review and edit. You can't just dictate if you're in a hurry because it won't generate a bill if you don't do a diagnosis and chart flow. It is time-consuming and when you are adding clicks and editing to bill appropriately, you are doing your billing person's job for them.
The biggest issue I have with it is that it does not generate a day sheet report. You have no idea if claims were edited, deleted, or cash deposits, etc. There is no AR report like with Sammy or Cerner. You have to create one yourself and it is complicated and time-consuming. It does not generate a monthly practice analysis like Cerner or Sammy either. You have to self-create reports on each parameter and once you get it, you can't print it.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) |
From: Steven Finer, DPM, Kenneth L Hatch, DPM
I too was at PCPM in the 1970s. I personally never heard or witnessed any improprieties. I came into contact with many clinicians of the old school. I learned many basic tools such as strapping , padding, and the Budin splinting. I also learned casting techniques. We were taught orthotic construction. I used these basic techniques for many years in my practice.
Steven Finer, DPM, Philadelphia, PA
I also graduated from PCPM in 1975. I also was NOT aware of any guidance counselor services available to us students. I find the comment that Dr. Kansky referred to as also very hard to believe.
Kenneth L Hatch, DPM, Annapolis, MD

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) |
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH
Each component society of the APMA organization needs to urgently prioritize a committee to send reps out to each college and possibly high schools to get the podiatry message out. By doing this very simple task, we could easily fill each school with qualified students. The APMA needs to lead off on this activity immediately.
