CT Podiatrist Discusses Bromhidrosis

Smelly feet are no laughing matter to West Hartford podiatrist Dr. Marc Lederman. “We see it in athletes. We see it from certain types of footwear that don’t breathe well. We see it from nylon stockings. Even socks that don’t wick properly will cause this,” say Lederman.

Dr. Marc Lederman

Lederman says that you can blame bromhidrosis on the three “S’s- sweat, socks, and shoes. When these team up, you’re probably going to get bacteria. However, stinky feet may be more serious. “Sometimes the cause can be a neurogenic problem where there is an involuntary nerve issue which actually causes hyperhydrosis.”

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS

NY's Parlimentarian Podiatrist Discusses Senate Mess in Albany

Schilansky is an expert in parliamentary procedure."That behavior would be unacceptable at any meeting I was chairing," said Dr. Mark Schilansky, while watching the June 8th video of the New York State Senate coup unfolding.

Dr. Mark Schilansky

The very procedure that went amuck in the Senate after a resolution to turn the tables on the Democratic majority. The first sign things went south, Schilansky says, is that the body didn't stand at ease after such a motion.

"That's a courtesy given to the chair," said Schilansky. "Stand at ease simply means, we're not in recess, the meeting's not over, don't leave the room. It will take us a few minutes to straighten this out."

MD Podiatry Group and Local School Collect Shoes for Charity

Many people would not consider a group of students with learning disabilities and podiatrists a typical duo. However, after joining forces for the Soles4Souls charity organization, the two found that shoes were not the only things that matched well when paired together.

The Chesapeake Foot and Ankle Center acts as one of many donation centers in the United States where shoes can be donated and then shipped to the Soles4Souls headquarters in Nashville and then later dispensed.

Dr. Ira Gottlieb ( 2nd from left back row) with students of Harbour School

Over the course of two months, The Harbour School collected 187 pairs of shoes to be added to The Chesapeake Foot and Ankle Center’s growing collection in their Pasadena office. Dr. Ira Gottlieb of The Chesapeake Foot and Ankle Center agrees that the total number of shoes collected was beyond his expectations. “It really proved to me what the human spirit can do when put towards a good cause. The energy and enthusiasm that their students brought to this project was a source of inspiration.”

RESEARCH NEWS

Podiatrists Included in BioMedix NIH-Sponsored Claudication Trial

Recognizing the importance of comparative effectiveness research in vascular medicine, and its impact on improving the health of patients with peripheral arterial disease (P.A.D.), BioMedix Vascular Solutions has elected to join forces with the CLEVER (Claudication: Exercise versus Endoluminal Revascularization) trial investigators to increase patient recruitment into this pivotal study. BioMedix is a diagnostic company that provides an integrated suite of hardware, software and online services designed to diagnose peripheral arterial disease (P.A.D.). Primary care physicians (PCPs) and podiatrists use the PADnet network to provide a diagnosis and recommendation for the PCP or podiatrist and their patients.

The CLEVER study is a multi-center clinical trial designed to determine prospectively the optimal treatment for individuals with proximal intermittent claudication due to the aortoiliac arterial insufficiency. It is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, through the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and is taking place in approximately 30 medical centers across the country. It is the only study of its kind to compare the benefits of supervised exercise, endovascular revascularization, as well as “optimal medical care” (the most common care, which includes claudication pharmacotherapy) in a multi-center prospective randomized trial design.

PRACTICE MANANGEMENT TIPS FROM AAPPM

Use Trust to Motivate Your Staff

Stephen Covey wrote in "The Seven Habits of Highly Motivated People" that trust is the highest form of human motivation. People respond when they know that you believe that they are the absolute best person for the job and that you trust them to get the job done right and on time. This trust doesn't preclude the fact that you need to train and inspect work until they rise to the level of that trust, but nothing will motivate people more than to simply know that you believe in them.

RE: Liquid Nitrogen for Verruca
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

I have been using a device called Cryoprobe which is a hand-held freezing device for the treatment of verrucae and other lesions. It is hand-held and the company supplies canisters of freezing agent. This is an impressive-looking, high-tech device. The penetration is greater than 1 mm in 5 seconds, with a maximum penetration of 5 mm. This is at a temperature of - 127 degrees F. and at 725 psi. The accuracy of the stream of freezing agent is so exact that it mimics the surgical accuracy of a scalpel.

I am impressed with this device and my patients and their family members are equally impressed. The company that markets this device displays it at most podiatry conventions where you can actually try it out on a model foot.

RE: Francine Schilardi-Deck, DPM
From: Russ Barone, DPM

In early May of this year, the class of 1979 from NYCPM had a 30 year reunion aboard a cruise ship. I was completely undecided whether I would go or not. But something from beyond made me go. When I got to New York Harbor, there were about 20 out of a class of 100 that made the trip. One of the classmates was Francine accompanied/ helped by her husband. I knew Francine from school but we did not run with the same groups in the class. However, one common bond was that we were both Italian-Catholic.

As you reach your mid 50's in life, a little more thought goes into mortality and immortality about one's life. I sat with some of my classmates and talked to Francine. But most of us just listened as she told us of her most difficult times. This included what she heard and saw while in a six-week coma. The most important message I received was that there is something waiting at the end. This was confirmed by the presence of Francine Schilardi-Deck. It was also the message from her that told me to attend the cruise, as if she pulled me right out of the sky. My thoughts and prayers are with her husband. "For better or for worse" - he took his vows seriously!

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: A "Difficult" Post-op Question?

I treated a patient for an infected ingrown toenail. The offending nail border was avulsed and the patient was placed on soaks and antibiotics. He was instructed to call the office in one week. As instructed, he called the office and asked to speak with me. I asked him if there was still pain. He said, "No". I then asked him if the toe was still swollen and red. His answer was, "I don't know". To which I said, "What do you mean you don't know? Just look at the toe and tell me." He then said, "Well I can't see Doc. I have a sock on."
