NY Podiatrist Declares Candidacy for President of the United States
Move over Donald Trump! You're not the only new contender in the crowded field of Republican candidates for president. Meet Dr. Michael Szczepanski, AKA Doc Mike, a Bay Ridge podiatrist and foot surgeon. The foot doctor says he has what it takes to give Hillary the boot!

Dr. Michael Szczepanski |
You might think it folly that a man who has never run for public office wants to run for the highest office in the land. But Szczepanski, 46, says he's serious. He has even filed the preliminary paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission to declare his candidacy.

ID Father and Son Team Run Podiatry Clinic Together
For Drs. Kert and Karson Howard, feet are the feat. The father and son team has been working together at the Ambulatory Food and Ankle Clinic since 2011. Kert started working as a podiatrist in Pocatello back in 1977, and his son followed suit four years ago.

An honor student named to the dean’s list multiple times, Tony was presented with the Dr. Morton M. Polokoff Award for outstanding proficiency in selection and application of chairside orthotics. Common HIPAA Misconceptions - Part 2
2. Avoiding discussing PHI
It's important to safeguard PHI as much as possible, but some practices are taking unnecessary precautions, says Michelle Caswell, senior director, legal and compliance, at healthcare risk-management consulting firm Clearwater Compliance, LLC.
"I think there's still a fear among small providers ... that they can't discuss protected health information anywhere in the [practice]," she says. "They feel that they have to almost build soundproof walls and put up bulletproof glass or soundproof glass to prevent any sort of disclosure of protected health information, and that's not what HIPAA requires at all. HIPAA allows for incidental disclosures, [which] are disclosures that happen [incidentally] around your job. So if you've got a nurse and a doctor talking, maybe at the nurses' station, and someone overhears that Mr. Smith has blood work today, that probably wouldn't be a violation because it's incidental to the job. Where else are the doctors and nurses going to talk?" As long as you are applying "reasonable and appropriate" safeguards, Caswell says you should be in the clear.

| HI-TECH FOOTWEAR IN THE NEWS | |
Engineers Have Designed High Heels That You Can Actually Walk in
An astronaut, an engineer, a wearable tech expert, and an orthopedist have teamed up to create a stiletto that they claim will stop us having to choose between comfort and fashion. By using new materials and innovative engineering, they've found a way to spread pressure more evenly around the foot and help prevent some of the damage caused by regular heel-wearing.
|
|
Engineer-designed high heel |
Their design includes a unique plastic shank that serves as the 'spine' of the shoe. Usually this shank is made from steel, but by using a strong but flexible and light plastic resin, it not only offers proper support, but also absorbs more of the force from the impact of walking. This means that when the wearer is standing still, the pressure is on their toes, but when they walk, the pressure is placed on their heel, more evenly dividing the load and reducing the impact of each step by up to 50 percent.

RE: The High Cost of Podiatric Education
From: Peter Vannucchi, DPM
I worry about the new students who are enrolling in our podiatry schools today. No longer is keeping up grades the most pressing challenge. Now, it is the costs of education. I had a union scholarship to pay for my undergraduate tuition. I worked later in heavy construction, the Department of Labor, and a host of other jobs (can factory, glass, rubber mills, and even steel mills). Nevertheless, by comparison to what today's student is expected to pay, my education was a bargain. When I received my diplomas and licenses, they did not come wrapped in the IOUs of crushing student loans.
Coupled with the challenge of finding employment upon graduation, we are in danger of making the cost an insurmountable barrier to pursuing a professional degree. We could be facing a crisis in attracting creative people to our profession. This is what is at risk if we place our schools beyond the reach of those who hold the key to our future; not only as a profession, but as a nation.
These are important issues that our APMA should be working on and form collateral partnerships with academia and "state boards." The phenomenal cost of our education, which burdens young people beyond graduation and far into their careers, is the bigger issue. It transcends any single discipline. It demands a quality of national leadership that recognizes the risk of failure to act. This is a cost that this profession and this nation cannot afford.
Peter Vannucchi, DPM, Dallas, TX
