NYCPM’s Faculty and Students Attend Endovascular Symposium at ISMMS
The entire pre-clinical and clinical faculty and student body of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine attended the Endovascular Symposium, which is part of the 18th Annual Complex Coronary Valvular and Vascular Cases Symposium (ISMMS) sponsored by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, on June 18, 2015 in New York City. Experts from around the world spoke about state-of-the-art endovascular techniques used to restore circulation to the lower extremity.

Dr. Michael Trepal lecturing at Endovascular Symposium |
The endovascular section was chaired by Prakash Krishnan, MD, who is a renowned interventional cardiologist specializing in peripheral arterial disease at Mount Sinai, director of the lab there, and who also consults for the Foot Center of New York. Highlights of the meeting included live cases from the cath lab at Mt. Sinai, as well as from University Hospital in Leipzig, Germany and from the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute in Kingsport, TN. NYCPM’s VP for Academic Affairs and Dean, Michael J. Trepal, DPM, delivered a talk on the role of podiatric medicine in the detection of peripheral arterial disease.

NY Podiatrist Discusses Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis
How do you treat plantar fasciitis, a common cause of heel pain? "It depends on how long you've had it and how you got it," says podiatrist Dr. Ivan Herstik. "Sometimes, you can just stretch out your Achilles tendon and wear a night splint, which helps tremendously. It keeps the foot in a relaxed stretch so when you get up the morning, you don't have that foot pain."
|
|
Dr. Ivan Herstik |
What else works? "A lot of people need arch supports because their feet aren't 100 percent mechanically sound. There's also massage, using some sort of heel cushion, a cortisone injection, or physical therapy. We do shock wave therapy in the office, which is a low energy treatment to try to heal the tissue. And there are many new kinds of advanced treatments. Surgery is a last resort," says Dr. Herstik.

UK Podiatrist Debunks Skinny Jeans and High Heels as Hazards
Susanna Reid recently spoke to podiatrist Matthew Fitzpatrick who debunks skinny jeans and high heels as hazards. The interview comes as a woman in Australia spent 4 days in the hospital after squatting for long periods of time wearing skinny jeans, which led to blood being cut off and eventually swelling. Fitzpatrick said, "any amount of squatting or physical activity in skinny jeans can affect the nerves and end up in swelling due to that."

"With high heels, it's not the fact you are wearing high heels; it's the period of time you are wearing high heels for, which is bad for you...any sort of inflammation or irritation is bad for the nerves," said Fitzpatrick.

U.S. Facing Growing Shortage Of Primary Care Physicians
The Boston Globe (6/23,Karen Brown) reports in a front-page story about the growing shortage of primary doctors in America. The Association of American Medical Colleges “predicts a shortage of 45,000 primary care doctors by 2020.” Young doctors are being “drawn to lucrative specialties,” unwilling to replace veteran doctors who are leaving primary care “faster than they can be replaced.” According to Fitzhugh Mullan, a George Washington University policy researcher, less than one-third of doctors in the U.S. work in primary care today, “and that number is slipping.”
Educators are “redoubling their efforts to win over medical students,” but primary care doctors work “long hours” and make half of what specialists make, according to a 2015 survey by Medscape. The Globe notes some analysts argue that there is a “bias against primary care” that begins in medical schools, which encourage the “smartest people” to go into more competitive, prestigious fields.

Common HIPAA Misconceptions - Part 4
4. Requiring Unnecessary Patient Authorizations
While it's critical to comply with HIPAA's requirement that only those who have a valid reason to access a patient's medical record, such as treatment purposes, payment purposes, or healthcare operations, have access to it — some practices are misconstruing that rule, says Robert Tennant, senior policy adviser of government affairs for the Medical Group Management Association. "They demand patient authorization before they transfer data to another provider for treatment purposes," he says. "I understand why they do it, but it's one of those things that … can cause delays and confusion, and even some acrimony between the patient and the provider. If it's for treatment purposes specifically, you do not need a patient authorization."

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM
For many years, I have required all my medical assistants (5) to become ASPMA-certified after their first year of employment. It helps assure consistency in training so we have no inadvertent 'gaps.' It also increases the self-confidence and pride of my staff and delivers the message that I value them enough to pay for the training and testing and that continuing education is an expectation of my practice.
An additional "perk" in Indiana is that those who pass the exam are legally allowed to take radiographs of the feet without achieving a limited radiology license. In the past, I had to provide this training, which required me to pay a radiology technician to provide the 75 hours of didactic training required. It is a very worthwhile program.
