Sheepskin Boots Could Cause Flat Feet: NZ Podiatrist
As winter kicks in for New Zealanders, podiatrists are warning about flat feet which can cause pain while walking and even standing. Prolonged wearing of the boots, originally designed as indoorwear, can cause damage to the foot arch because of lack of support from the boots, they warn. Bruce Baxter, of Foot Clinic Podiatry Med, said: "They're evil. It's not just the lack of stability; also in older people there is the risk of catching and tripping."

He said boot-style slippers compromise foot posture. In winter, people reach for the boots because the sheepskin made them seem warm. But he said a slipper's warmth depends on the thickness of the sole, not the lining of the upper.

Two Plead Guilty in Drug Case Involving PA Podiatrist
Two defendants involved in a local doctor’s alleged hydrocodone pill scheme pleaded guilty in Fayette County Court, while a third person failed to appear for his plea hearing. Scott Eugene Bloom, 43, of Hibbs, and Deven L. Saghy, 46, of Uniontown both entered general guilty pleas to drug and insurance fraud charges before President Judge John F. Wagner Jr. on Thursday.
Senior deputy Attorney General Dennis Kistler, of the attorney general’s Insurance Fraud Section, said the plea agreement calls for Bloom and Saghy to provide testimony against Dr. William Ainsley, 39, who faces 16 counts of insurance fraud and drug violations for allegedly writing prescriptions for large numbers of painkillers in exchange for patients returning half of them to him.

ICD-10 Compliance by Oct. 1 Possible, Even for Procrastinators
With a little more than 100 days until the ICD-10 implementation deadline goes into effect, the clock is ticking but the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services insists it’s not too late for providers and others to get ready for the code switchover—even if they’ve done nothing so far to prepare for the new code set.
Though it might seem like a daunting task, CMS officials say there are strategies and resources to successfully transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 that can be put to use just in the nick of time. “Certainly, there is still time to get ready,” said Denesecia Green, deputy director of the National Standards Group, during a June 18 Medicare Learning Network webinar. But, Green added, “it’s definitely time to transition now.”

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY | |
Common HIPAA Misconceptions - Part 1
While practices must work hard to comply with HIPAA, some are taking HIPAA compliance efforts a bit too far. That's according to risk management experts, who say there are some common compliance misconceptions that are costing practices unnecessary time and resources. Here's what they say many practices are avoiding that they don't necessarily need to avoid, and some extra steps they say practices are taking that they don't necessarily need to take.
1. Avoiding leaving phone messages
While it's true that a phone message from your practice to a patient could be overheard by the wrong party, phone messages that contain protected health information (PHI) don't need to be strictly off limits at your practice, says Jim Hook, director of consulting services at healthcare consulting firm The Fox Group, LLC. "Many offices adopt a blanket policy of, well, 'We can't leave you any phone messages because HIPAA says we can't,' and, that's really not true," he says. "You can always get consent from a patient on how they want to be communicated with."
Hook recommends asking all of your patients to sign a form indicating in what manner you are permitted to communicate with them, such as by mail, e-mail, text, and phone message. "If the patient says, 'Yes, you can call and leave me phone messages at this phone number I'm giving you,' then it's not a HIPAA violation to use that method of communication," he says.

From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM
I always read Dr. Hultman’s articles and letters. But of the hundreds he has written over the last 20 years, the article he wrote on “parity” between MDs and DOs (June/July issue, Podiatry Management Magazine) is his most important and incisive. Paraphrasing his main point, DPMs get “bogged down” in the nomenclature of the DPM degree letters, causing disagreement and in-fighting. Ultimately that has led us away from real parity.
Dr. Hultman believes the parity issue is really one of licensure and not degree letters. He firmly believes that parity is obtaining a plenary license for DPMs just as it is for...
Editor's note: Dr. Rosenblatt's extended-length letter can be read here.
