PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Zero-Budget Staff Motivators that Beat a Pay Raise
These cost-effective strategies can boost employee morale and retention in medical practices, addressing turnover without breaking the budget.
9. Crowdsource micro-wins every week
Keep a stack of Post-its at each workstation and invite anyone to jot a nagging inefficiency. Review three notes at the Friday huddle and green-light at least one. Employees who hear “Yes, let’s try it” stay longer than those who hear excuses.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR) |
RE: Option for Sunsetting of TrakNet
From: K.G. Gauntt, DPM
For those who may be looking into a new EHR platform, particularly with the sunsetting of Traknet coming up, one viable option to look into is Populate. I was one of the users of the above since its inception. I made the switch to Populate about a year ago when the program was relatively new and had many holes to fill; they are working diligently to do so. It is not podiatry-specific but podiatry commands the largest share of users.
Remember, we all have our own wish list for these programs and the perfect one does not exist. I looked into and demoed many and rejected most for a variety of reasons. I was looking for simplicity and integration foremost. Most of the platforms have most of the features, some are better at one thing than another, one area of weakness is another's strong point. You have to decide what fits you and remember they all make promises and demo the easy stuff.
Populate is becoming a better and better platform weekly. It is easy to transition to, easy to learn, and is rapidly adding AI based processes, not all of which I use as I simply do not need them at this time, but they are available.
Disclosure: I am not paid for this opinion.

RE: Medicare Part C Risk Adjustment Audits
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
Several recent announcements have made it clear that the Feds finally are making a concerted effort when it comes to Risk Adjustment Fraud. That is the Feds have announced that every single Medicare Plan C plan will be audited for Risk Adjustment Data Evaluation (RADV). Many healthcare law firms have announced webinars on what to expect with these investigations. While these are not audits of your practice, these investigations may nevertheless cause some increase in the number of requests for information from practices, where the investigators compare our charts and claims to the conclusions reached by the MCR Part C carrier.
While these may be burdensome, if they prove what many of us believe, that the MCR Part C plans are committing fraud, then that increased burden may just be worth it. If the plans are guilty, as most of us believe, then the punishment should be not only civil, but criminal charges need to be brought against the officials of the companies who perpetuate these crimes. The loss has been staggering to the Medicare Trust fund and the bleeding needs to stop now! Time will only tell whether the OIG and this task force are a paper tiger or the real deal.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
I am extremely happy that Dr. Gottlieb replied to my "Updating Podiatric Medical Education" letter. It is a prime example of the confusion surrounding residency programs and residents. Unless one is actively listening to what the recent graduates are saying, it's easy to misinterpret what we have in front of us. Although every resident is exposed to some surgery, not every resident leaves a program feeling comfortable with complicated tri-malleolar fractures or even bunionectomies. They simply do not want to be surgeons no matter what their credentials say. Hence, many young podiatrists are satisfied with certification in podiatric medicine rather than foot and ankle surgery.
If you keep your ear close to the ground, you might hear the talk about returning to different classifications for podiatric residency programs. I recently hired a resident from a very prestigious surgical program and equally impressive fellowship who was not comfortable performing surgery when he was the surgeon of record. He matched there but found out that's not what he wanted but had to complete the program or suffer dire consequences professionally and economically.
In conclusion, we must be knowledgeable about the wants and needs of our youngest members, so we know what they are really saying but don't have the experience to verbalize their thoughts so we understand what they mean to say. You are a senior member of the profession and know reaching out with an ad hominem attack is not a good example for our youth. We would be happy to hear your philosophical thoughts about the future of our profession and the young students and residents.
Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD, Columbus, OH

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A |
From: Michael S. Downey, DPM
I was very saddened to learn of the passing of one of my life-long mentors, Dr. E. Dalton McGlamry. I was first introduced to podiatry as a pre-med junior at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. When I expressed some doubts about entering the field of medicine, his daughter, Glynn, suggested spending the day observing her father in Atlanta. That visit in 1978 changed my life. I decided on the day of that visit to enter the field of podiatry and I have never regretted that choice.
Dr. McGlamry epitomizes the dedication, fortitude, compassion, grit, and care necessary to be a great podiatric physician and surgeon. After completing my 4 years of podiatric medical school training, I was fortunate to be selected for the Doctors Hospital residency program with Dr. McGlamry. I observed firsthand this giant in our profession not only as an outstanding surgeon, but as an individual committed to the betterment of everyone in our profession.
In my opinion, he was the originator of nationwide podiatric education accessible to all. He was a devoted family man, and a steadfast contributor to his local community. Dr. McGlamry not only strengthened my skills in treating the lower extremity, but was a role model on which I hopefully have honed my personal character. Although I have met and spent time with many of the outstanding leaders in our profession for which I am thankful, I will always consider Dr. McGlamry the GOAT podiatric physician and surgeon, and I will always be thankful for his guidance and mentorship. I know Dr. McGlamry’s passing is a great loss to many in our profession. I share my deepest condolences to all who shared in his light, including his family and many friends. RIP.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B |
From: Mark Feldman, DPM
And so now 54 years later, we gather together to honor and attempt to find some way to express our gratitude to our founder Dr. E Dalton McGlamry (EDM), his 2 partners and 10 colleagues ...names….who through his individual leadership and individual lifetime devotion to the education of podiatric surgeons has produced the 170 podiatric surgeons present here. Our podiatric Halstead, Thomas Hale Ham, Gray, Osler, Ilizarov, Koefoed, and so many others in whose company he belongs.
Because of EDM, we became chiefs of surgery at several of the 11 colleges. We opened podiatry slots in the Division of Research in Medical Education at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, for the M.S. in medical education, developed podiatric surgical residency opportunities in the Czech...
Editor's note: Dr. Feldman's extended-length letter can be read here. This letter was part of a Podiatry Institute tribute to Dr. McGlamry earlier this year.
